Has anyone read Zoe Harcombe's book the Obesity Epidemic? Based on this short interview it seems she is right in line with Taubes and many in the Paleo Community. the clip was interesting enough to prompt me to buy the book. Has anyone heard of Ms. Harcombe?

If she's the female Taubes, will there be a male "CarbSane" charlatan following her around like a jilted lover? – Travis Culp Apr 1 2011 at 20:06
I knew you were talking about her just by the title. I loved her interview with Jimmy Moore. Some very important points and good insights. I don't agree with the carb-centric view of obesity or the insulin hypothesis as it is normally presented, but she is a great writer and speaker. I'm not so sure about her war on vegetables. – Stabby Apr 1 2011 at 20:16
I saw an interview with her somewhere and tried to order her book on Amazon but it was out of stock. I'll have to look again. – WordVixen Apr 1 2011 at 22:47
Unfortunately I have heard of her. – Matt Apr 2 2011 at 0:28

does it have to be emphasized that she is a "female" version? How about just saying there is someone who seems to have similar ideas to TAubes?

she doesnt really align with Taubes, other than shes a strong low carb advocate... – Stephen-Aegis Apr 1 2011 at 23:13

then both descriptive words are wrong. can't stand the "female version of a successful male" crap. Like the chinese knock-offs of expensive toys. GRRR. – Yoannah_offca Apr 1 2011 at 23:42

It wasn't meant to insult or lessen her work. She just reminded me of Taubes and I just watched an interview with Taubes before I watched hers. No need to take it personally. – hemanvt Apr 2 2011 at 0:20

I did not read the question as being sexist in any way. Unfortunately the comments have now made it so. – DudleyP Apr 2 2011 at 18:01

yeah weird way to come at a question... hard to imagine anybody being described as the "male version of X" without it causing a snicker. – paleonyc Apr 14 2011 at 3:25

id be wary of Zoe Harcombe for 2 main reasons. She has little understanding of the metabolic processes, scientific principles or any nutritional insight on the matter. See her article in the Daily mail where she says insulin creates sugar. Secondly she cites The Bible as a scientific source for checking obesity records. Its on her website. Whatever she says from this point needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

She may be spinning or parroting if you will some correct claims but she is lacking in any scientific training or knowledge and for obvious reasons never mentions exercise, metabolism etc.

Gary taubes goes only with research and understands this. Zoe harcombe is a world away from this even if she advocates a lower carb diet.

I just watched the Fox piece she was featured in. I thought she was brilliant! Intelligent, coherent message and perfect execution. What's not to love? I would like to hear more from her and plan to check out her book.

The interview really is not that impressive. She is unlike taubes in terms of not covering any scientific basis, and just stating that meat is always more nutritious than vegetables/fruit is silly (how do you objectively evaluate the value of every nutrient in a food in and of itself? Especially without respect to the content of the overall diet.....or even what a fair metric for nutritious is).

She briefly mentions sugar and specifically fructose, but does not go into it further either. To many statements like that will put low carb back to its public appearance in the 1990s.

She advocates no sweeteners artificial or real, to help combat cravings, but she said if you are looking for a sweet taste on something, use FOS (Fructooligosaccharide) which I believe is a super huge Paleo no-no.
