It's true, Paleo friends, I drank too much wine last night. I've stopped taking Tylenol because of concerns about liver damage, and I'm trying to stick with LC Paleo for weight-loss, so I'm interested to know if any of you have hangover cures (yes, I'm drinking water) or awesome hangover snacks? I'm craving pizza something fierce. And cheeseburgers. And chocolate croissants.

I totally had a wine, cheese, and dark chocolate binge last night too. Hangovers are no fun! – Eli Ali Apr 26 2012 at 13:50

Unfortunately, as a musician I am WELL qualified to answer hangover questions!

Short ribs braised in red wine! With a gravy high in gelatin! Unfortunately, that takes about 4-5 hours to put together, so hopefully you have some leftover...

Failing that:

  • Bacon and eggs!

  • Ginger tea.

  • HOT HOT soak in the tub with Epsom salt, then a brisk cold shower.

  • 10,000 B.C. (the remake) or an equally horrible "caveman" movie to laugh at.

  • Sweaty exercise.

  • In the extreme case (too many Patron shots?) that none of the above works...Sleep it off and chalk the day up to a loss.

Feel better!

Oh man that movie was truly atrocious. :) – familygrokumentarian Apr 12 2011 at 18:45
haha yeah...SO bad. I really like post-apocalyptic movies on hungover days too! – Futureboy Apr 12 2011 at 19:10

if you know you're gonna get shwasted, i highly recommend a preemptive B-spectrum vitamin. i also stick to the rule of one glass of water for every glass of alchohol. when i stumble home, i chug a couple more glasses of water on my way to bed. then you can wake up the next morning, ehem, afternoon feeling alive. and you also get the bonus of an extraordinarily long and neon pee.

Shwasted? OMG. I didn't know people outside my nerdcrew said that. – Varelse Oct 20 at 3:20

During drinking: — Saturated fat (lard, butter, coconut oil) — Raw lemon juice (not from concentrate!)

During hangover: — Water (lots of!) — Magnesium supplements — If available, chicken or other animal broth (warm, also a little black pepper would be good) — Avoid PUFAs at this stage — Coconut oil or fresh homemade butter will be just great!

And, of course, do not eat any sugar!

Cheeseburger topped with bacon and avocado slices, no bun.

Nux Vomica

(I know, lots of the doubters will be jumping on me...but I did LOTS of research/experiments with this remedy in college...giving it to people, not telling them what it does, etc. Believe me, it works for "over-indulgence. I had (too) many people asking for my "pills" once they'd experienced the benefits.)

Coconut water - Grab coconut. Cut off top, drink the water.

My favorite cure: extra sleep, extra water, raw eggs and lots of tabasco sauce.

Apple cider vinegar and unprocessed sea salt in warm water (not too much of either) - homemade gatorade. Sauerkraut is also very good. After that, I heartily second the fatty protein suggestions.

I like sea salt, lemon, and a bit of honey. Add some powdered vitamin C. Drink up. – Kelly Jul 16 at 2:57

Bacon, ginger, and coconut water.

1 lb deli roast beef, 1 container fresh strawberries, 2 liters of cold filtered pond water with ice.

Ok, use filtered tap water.

Seriously.

I hate to be "that girl," but weed really does work some medicinal miracles, especially the morning after a long night out ;)

A while back, I read that taking a multivitamin prior to passing out (maybe keep it on your bedside table before you head out the door for shenanigans?) helps to replenish your body from whatever it looses during drinking (I'm no scientist; I can't get specific) and keeps your body/head from hating you the next morning. I have been doing this since because I find that it really works. I take a good multivitamin and drink a good amount of water with it and feel pretty stellar the next morning!

Spice + grease.

There is this wonderful Korean soup called "Yook Gae Jang" , which I make a big batch of and freeze for such occasions. You can omit the noodles or use Kelp/rice noodles.

Alcohol dehydrates you. The only 'cure' is to drink lots of water. Don't wait until the hangover to do this, drink lots of water the night before as well.

