Hi - I realize that there have been some similar threads on this for other cities, and that there is a "paleo physicians directory," but none of the above (that I was able to find, anyway) have turned up a physician in San Diego area.

So I thought I'd ask if any San Diego paleos have a general-practitioner-type physician they recommend. It seems like it may be too much to ask for a "paleo doctor"; I would settle for someone who:

  • is competent

  • won't openly mock me for believing that saturated fat is good for you and other paleo nutritional tenets (or at the very minimum, doesn't unquestioningly accept the conventional wisdom on nutrition)

  • is sympathetic to the preventative approach favored by us paleo types, as opposed to the more typical "address the symptoms after the fact, preferably using pharmaceuticals" approach

  • (edited to add:) is science-based and not "woo-woo" (I am open to alternative modalities etc., but only if they are based in real science and empirical evidence)

Bonus points for being anywhere near Encinitas!

I would prefer an MD for one-stop-shopping and insurance reasons, but that said I'd be interested if someone's had good experiences with other types of specialists (e.g. the thing Chris Kresser does).

Thanks very much!

Friends of mine just opened a clinic in Encinitis. Marie Shieh md and Barry Disch ap Amusing couple. She's 100% Chinese-American Western MD , He's 100% red headed Irish - American accupunturist. Go figure. No issues with high fat diets, very very skeptical of "Lipitor Nation". Real cool. They even barter! WTF! I am so pissed I'm 3000 miles away from them! How about one in the flower capital of the world..Encinitas? Jimmy Moore has a list of low carb docs. http://lowcarbdoctors.blogspot.com/ by state and city.

Thank you Dexter! I did spot that list in my research, but took a pass on the Encinitas guy because his site talks about homeopathy, which is too uncomfortably non-sciency for me. In my initial post I forgot to mention that I am trying to find someone who is very focused on science as opposed to approaches which have kind of sketchy evidential support. I've edited the initial post to specify this. – Pierce Inverarity Apr 5 2011 at 1:07

Thanks Jack... yeah, I looked there but only found chiropractors in San Diego though. – Pierce Inverarity Apr 20 2011 at 1:03

Pierce, I've been looking for quite some time. No luck so far. The only two mentioned on the above links are basically accupuncturists or chiropractors, which is fine, but I understand you are looking more for an actual physician, as am I.

Hopefully someone else can offer some good info. I will say, that for a like minded dentist in the area, Dr Marvin in Encinitas (Here) is pretty legit. (No affiliation, just happy with the service and approach)

Best of luck, and if you find one, please share! :)
