Is it just me or do most food pictures on paleo/low carb blogs and sites look bad? Is it lighting? Just really unappetizing.

In my experience and based on what I've read about photographing food, two easy guidelines help a lot: use natural light instead of a flash, and shoot with a shallow depth of field (so the image is sharp in the front, and increasingly softer focus as it recedes).

The catch there is that the first requires that you photograph the food during the day, outside or near a window (unless you are more knowledgeable about bouncing the light from a flash, lightbox, etc.), and that you use a camera where you can control depth of field.

Like everyone here (and like you, I'm sure), I'm very appreciative of the efforts that paleo food bloggers go to in order to share ideas and recipes, and I've found them very useful. That said, I agree that flash photos taken in a point-and-shoot way don't often make the food look as appetizing as it does in person.

@Ziva, excellent answer! – Ed Apr 3 2011 at 0:24
YES - especially on the flash! Most plated paleo meals involve a fair amount of fat/grease, so a flash only serves to emphasize that. Ambient natural lighting is featured on all of the foodie blogs (and not just paleo ones - Pioneer Woman Cooks is a great example) whose recipe pictures look drool-worthy. – familygrokumentarian Apr 3 2011 at 2:36
Excellent suggestions. I bring this up because if the food looks bad it doesn't suggest to others that this lifestyle is enjoyable. – jeffk8900 Apr 3 2011 at 15:40

Jan, updated your link to actually be clickable. On a side note, I think the photo quality on your site is definitely above average – Stephen-Aegis Apr 3 2011 at 14:16
Your photos are good. Definitely not who I was talking about. – jeffk8900 Apr 3 2011 at 15:39

I think it's just you.

These guys aren't usually professional photographers.

I think the pictures in Sisson's book look great, by the way.

"the food lovers primal palate" has fantastic food pictures. mine suck because i take them with my cell phone for easier uploading to facebook. food photography isnt easy though, and you need a good camera. i dont think most bloggers have a ton of photography experience, generally speaking.

Yes, but I'm a writer, not a photographer. I even say on my site that everyone has to suffer through the retro-amateur look with me. Who has time to take a Food Photography weekend workshop and who has the money to invest thousands of dollars in new camera and lighting equipment? It's a lot to ask of a humble blogger. Not to mention, the food's getting cold while you're trying to get the perfect shot, and I wanna eat! I think there's a certain aesthetic developing in the food blog world, and everything is beginning to look the same out there. BOR-ING!

I post food pics to Facebook, but often not nearly enough or great shots, because of this same reason, prepping the perfect plate takes time and I'm hungry! – Stephen-Aegis Apr 3 2011 at 14:17

That has not been my experience. I love looking at all of them and am grateful for all the hard work, time and energy so many put into their sites.

If they did, then it surely can't be to do with the paleo-properties of the food. There's nothing about a meal not containing grains/vegetable oil/dairy/sugar that would make it look less appealing.
