I think we are probably a lot more sqeemish about what we eat compared to our distant ancestors :)
As well as eyeballs are there any similar strange foods that you have had the opportunity to taste? What were they like to eat?
Things like this are why I'm glad I'm alive in this day and age. I don't HAVE to eat the funky stuff. Squeamish? Maybe, but day by day in every way, I'm glad I can eat steaks and not have to eat eyeballs and internals...
Andrew Zimmern hasn't got anything on me.I've made it through (and enjoyed) foods he couldn't stomach. Durian fruit is delicious,it tastes like fruity ice cream.Thousand year old eggs I didn't dig so much.Right now I'm experimenting with hog stomach,lotus roots, and jellyfish(not in the same dish).Eyeballs..meh.I'd try it,but heard it tastes exactly like it what it looks like it tastes like.However,the great thing about random animal bits you aren't sure of:You can always make yummy sausage :)
I'm not that squeamish of an eater. My friends run an amazing nose-to-tail restaurant here in Atlanta, Holeman & Finch Public House. I tried a lamb eyeball once.
Not going to lie--it was nasty. But I have a bit of a problem with anything you have to chew on a bit. Fish eyeballs are a little less weird, but still not really my thing.
But, to answer the initial question, yeah, sure I'd try it. I'll pretty much try anything.
one of the most awesome things I ever had was white fungus and lotus seed soup at a Chinese restaurant in Dubai. It looked very odd and other worldly, and gelatinous. but it was tasty. if the opportunity arose I would, but I doubt I would make a regular habit of it.
I've had all sort of eyeballs. They're nothing special, it's sort of like popping a pimple in your mouth, not the best eating experience ever - they don't really have much flavour... And then there is this chalky bit in the middle that's really bitter and sets the whole thing off. But basically... You know the cartilage bits on the end of chicken drumsticks? Basically the same thing minus the occular goop.
