For a guy, boxers supposedly ventilate that region better than briefs, letting everything hang loose. Presumably for a woman (provided the body fat composition is about right) no bra support is needed? is it good for the human body to hold our bits up (male or female) in such unnatural ways??

I might edit the way I am asking this.

tight drawers push your scrotum close to your body and raise the temp so you have less "swimmers" and your fecundability shrinks. It also lowers your testosterone levels too. – The Quilt Mar 30 2011 at 0:28

Bra for girls is decidely unpaleo considering no bra existed then but there is a good reason for them now. And not what you think. Bras can stimulate a women's nipple enough to release oxytocin. Requires the "headlights" to "come on" for 3-5 minutes a day. This confers a fifty % reduction in breast CA risk. If the bra does not work nipple message should be done daily. Cheapest chemo therapy I know of. – The Quilt Mar 30 2011 at 1:01

So my girlfriend is walking around releasing Oxytocin at random guys throughout the day? UNACCEPTABLE! Off with the bra! Nipple massages nightly! – Futureboy Mar 30 2011 at 2:45

Dr. K, bras prevent my nipples from being stimulated. Without one I get painful chafing and 'headlights' all day. – animalcule Mar 30 2011 at 5:05

If you have more than a B cup and have had a baby, trust me, you NEED a bra. – Sarah Nov 1 2011 at 14:43

I prefer my "bits" to remain in as youthful of a state as possible, therefore support is utilized. Every little bit of insurance against gravity helps. Will it make a difference in the long run? I don't know but I am not about to change that habit. And there is no way I am going to work out as hard as I do without as much support as possible, that is not conducive to a good workout. If not wearing a bra is considered "natural", then in this instance my vote goes for the modern status quo.

child bearing has some influence I imagine, but good luck against gravity – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 21:55

gravity has been solved, just ask any plastic surgeon ;) – texasleah Mar 29 2011 at 21:57

Boxers > briefs. The scrotum has built in temperature control that works poorly in briefs and inhibits your testosterone factories.

I go with you there, although men look better in briefs, i wear boxers or nothing mainly.. – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 21:47

I need a bra. No matter where I get the rest of my body fat composition-wise, I will always need a bra. After having mono for 3 months years ago I got down to 105lbs, but still had DD's. Some women will always need a bra. I also believe it serves the woman better later in life if she wears a bra earlier in life. But this is all from a purely 'way you look' perspective.

While I am working out it is painful not to have a bra -but I whip that contraption off as soon as I get home!

As for underpants/panties I dont think that they are necessary if you are wearing the right clothing (fibre-wise). Commando sure does feel free!

I don't understand most of what you write, sorry, mono and DDs, mean nothing to me, sorry.. 105lbs is around 48 kilos, you sound like quite a small girl, your body composition must be good? I think especially for girls, 'stuff' mustn't move around in excercise – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 21:45

sorry - mono is mononucleosis (viral infection causeing lethargy, lack of appetite - can last for long periods of time). I just looked up a bra size converter and 36DDs are a 95F in spanish bra sizes. Yes - stuff shouldn't move a millimeter while working out - it just doesn't feel very good at all. – Thumper Mar 29 2011 at 21:52
it's a sensitive subject I appreciate, I am not a girl, I think holding everything in place whilst working out is a good idea – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 21:57

I have no scientific reason for it, but I have always preferred no underwear.

A bra is absolutely necessary for me if I want my boobs to be where they look the best to me.

i count bra as underwear? – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 21:49

I sure don't. It's an undergarment, but not underwear. Underwear = panties. – sherpamelissa Mar 29 2011 at 21:53

ok, my english is the UK version, pants are underwear for me too :S – oliverh Mar 29 2011 at 22:00

Have you seen older women in no-clothes tribes? well, I don't want to have my breast hanging till navel any time soon. It is painful to do any physical exercise without a proper protection. Good bra also helps the back and shoulders. I do take it off the moment I get back home, though.

In terms of underwear for women - we have pubic hair for a reason. It's for protection, same as the fat over pubic bone. No underwear (with pubic hair intact) make sense only with loose skirt kind of clothing, not tight, possibly irritating pinching pants. I don't even want to think about the health risks and discomfort of wearing no underwear (and I mean real, not a tiny little string), shaved pubes and tight pants.

in terms of male, there seems to be the same principle - protect from possible injuries, but without too much coverage that could rise the temperature.

