Alright folks, my sex life might become affected and I can't have that. I have given up deodorant with aluminum in it. I also don't wash with soap all that often. I have tried both Nature's Gate and Tom's of Maine deodorant sticks. I have also tried applying rubbing alcohol to my armpits too. Whether I wash with soap every day or not doesn't seem to change the fact that these deodorants don't work very well for me. My wife has told me she can only smell me when she is close. I want her close as much as possible so I need to find a solution before the weather gets real warm. Btw, I have been eating paleo for over 4 years and haven't noticed any foods that make a difference.

I don't understand...Do you smell bad? or do you smell musky and sexy? – MKS Jul 27 2011 at 20:01

I use magnesium oil right after the shower (supplement and deodorant in one, yipee), it seems to slow the stink, but doesn't remove it for me if it already there. If I'm stinky I put about 1 tsp. of witch hazel in my palm and do a quick rub down on each side, and then a wipe with a wet paper towel or wash cloth, and then reapply magnesium oil.

Arm and Hammer has an aluminum free deodorant. I'm sure it has other weird crap in it, but no aluminum. It has worked alright for me.

UARMSOL deodorant powder works even when you have to sweat ! I've used the deodorant for years now and have had no problems with it. This deodorant is so amazing. A sprinkle pinch of the powder is all you need after shower. The deodorant powder contains no chemicals, no oils, and no masking of anything. Uarmsol removes the worst smell you have. My armpit used to smell funky, almost like cockroach smell, now i am free from any odours. Even when i sweat i have no odours. I'm loving it and i would recommend for anybody who has any armpit odours. Also you don't have to shave your armpits or worry about after sport smell !

I haven't seen this mentioned, and it borders I suppose on TMI, but something else to consider, as I see you are male, is shaving or at least trimming. Any hair you have is holding bacteria (typically the source of the odor unless you're in ketosis which can mean strong BO, too), and that's a lot of surface area compared to bare skin. I know in the US, it's not fashionable for men to shave their underarms, but I think most women secretly (or not so secretly, if you recall a Carlos Mencia sketch about "What women want" - it was on YouTube last I knew) prefer a clean shaven man.

Anyway, I use the crystal deodorant. Someone mentions a Thai crystal, but it comes marketed under different names. It works best IMMEDIATELY after showering, and even better if you apply some rubbing alcohol first. Basically, it's a big crystal of a mineral salt, all natural, no fragrance. And anything you use will work better if you're trimmed or shaven, because it will make better contact with your skin. Not all modern inventions are bad, and not all leftover evolutionary traits (like body hair) are useful. We've only retained some of those traits because they don't cause significant harm, not necessarily because we need them for survival.

Lavilin is aluminum and alcohol free, hypoallergenic, etc. Find it on Amazon, or http://www.microbalanced.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

For me it works wonderfully, I use a small dab every 3-4 days depending on activity/sweat. It isn't cheap, but lasts a few months.

Old Spice. Their regular deodorant does not contain aluminum and works well. I have had no success with Tom's of Maine, Lavilin, and other aluminum free products purported to be deodorants!

Arm and Hammer Essentials is another effective product that does not contain aluminum, but it does contain triclosan which is very biologically active and so I do not recommend it.

I like baby powder. I don't see that answer around the boards, but it works for me.

Apple cider vinegar. You smell like vinegar for a short time and then the smell goes away.

I didn't really believe this would work, but I've been doing it for a week or so now and no stink-o. It's a cheap n=1. – anonymo-paleo Apr 3 2011 at 5:22

I never wear deodorant, but if I start to stink after a workout or something, I'll put a hair dryer on high and nuke all of the odor-producing bacteria from orbit. Dries everything out and sanitizes without any chemicals. I suppose you could then apply a scent of some sort, but I don't.

Really? I always blow dry myself after the shower. Definitely doesn't help the funk. I've been using baking soda / coconut oil in the shower. That helps a bit. – Todd Apr 1 2011 at 21:11

This may be unpopular in paleoprimalsphere but I tend to think this one isn't complicated: use commercial deodorant. Or antiperspirant if necessary.

I tend to side with the Kurt Harris' Paleo 2.0 paleo. Neolithic does not = bad. And in the scheme of things, a little deodorant or anti-perspirant is .00000000001 of what your body is exposed to in a day. What you take in nutritionally, movement and sleep are vastly important.

Having said that, body odor is sometimes indicative of a relative zinc deficiency. Increasing high zinc organ meats or adding oysters to your diet once or twice a week (depending on size, activity level, sex - men need more, and a few other factors) could go a long way toward balancing that.

I also find that 40% ZnO ointment, applied directly to the armpits about once a week totally eliminates any issue for me. Some may need more frequent applications and some may find it not helpful at all.

During the summer (which practically speaking is about 6 months in atlanta), I use actual antiperspirant as I have a personal preference clean, dry shirts:p

Best to you.

Dead Sea salt sticks work well for me and last for ever.

I had the same problem. Even after showering and scrubbing, there would still be an odor. I used the alcohol rub for about a month or so and made sure to rub on a bit of coconut oil as I rubbed it all over as a moisturizer, then a little fingertip dab of baking soda while the pits were still a bit damp and voila! I suffered heavy BO since...oh...junior high probably. That's 36 years! This is the cheapest and best solution ever!

