Maybe I missed it. Why did Dr. Harris erase referrences to PaNu on his website and replace it with Archevore?

Not sure, but my Webroot is blocking the new site as "suspicious." – Annie Apr 8 2011 at 23:08

It's marking it as suspicious because of the automatic redirect from the old site name to the new one... Auto redirects like that are kind of rare, and a bit suspicious to security software... I'm sure it's nothing to worry about in this case. – Adam Crafter Apr 9 2011 at 2:06

For the same reason he created paleo 2.0 I believe. He didn't like the paleo name because of the way it has been portrayed by the media (cavemen) and the lean meats and lipophobia associated with it (mostly from cordain). He then created a jazzy new name and decided to switch completely!

Maybe he'll chime in here though if he has anything to add.

Don't think his issue is strictly with the media part of the paleosphere. Today at work I explained that I've mostly switched to being paleo+dairy and someone nearby asked if I was one of those kooks who thought coconut oil could cure cancer (and whether I had checked out this paleo fish oil calculator that recommended 30+ capsules a day...) Two for two bits of idiocy in 30 seconds. – xyz Apr 9 2011 at 2:13

http://www.archevore.com/archevore/

As he learns, he is refining how he thinks and communicates his concepts.

He's making the label, he can call it what he likes.

I suspect that he would prefer not to be lumped in with some of the other Paleo* voices, and is doing a bit of differentiation.

archevore sounds like someone who eats books.

love your line not crazy about the new name but I am a dumb sucker and didn't get the refrence. Paleo works for me, not the caveman though. – pjnoir Apr 8 2011 at 23:39

In a way, KGH eats books cuz he reads a LOT! Maybe that's why he's so down to earth... – Flavio M. Apr 9 2011 at 9:07
or eats arches... – Mark Apr 9 2011 at 16:18

This is presumably for the same reason that he coined PaleoNu, to differentiate himself from those awful paleo people (who I've never encountered) who think we ought to dress like cavemen and hate science because grok didn't do biochemistry and so on) and the reason that he coined Paleo 2.0, to differentiate himself from the same, before declaring himself an 'archevore'.

Also, for what it's worth, I would have assumed that "arche" was alluding to the ancient or original diet, rather than the "essential," but never mind. Seemingly, from his manifesto, he wants to include some "archaic" (but merely a couple of hundred year old) diets rather than merely paleo ones. If so, then it's clear why he'd want to ditch the reference to the paleolithic, but for my own part, I wouldn't place too much theoretical weight on the 'archaic' or 'traditional' in this sense, since the results (that x is tolerated... when you're conducting heavy labour all day, living near the equator etc) are far more ambiguous a guide as to what's optimal.

These name change issues do seem to be less about the diet or the science than the descriptor "paleo." Ugh. There is that word "paleo" again...it's so last week...;) – Mark Apr 9 2011 at 16:06
"[L]iving near the equal etc ..." Did you intend "living near the equator"? Also I'm not quite sure I understand the last three lines or so. What do you mean by "the results"? Do you mean that if you were to put weight on the archaic/traditional sense of "arche-" then you would get lots of different archevore diets, from different time periods? But then why the example about heavy labor? – Paul Apr 10 2011 at 6:48
Ha, yes, thanks Paul, I meant 'equator.' I meant that the results (or, what we can discern) from looking at local groups at particular points in history and noting that they tolerate eating predominantly sweet potato or traditional-recipe bread or smoking like chimneys are of limited worth. We can infer a reasonable amount from the broad factors that were common to humans for the vast majority of our evolutionary history- which we could not but have adapted to- far less so, based on the health of isolated particular instances, where there may be a great many mitigating factors. – David Moss Apr 10 2011 at 13:29
OK, thanks again David. It seems I understood you correctly, was just thrown off by the heavy labor item, wasn't sure if it was a reference to something that I was missing which was then preventing understanding. ... Another possibility: Dr. H is explicitly stating that "arche-" should be understood as "essential" and then leaving it up to connotation to get the "archaic" across. – Paul Apr 10 2011 at 18:03

I am very interested in the essentials, in all aspects of my life. I only dine at archerestaurants, I only purchase archeclothes, and I only spend time with archefriends. (Just teasing, Dr. H! For the record, I am a fan of the new name.) – Paul Apr 10 2011 at 22:14

I liked the name PaNu ... (shrugs) It's his blog though, to each his own.

Possibly there is more than just the cavemen, lipophobia etc often associated with paleo that he meant to get away from. Perhaps it is not just giving a name, specific to the central NAD avoidance theme. Perhaps there is also a subtle shift in the approach, --at least if his words can be taken on face value, which is normally what he aims for and indeed successfully achieves. Notice this:

earlier: "The PāNu approach to nutrition is grounded on clinical medicine and basic sciences disciplined by knowledge of evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology. "

archevore version: "My conception of the EM2 is not derived from a single science or field of inquiry, but draws first on medical sciences like biochemistry and endocrinology, and only then looks back with history and paleoanthropology."

Do you notice an interesting difference?

If not, consider what I wrote to him in connection with the former (PaNu) statement a few days before he changed to archevore (The message appeared to be displayed for a few hours, then it disappeared then still later all comments in the thread were deleted.):

"...Do you mean this or is it just an uncharacteristically careless sentence? I would have thought evolutionary biology may suggest ideas to be 'disciplined' by basic sciences, but do you really think basic science can be disciplined by something as soft as evol. biol. with its great potential for just so stories? ..."

Actually he clearly means something like Archetarian. Surely I cannot be the only person sensitive to the distinction between genetic predisposition and human free choice?

Archevore is certainly a better label than Paleo 2.0. But it was kind of odd that he made the switch without even a word about why, especially after the long post on Paleo 2.0.

Not sure about the why but the what he does explain on his website> I've taken the greek word Arche, which refers to the underlying or essential, and combined it with the latin -vore to create a word that means "one who eats of the essentials".

Anyone else having problems to access PaNu/Archevore? Since yesterday whenever I try to open it, the blog pops up for a second and then the screen turns white. Could it be a problem with my browser? HELP! ;)

Ok, it works with IE but doesn't work with Firefox (my standard browser). What can I do to make it work again with Firefox? Sorry, I'm a caveman when it comes to computers ;) – ChenZhen Apr 10 2011 at 8:41
It also works with Google Chrome. I can't get it running on Firefox either. – Robin Apr 11 2011 at 19:16
Just upgraded to firefox 4.0 and now it seems to work again :) – ChenZhen Apr 11 2011 at 19:40

I can't get PaNu/Archevore to come up with Firefox or Safari. I don't have IE access. Please post if you figure out how to make it work! Hopefully someone can alert Dr. Harris to this problem. Thanks!

I still have the problem... :( Today it worked once when I entered Archevore via my own blog but after that it I couldn't open it anymore. I tried to change some firefox settings but nothing worked. Hopefully someone with better internet-fu can help us ;) – ChenZhen Apr 11 2011 at 15:42