Same thing happened to me on Saturday morning, so I went for a 30 minute run. Yeah, the run sucked and I felt like ass during it, but afterwards I felt 10 feet tall and bulletproof.

definitely exercise, as long as you stay well hydrated. sweat it out! – Futureboy Apr 12 2011 at 18:36
I'd have to advice against exercise while drinking or while suffering from a hangover. Exercise increases blood pressure and circulation, therefore speeding up the rate at which the alcohol circulates around the body, and gets pumped into the cells. The liver and kidneys can only work so hard to keep up with the demand of cleaning your blood. The same rule applies to when you are sick with a cold. But as for a 'cure' to a hangover, plenty of water of course, and nutrient/antioxidant rich foods. :) – Rob Jul 16 at 4:17
Oh and electrolytes and vitamins. – Rob Jul 16 at 4:18

I fast all day during the hangover. Then in the evening i have BBQ. Works for me.

Chiming in to second what most everyone is saying: kombucha, coconut water, salty broth or soup, Fage Total, fatty meat. Feel better!

Eat lots of fat. Oddly enough, a bacon infused meat sandwich has always helped me get over hangovers. That, and lots of water.

For your sandwich, do you use lettuce or leaves as the "sandwich" part? How exactly do you make your sandwich? Thank you. – PinkPika Oct 20 at 3:23

My foolproof hanging prevention (and cure) is as follows - taken while ingesting, before bed, or upon waking - though prior to sleep is ideal:

• something fatty (brisket or fage...brisket preferred)

• something high in B vites (I use Jigsaw Active B complex as I don't eat most organ meats...though I know I should eat them)

• electrolytes - a little calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium

  • 250 mg potassium chloride or potassium gluconate

  • 250 mg magnesium (I use jigsaw time released magnesium as I can't tolerate any mag citrate/aspartate/glycinate etc)

  • 125-250 mg calcium citrate if I ate brisket instead of fage

  • sodium - a pinch only if there was no salt added to the meat, or if i used fage instead of meat

• 8 or so oz water

• motrin if sleep deprivation is expected, I'll use it to prevent the sleep deprivation headache. will also use in cases of "red wine headache" which can unfortunately occur for me with specific red wines at even lower intake levels (ie 2 oz)

ETA: not sure why some of the text is showing up in a brownish-red on my monitor. thoughts?

I pulled each item in your electrolyte list over to the left a little bit; I think the system thought you were trying to make a block quote. Just a suggestion of mine, hope it's OK, you could play around with it some more, it's your answer after all. – Paul Apr 12 2011 at 18:30

Three things that I find helpful are:

  • Canned fish (counter-intuitive, but true)

  • Coconut Water (the kind without sugar and stuff added)-

  • "Hair of the dog that bit you" - yes, a little bit of whatever gave you the hangover

coconut water is great. also, won't help you now, but if you drink it just before you go to bed, you will feel less like death in the AM – tartare Apr 12 2011 at 14:18
mmm, coconut water... – bettyrocker Apr 12 2011 at 19:05

If you are craving something carby or greasy try to come as close to it as possible without blowing it. Often your body is just telling you what it needs. Have a cheeseburger without the bun, see if that helps.

Add some bacon for extra kick. Yes, fat really helps. – Oranges13 Apr 12 2011 at 13:48

Good idea to avoid Tylenol, alcohol and Tylenol are a 1-2 punch to your liver. I would drink plenty of green tea, take a long slow run or walk, drink more water and a take a very long shower.

For the green tea- only if you are used to drinking it and can take it. For me green tea is a boost from vaguely sick to throwing up. I go for black tea! – JeJ May 6 2012 at 4:24

Water and sleep generally do it. If we have an upset stomach too, then maybe a little apple cider vinegar or ginger kombucha.

Second on the ACV, kombucha. Probiotics tend to help. – No more. Jun 25 2011 at 20:01
whew. Good call. Serious hangover today, and for some reason, cheetos sounded good. Now I'm doubly miserable. Ginger kombucha hitting the spot! – HA Apr 16 2012 at 0:44