I spray a magnesium solution (think magnesium oil diluted with water) into my pits after a shower. I think it works much like rubbing a salt crystal in terms of smacking down odors, and I believe that I'm picking up transdermal magnesium at the same time.

Win win!

I kept it simple and off-the-shelf, my local healthfood store had this in stock and I just pour this into a mister undiluted. http://www.swansonvitamins.com/CRR008/ItemDetail

The magnesium chloride and magnesium acetate mix is what appealed to me, i suspect that a mix of organic and inorganic magnesium salts helps make sure that I can absorb AMAP.

What do you make the solution with? If we do in fact absorb Mg transdermally, that would be awesome. :-) – W8liftinmom Apr 1 2011 at 19:10
@w8liftinmom: just added the details above. epsomsaltcouncil.org/articles/… and ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15689218 – Adam Crafter Apr 3 2011 at 18:49
awesome thanks! – W8liftinmom Apr 5 2011 at 16:20
yes we do absorb mag transdermally as long as the solution is made the right way. it's good stuff :) – sallycinnamon Jul 27 2011 at 23:35

I'll copy and paste this recipe from the last time I shared it:

  • 4 Tbsp baking soda
  • 2 Tbsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • [I added 1 Tbsp of an antibacterial pharmaceutical, which you would probably want to leave out and/or replace with extra oil or water.]
  • essential oil(s) of your choice, if you choose. I can't recall how much I used. Just keep adding drops until it smells nice.

Blend well and store in a jar or other airtight container. This made enough to last for months. If you ever find it's not spreadable, just wet your finger before you apply it. A little dab'll do ya.

This is what I use, though I don't add any essential oils. It works quite well. I pour mine into an old deodorant tube and store it in the fridge (so it doesn't melt out the bottom), though I'm going to have to stop that next batch because it bothers my husband. Burt's Bees spray deodorant also works very well for me. – jess6 Jul 27 2011 at 23:31

I know this sounds crazy, but I use Weleda Baby diaper cream. I had a similar problem with body odor, which went away immediately when I started using the diaper cream. A tube of it lasts me about 4 months, so the $12 price tag is worth it. After all, it's the zinc that kills the stink! :)

Here's a link to check it out: http://usa.weleda.com/our-products/shop/calendula-diaper-care.aspx

PS - I get mine at Whole Foods, so I'm sure it's readily available.

i use that on my kids butts and works great there! i dont know how i would feel about all that WHITE on my pits though. – being Apr 1 2011 at 20:34
(This is still me, I had to register to leave a comment) :) It actually takes very little cream to do the trick - a very thin, light coating works wonders, and it rubs in pretty well. Since you're not actually trying to prevent diaper rash, you don't need as much! :) – natalie Apr 1 2011 at 21:16
i am the original poster. i tried the walmart equate 40% zinc diaper cream. it works incredibly well.....thank you. – bubba29 Apr 12 2011 at 2:37
hey, this Avalon Organics is cheaper and has higher zinc content at 25% iherb.com/… – sallycinnamon Jul 27 2011 at 23:34

She should like how you smell! Regardless, I've noticed the same thing - its mostly because these deodorants don't prevent sweating, and sweating is what causes the odor.

What I do, if I notice I'm a bit more fragrant than usual, I'll run to the bathroom at the office quickly, wipe down with a paper towel and some water, and usually that will be good till the end of the day. (For example if I take a walk over lunch.)

Good luck.

she likes how i smell as long as i don't have BO ;). i figure if we lived 500 years ago, no one would notice a BO smell because that is what everyone smelled like. not today folks. it is what it is. – bubba29 Apr 1 2011 at 19:03
I really enjoy how my boyfriend smells, not in long periods if he's REALLY dirty like from yard work, but it does smell really good for a little while. – Oranges13 Apr 1 2011 at 19:12

Now you guys have me thinking about opening a shop on Etsy and mass producing Paleo-friendly deodorants :) – Oranges13 Apr 1 2011 at 19:19

the thai crystal!!! im in love! i have stinky underarms (and, strangely, my feet have never had any odor at all) and none of the "natural" deodorants have ever worked for me. someone got me the thai crystal and its amazing. also, cheap and lasts for two years. sometimes when im working hard at the gym, ill notice i get stinky again, but when the sweat dries, so does the smell. really cool. i got mine from vitacost. highly recommended.

I use a mixture of baking soda, coconut oil, and eucalyptus oil and it works great. I only get stinky if I sweat a lot and put off showering afterward for too long.

I use this mixture with lavender oil. It can actually hold me for almost 2 days, and I'm unusually sweaty and smelly for a woman. For me this works much better than any commercial brand I've tried – Karen Jul 27 2011 at 20:30

Have you tried an alum block?

no....does it work well? – bubba29 Apr 1 2011 at 18:46
they don't work for me. – W8liftinmom Apr 1 2011 at 19:18
I was surprised at how well they work. Some people claim they need to "detox" for a week or two before the alum block works, but for me, it worked right away. – WyldKard Apr 1 2011 at 21:07
