Assuming anyone here is living it up in Toronto, that is.
I've been getting grass-fed ground beef from the Whole Foods when they have it, which comes from Baretta Farms (the only nearby grass-fed farm according to eatwild.com). Anyone know of another local source? Any farmers markets with good quality meat? Just curious as to what the Toronto crowd does for their meat. While I'm at it, know of any local sources for good ghee?
All three are fantastic, and have varying amounts of grass-fed meat each week.
Stoddart Family Farms has a meat CSA that you might be able to sign-up for still. It comes out to $8.25/lb of grass-fed beef. I signed up for their 2011 Winter Share, which is for February to May.
Sanagan's has grass-fed beef sometimes. It's not a staple of theirs because it's hard to come by in Southern Ontario.
If you go to Sanagan's, which I highly recommend, tell Peter or Derek that Nick sent you. I've been going to them for about a year now. They're great guys, very friendly, and very knowledgeable.
There's a really nice lady at the sorauren farmer's market that sells frozen grass fed. I'm pretty sure by the way that it tastes that it's for real. She raises the cattle on her family farm somewhere in Durham region.
Cumbrae's has a few butcher shops around the city (one on Church and Wellesley) and they sell some fabulous game meats as well as more traditional meat selections. A little more expensive than the grocery store, but definitely worth it. You can get information on all the farms they source from and their meat is delicious. Hope this helps!
If suggest going a little outside the GTA to Dufferin county for example and get a county map of local food - good quality without the city organic price. Most counties in Ontario have them. Of course you'll probably have to buy a side of an animal, but that is much more economical anyways.
Twin Creeks farm is all pastured and the farmer comes to Downtown toronto twice a month in winter and is at Trinity Bellwoods Farmer's market in summer. They are great people. I also just found Brooker's Natural Meats who delivers and has pastured eggs and dairy (!) which is impossible to find in Toronto.
Beretta's also sells at the Dufferin Grove farmer's market (Thursdays, I believe). It's a great little market, there is sometimes a woman there who has wild boar and venison as well.
Seconding Healthy Butcher, even though it is spendy. Great source for bones, organs, and fats to render yourself or pre-rendered. Very knowledgeable people there who will answer any questions you have about sources, etc.
Other than that - I have the same question! Doesn't seem to be that easy to find grass-fed around here. Maybe some of us should band together and group buy!