I'm sure it is completely TMI, but I generally shave and go commando much of the time, while wearing pants that fit my shape. I've never had a yeast infection, so FWIW it's not really an issue. – sherpamelissa Mar 30 2011 at 1:57

Wearing trousers without underwear is gross. How would you like to go into a shop and try on and or buy trousers that someone else had tried on over their bare bottom and smelly fanny. Yuk. Gross. If going shopping for trousers please please please wear clean cotton panties. As for the rest of the time it's easier to wash a pair of panties every night than it is to wash yr trousers every night. And panties are cheaper than trousers to be buying all the time.

There is no scientific evidence that bras protect from sagging later in life. Not having 5 children definitely does though. Not wearing one has helped some of my back problems. When I do wear a bra I wear a lightweight bralet and not one of the underwire megabras I used to wear. Some women need them, most don't.

"some women need them" - I think it's about body composition, or fat % ? – oliverh Mar 30 2011 at 14:10
I dunno, I think it's more genetics. I've met women my height and waist measurements with very large breasts. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 30 2011 at 14:27
the female breast is mainly fat tissue with muscle underneath, so some girls get fat there and on the hips - i.e. curvacious, which is attractive to men to a certain point. In this page from MDA, there are lots of examples of hunter gatherer men looking fantastic, but no women: marksdailyapple.com/… I'd love to find some examples – oliverh Mar 30 2011 at 17:48

I haven't worn underwear in more than 15 years, probably. I'm 29. It always just seemed like a useless extra step, and a waste of space in drawers and laundry baskets.

Two caveats: I do wear boxer briefs at the gym, to keep "everything" from swangin' all over the place, if you catch my drift. Pants tend to wear out faster in the crotchular region. Must be something about "THAT kind of sweat" or something. Or maybe I just wear the same pair of jeans for a month straight without washing? Who knows.

I feel great. HIGH sex-drive (my girlfriend says I'm insatiable). I just never felt right in underwear, it chafes, smells, makes me sweaty, wastes my money, makes me feel all..."shoved in."

Hope that's helpful!

you mean you don't wear underwear AND don't wash your jeans for a month? o_0 – Yoannah_offca Mar 30 2011 at 0:38
it's not THAT bad! I still shower! My girlfriend only complains a little bit. Haha, I'm a "smell-sharer." Y'know, <sniff sniff> "AWWW! Whew...HERE, smell this!" <offending article held out for inspection> – Futureboy Mar 30 2011 at 2:03

I am in LOVE! You said 'crotchular region' and that sounds just like me! Hahahaha! Sorry for off topic but that was great! Now on topic, I've gone years no undies, shaved, not shaved, no problems. I prefer natural fibers and I think it keeps things aired out and infection free best. I had chronic UTI infections growing up so some experience there. I'm not opposed to putting some on but off really is a great way to go in general and more people should do it! – Stephanie R Mar 30 2011 at 5:14

I prefer to wear sports bras if I can, since they don't have the annoying wire that you can't seem to get away from any more - plus they provide support. I suppose I'm "lucky" that I"m relatively average-endowed though I wish I were larger :(

As for regular underwear - I enjoy walking around in just jammies on the weekends - flannel pajama pants are just too comfy!

I prefer the sports bra as well - nice support, and minimizing. I wish my 34Cs were smaller. – Canis Minor Nov 1 2011 at 14:14

Boxer briefs/ boxers.

On a side note, I'm really feelin the fact that paleo women go commando at a higher percentage than general population- at least according to my sample size:-)

I saw the same trend, LB. ;) – sherpamelissa Mar 30 2011 at 12:48
Count me in--I went this way when I hit 40. Now my Fruit of the Looms and Hanes Her Ways waste away in the dresser. – Wenchypoo Mar 30 2011 at 13:23
i salute you ladies. i hope this trend catches on almost as much as i hope the diet does... i'm lying... i hope it catches on even moreso... :) – luckybastard Mar 30 2011 at 14:09

When I wear tight jeans, nothing but tighty-whiteys will do. The other kind bunch up everywhere and can be really uncomfortable.

Boxer briefs/trunks here. If my "testosterone factory" is being impacted negatively by it I sure can't tell the difference.

I wear boxers, but my new jeans are quite tight. I wonder whether that may be a problem for my testosterone/fertility?

Haven't worn drawers for at least 30years. Don't see the point in them.

Day to day walking around, Boxer briefs FTW, cause there is nothing more uncomfortable than having your junk slip into a pants leg a you sit down and get pinched. Can you say nauseus vomitus?

In a kilt, Boxers or commando FTW.

Commando-ing it has its merits, but I can't risk it any more; I've split a couple pairs of pants in my day, and having underwear on can make it less embarassing (depending on the underwear of course).
