I've heard some people say they don't like this particular brand. Why? I tried it and found it to be fine. If you are one of these people, what brand do you get? I've heard good things about nutiva, but I'm not thrilled about the plastic container.

they don't...lol, just cooked with it... – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Apr 7 2011 at 1:23
I guess I've heard that over at MDA, but I was really just curious as it seems quite good to me. – mari Apr 7 2011 at 1:24
tastes great to me! – themobiustrip Apr 7 2011 at 1:42

FWIW I "liked" Nutiva on Facebook, but found they're implicitly promoting veganism all the time (always/only promoting vegan or vegetarian recipes, for example). I just "unliked" them the other day! But I still use their product. Even for cooking I like unrefined coconut oil.

Theirs is like candy I have to keep myself from eating it out of the jar. – Oranges13 Apr 7 2011 at 12:28
Oranges13: I feel that way about most coconut oil, but the TT Gold label is always in danger of getting snacked on. – Adam Crafter Apr 7 2011 at 12:35

Some people (both me and my husband) find that Spectrum has a kind of metallic flavor. I've seen on numerous Real Food sites that others have the same issue with Spectrum. However, my parents recently bought me a huge tube of Wilderness Family Naturals refined coconut oil, and that has a very slight metallic tang to it too, so it may have something to do with the refining process and not the specific brand. Some people don't notice any flavor to it, so I'd recommend buying a small jar first, and if you like it, then get a big tub.

I mainly use virgin coconut oil because I like the flavor and health benefits, but I keep refined for my deep fryer and for moisturizer (seems to work better than virgin as a moisturizer).

FWIW, a scoop of virgin in a pot of refined seems to negate the nasty flavor.

I wonder if it's the coconut flavor itself that is slightly metallic? But this is what I was looking for, thanks. – mari Apr 7 2011 at 10:39
You're welcome. They may just have a lousy source for coconuts, but I've never tried a virgin coconut oil that had a bad flavor. – WordVixen Apr 7 2011 at 17:39

spectrum is sold in whole foods which sports a vegan agenda.....hence the venom. Wasteful energy to me. I am glad for vegans......they make more animals available for me.

well... I go to whole foods. Much better produce selection and for the time being I'm getting my grassfed beef there. – mari Apr 7 2011 at 10:41

you get your gf beef at WF? ouch. i walk right past it unless they have a sale on it. it seems too expensive to me. i'm considering ordering from slanker's. maybe getting the family value pack or even 1/4 cow. also, tropical traditions has steak packages, but i've never ordered from there and have always wondered if it's good. – Jack Kronk Apr 7 2011 at 13:52
It is expensive. My dad doesn't want to pay the money for a freezer though. What the heck. We did the same thing for mineral water. I'd buy mineral water until we got a water filter. I think he's coming around though. – mari Apr 7 2011 at 17:24

i don't like spectrum because they do not seem to give a flip about what they market. if a company sells coconut oil and promotes it as an excellent cooking oil, then they must believe that saturated fat is not unhealthy for you. so why then, are they also one of the largest brands of omega6 laden oils in the world? they sell TONS of seed oils. soybean, corn, safflower, canola... the whole gamut. as far as i'm concerned, they are part of the problem.

look at their oils page... http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=6

somethin ain't right with that.

Yea I would rather go with a company that specializes in tropical oils. Everyone likes tropical traditions for instance, the masters! – justanotherhunt Apr 7 2011 at 5:50
yes. jungle products makes good tropical oils too. junglepi.com/products/index.html . and i think nutiva tastes as good as any coconut oil and is the most available all over the net for really good deals. – Jack Kronk Apr 7 2011 at 13:47

I'm sure it is a matter of personal taste, but I found the Spectrum fine to cook with but too "soapy" to eat plain. The only one I like to eat plain is Garden of Life.

I use the Organic Refined Spectrum to cook with and love it, so does my picky son! I also keep a jar at my parents' house & at work for cooking. It can be used for medium high heat & doesn't have any flavor or scent so it doesn't affect what I'm cooking (I personally don't want any coconut flavor in my food unless I intend it). I don't eat it plain. I purchase it at Wegman's. – Eileen Apr 7 2011 at 2:11
I find most of them too soap, too. I've had good experiences with Dr. Bronner's coconut oil, which is funny, since it's a soap company. – Sara S. Jan 18 2012 at 2:25

I use it but I like that everyone's oil tastes a little different. I do buy from Whole foods and get what's on sale most of the time. I do like Artisanna a lot, especially their coconut BUTTER.

I live on Artisana's butter. – SatFat Aug 4 at 22:31

From what I've seen in the stores....if memory serves....Spectrum is not Extra Virgin, and that's why I don't use it.

But is there any difference between extra virgin and virgin? I know there is for olive oil, but I didn't think so for coconut. – mari Apr 7 2011 at 10:38
mari- There's no official standard for virgin vs extra virgin, so you have to check with each manufacturer to find out what their definition is. – WordVixen Apr 7 2011 at 18:00
