I made sweet potato fries last night. I fry them in grass-fed tallow, and they are very, very good. We have them maybe once a month, if that. Other than that, we eat sweet potatoes maybe once a week and that, besides the occasional winter squash in winter months, is about the extent of our starches.

This morning I logged into Twitter and found this directed at me:

some #paleo "people" like @JanSushiBar be going crazy eating all sorts of #yams and #sweetpotatofries. #notreallypaleosister

I'm tempted to just ignore it, but I'm also tempted to respond with "SOME #paleo "people" like @(name redacted) are self-righteous little snots #zealots #assholes

How do you deal with stuff like this?

How are yams and sweet potatoes not paleo? Cave Peeps been eating starchy tubers long time. My god, those sound delish, and I want some now! – Dave S. Apr 6 2011 at 15:34

Sheesh, I love how they put quotes around "people," like, allegedly you're a person. I have a thing about "unecessary quotations!" Anyhoo, I'd like to say I'd just ignore, but I'm not that classy! – Jules K Apr 6 2011 at 15:59

It's paleo but not good for many eating a paleo diet. Context! – The Quilt Apr 6 2011 at 16:10
True, being diabetic I wouldn't. But fine for the non-metabolically damaged. – Dave S. Apr 6 2011 at 16:45

Thank you all! I've never even heard of this person - this came out of left field and took me by surprise. Especially after being involved here for awhile, where the general consensus is there's no one "right" way to eat paleo. You'll also have to forgive me - I'm an old fart and relatively new to Twitter; it didn't occur to me that it would be relatively easy to find the troll (although I suppose if I'd thought about it, it would). Ah well. Thank you all again. – JansSushiBar Apr 6 2011 at 17:20

Paleo isn't a religion where you go to hell if you don't follow the non-existent rules >.< Even if sweet potatoes and yams weren't paleo (as if there's a clear definition for that) - you're an adult who gets to eat what you want.

I wouldn't respond - childish behavior shouldn't be acknowledged.

Do you really care what this person thinks?

I wouldn't.

Sweet potatoes are fine for people who like them and can eat them without interfering with their goals.

Check one of her previous tweets, though - she's eating french green beans and tomatillo salsa. Pot <-> kettle etc.

Don't respond with anger, but with humor. Something along the lines of "Some #paleo people like @(name-redacted) be going crazy using computers and tweeting, prolly wearing clothes even! #notreallypaleo"

Or just say you're Paleo 2.0, link to Dr. Harris, and tell her she needs to upgrade!

we evolved eating tubers.

We also evolved sticking sharp spears into members of warring tribes...

One of these is modernly acceptable, I'll let you choose which. ;)

It's the pointy stick thing that's acceptable, amiright? – Casey Apr 6 2011 at 16:21

True Joshua, none of them were available in their current form. But a lot of the foods our ancestors ate is no longer available to us. – Chickenosaurus Rex Apr 6 2011 at 17:42

Spears are sadly outmoded, we seem to have switched to the middle-finger as a poking device. Ah well. 8^) – Adam Crafter Apr 6 2011 at 17:53

@Joshua: virtually nothing that was available is available in identical forms. However, we understand the metabolic processes that we evolved to work with and look for moderns foods that most closely replicate that metabolic process... thats the best we can do. Tubers are a real whole food that fit that bill. – Stephen-Aegis Apr 6 2011 at 18:09

Ignore them.

People who are so sure that their view of what they think is correct that they make with mockery DESERVE to be ignored.

I see nothing wrong with what you made, and I make chips like that sometimes.

May I recommend dipping them in homemade spicy mayo? (the fries, not the zealots)

Update: Added recipe link in comments below!

+1 for dipping the zealots in a homemade spicy mayo. – Casey Apr 6 2011 at 16:19

Home made mayo is easy - lightly whisk one egg yolk & tbsp of lemon juice or vinegar. (You'll need a hand blender) - slowly, about 1tbsp at a time, blend in about 1 cup of oil. Olive oil is very strong, so choose a blend of something or macadamia oil I have heard is good too. Voila mayo. – Oranges13 Apr 6 2011 at 18:58
I made something like this Cajun remoulade : cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1915,149170-252203,00.html but added more cajun-kicking spices. Use whichever oils you think are appropriate, but a 1/2 and half mix of baconfat and olive oil works for me since I'm never heating the olive oil. – Adam Crafter Apr 7 2011 at 12:51

Ignore the trolls and focus on what's right for you and yours. I eat tubers and I think they're something humans have been eating for a long time. Self-righteous paleo zealots with severe myopia are to be ignored. If people were particles, they would be the the anti-vegan zealots. However, neither one has a positive spin, so the physics needs to be worked out. ;-)

Don't stoop to their level, Stand tall and enjoy your life. Paleo should NOT be a strict Dogma by a way of adaptable life.

I don't see how that's not paleo, but we all have varying opinions on that.

Doesn't sound like it's worth the effort of a response. Most likely anything you say will turn out looking just as silly as the original comment.

Don't respond to the comment, just correct her grammar and hashtag it #thatisall. it will leave her just as or more flustered than she's left you. :)

+1 for the #thatisall tag idea. oooh! I learned something! – Adam Crafter Apr 7 2011 at 12:57

Kat fight! :) Seriously though, either this dude(ette) has some personal animus against you or has some serious dogma issues. If people latch on to the Paleo diet (not Paleo diets fault, some weak people will latch onto anything as a form of religon) then they feel compelled to chastise such "sinners". You know what they say about purtianism...it's the suspicion that somebody somewhere is having a good time (or eating starchy tubers :). My advice would be to let it go.

The good thing is you got into their head (it bothered them). My Aunt gave me that advice when I felt bad when I was being talked about in high school.

So, anyway, I would ignore this comment/and the twitter-er, since anything else feeds the fire. Yesterday, I blocked someone on twitter for telling me about the HCG diet when I was talking about sister needing to lose weight. trolling/spam! when you look at their profile. Dang, and they got into my head for that second.

I've found similar sentiment around the net because I still eat dairy (technically Primal) but they yell at me because "that's not paleo." Just ignore them.

Since you say you never even heard of this person, I would respond, "@(name), and you are...?"

But that's just me. I'm a sarcastic SOB.

Here's how important Twitter thinks she is: "No Tweet results for @eelplace."

There's your answer.

Sorry, Tony, I just checked her profile and it's "protected". That's probably why it's not pulling up results. – WordVixen Apr 6 2011 at 17:09

From her Yelp reviews "the greek yogurt with chocolate & pomegranate is so MEH. i've had way better fro yo at berry chill (which sadly closed down). it's actually less than meh. as for the toppings, there are chestnuts. which make no sense. they are kind of chewy and gummy. the pomegranate is a syrup and the chocolate is flavorless and in the form of shavings. " Yeah, sounds like she is totally strict :) – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Apr 6 2011 at 18:40

this isn't the popular way to go about things it seems but I would definitely reply and call them out on having no idea what they are tlking about.

It seems to me this person isnt Paleo themselves, maybe they have had a bad experience with a headstrong, "preachy" type and are now just being a jerk to anyone who is Paleo...I say ignore.
