Has anyone been reading/watching what Monsanto is trying to do with our food supply? They already have patents on most of the world's soy supply. Most seeds used today also have patents on them? Is there really any food that we eat today that isn't GMO? Now they're trying to get a patent on pigs! What next? A patent on humans? WTF?! What can we do about this?

What can we do about it? Eat paleo and support local farmers for pastured meat, organic vegetables and fruit and cut down on buying food that comes from large agro-companies.....

The paleo diet automatically cuts out most things like grains, sugar and dairy which are all based on produce that can and has been patented, what is left is meat, fat, nuts, fruit and veg - all foodstuffs that can be found (hopefully) growing and being raised locally and hopefully no one has yet patented. Aren't we the lucky ones!

One of the reasons I drank raw milk for years was because it had to come straight from the cow, there could be no multinational corporation controlling its production, no thousand miles across continents for it to travel and minimal processing (like GMOs - which are already in our food chain; we cannot completely escape its effects). I had to go to the dairy with a glass bottle and have it filled directly from a milking cow. So, it was a kind of protest and a move back to grass-roots campaigning on a very small scale by me - but considering now there are over 1500 raw milk vending machines on the streets of Italy alone, this kind of small-scale action can have a massive cumulative effect over time.

I like to eat for my health but I also try to eat for the 'safe-keeping' of local, backyard small-scale farmers who struggle under enormous pressure from the likes of Monsanto and supermarket giants. I like to buy meat from farmers who care about their livestock and can tell me personally how they were raised, something we can never know for sure about any of the 'faceless' food we eat nowadays, no matter what is written on the packet to entice/dupe us into buying it.

Many people think this kind of local, grass-roots buying is 'idyllic', 'impossible', 'too expensive', 'not relevant for paleos' or 'not important enough to consider'. Well consider this: It is our absolute right as human beings to be able to have a choice about what we put in our mouths. If small-scale producers vanish to the likes of Monsanto, we will no longer have that choice and that really is scary.

The consumer has power, especially when they are (local) paleo consumers......

I'll get off my soap box now....phew.....

I only hope that there are enough of "us" to keep local small farmers in business. Thank you for your reply – W8liftinmom Apr 8 2010 at 19:26
there are enough of us, it just depends on how well-informed we are and how motivated we are to make the right choice. – Louisa Apr 8 2010 at 19:31

Heck, Monsanto can have all the soy. That stuff's not fit for man or beast anyway!

I spent some time trying to find a salad dressing for 'on the road' and every single one of them had soy oil as a main ingredient- whatever happened to olive oil? Guess I will make my own. – henny Apr 9 2010 at 3:32

Yes, The Future of Food, and The World According to Monsanto are eye opening movies. Now pigs are next, huh? They won't be stopped because they enjoy the favor of protection from govt.

Another good/scary food movie is King Corn. That's a fun one to rent or borrow from the library. – AllTooHuman Apr 9 2010 at 18:55
Don't forget Food, Inc. as well! – Ri May 8 2010 at 8:29

Use the gov't and elect new officals instead of whine about it. Monsanto and cargill and the whole bunch of them can be stopped, we need to take action and NOT SOUND LIKE LUNATICS in the process.

who's whining or sounding like lunatics? – W8liftinmom Apr 8 2010 at 22:32
Nobody yet- nor do I see anyone taking action but in the end the lunatic fringe is always the loudest and garnishes the most headlines. We need to educate and not look like weirdos. – pjnoir Apr 9 2010 at 2:42

Has anyone heard about "non-sentient" meat. In a wired article about the future of food, they link to a couple of companies who are trying to create lab grown meat, so no animals will suffer. Now that's crazy! It will put farmers out of work if they succeed because companies like McDonalds could then create their perfect version and sell their big macs for a buck. I imagine it will also be sterile, with fewer of the flavor, fat and texture profiles of real meat.
