At 70 pounds overweight, I started eating Paleo in the latter part of February, 2011. I have lost roughly 15 pounds as of April 12 without any major exercise due to a back sprain. In a short period of time, my blood pressure went down and my joints quit hurting and ZERO Acid Reflux!!
My problem is that it has been two weeks of going up a half pound, down a pound, back up a pound, down a few ounces... up a few.. YOYOing on the scale no matter WHAT I eat the day before. I know it is healthier to lose weight slowly but people around me who are eating exactly what I am are losing more weight!
Breakfast is usually:
2 Eggs 2 Slices Bacon 1/4 cup of fresh berries
Lunch is generally: Meat from the night before such as boneless chicken, hamburger, pork loin Salad with 2TBS Dressing
Dinner is generally, boneless chicken, hamburger, pork loin, Salmon, Shrimp Steamed Broccoli Mushrooms Onions Peppers always with Mrs. Dash
Rarely hungry between meals. No late night snacking except the occasional glass of Coconut Milk.
The problem is this: I weigh myself every morning as soon as I wake. After losing the first five pounds, I seem to be moving one step forward and two steps back.
I am taking supplemental Vitamin D, B12, Fish Oil, Sea Kelp (Iodine), One-a-Day Multi daily.
I am wondering if I am getting the ratio wrong. I always have more meat than vegatables. I DO NOT cheat. I have not had any sugar, added sodium, cheese or dairy product or glutens of any kind.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or am I destined to hang on to 55 pounds that I do not want?
Also... How much water should I drink? I have read everything from only drink if you are thirsty to drink to flush out your system.
I feel so very all alone in my quest as I watch others lose without much effort at all.
Age and genetics are important factors in weight loss. You didn't mention how old you are, but if you're not under 30 there's a good chance you're going to have a tougher time of it. And if you're overweight by 70lbs, chances are you didn't win the effortless weight loss lottery. So it's important not to judge yourself by other people, lest you start creating impossible expectations. This isn't to say you can't lose the weight, mind you, just that the rate at which that loss occurs and the experience is going to differ substantially between individuals.
While it is possible that you are hypothyroid, or have some other metabolic problem which is causing your body to hold on to fat, it is far more likely that you are simply eating more than you need to for whatever reason. Before you start medicating or looking for a metabolic problem like hypothyroid, try out simpler non-medical interventions first. Start skipping breakfast and see what happens. Intermittent fasting has helped a lot of people lose weight without resorting to the calculator and maybe it will help you. If that fails and your appetite doesn't re-adjust to allow you to lose weight, you might need to take the reigns for a bit and track calories.
Also, invest in a bodyfat tracking scale. The absolute readings won't be accurate, but you can get an idea of changes over time. If your weight doesn't move but your fat percentage is going down, then you're doing good.
And if that doesn't work, then yeah, you might have a metabolic problem. But I seriously doubt you can tell that after a month or two into a new lifestyle.
More broadly, if you find yourself wavering after a little more than a month, it's time to give yourself a slap in the face and remember that you're going to be alive for years to come, and that what happens in the first two months will quickly be forgotten. It might take some work to maintain and there is no such thing as a perfectly even road, but barring calamity you'll be looking back on this post in a couple years glad that you didn't give up so soon. When I look back on my food logs and journal from the first three months of zero-carb paleo, I'm actually surprised I stuck with it (auto-immune issues flared up). But now, a year and a half later and medication free, I'm really freaking glad I did.
So 15 lbs in about 6 weeks or so? Yeah clearly it's not working for you. Maybe try just eating some lean cuisines or join WW maybe? Or got pick up one of those womens magazines with the latest and greatest diet on the cover. Yeah, that's probably your best bet for lifelong weight management and good health.
Now I say this with much love and complete understanding of where you are in your head right now but you need to end the pity party, stop your whining and give up this idea that weight loss is linear or that it will happen by some predetermined schedule or whatever other nonsense you have up in your head. No, two weeks without weight loss does not mean you will never lose another pound. It is this kind of thinking that will DO YOU IN. Don't let that happen. Focus on how far you have come and all the great results you have seen then settle in for the long haul.
If you don't already track your food I suggest you do that. It's hard to know what to change if you don't even know what you are doing. It could be any number of things. Or it could be nothing. Maybe your body just needs to take a breather? Maybe too much protein? Maybe too many carbs? Hard to tell without knowing what you intake looks like. Now is the time to take this to the next level and that starts with knowing exactly what you are eating, macros and all. Sorry if you don't like that but for many of us this is part of the deal.
And you are NOT alone. Where did you get that idea from? I lost 125 lbs then stalled for A YEAR with still another 50 to lose! Seriously. It happens a lot. You're not that special my friend. You are in good company. Just keep on the path. This works, you feel good, just keep going.
Sorry if I missed it, but I see in the headline you mention hypothyroidism and synthyroid, but then nothing in the message about those issues. Are you hypo and taking synthyroid? How often does your endo check your levels? What were your latest numbers like? Even within the "normal" range there is often room for improvement. Have you gone to www.stopthethyroidmadness.com? I found good info there that helped me challenge my doc's interpretation of my labs and course of treatment.
Just wanted to touch on your drinking Water question. I think you should drink water before you eat (at least 30 min prior) and throughout the day, wether you are thirsty or not. All bodily functions depend on proper hydration. Not sure if that fits into PALEO, but it's what I do. For my weight I drink between 7-8 glasses of water.
I have lowered my blood pressure w/ paleo even though it was already low. My goal was to be around 126# but I am at 119, no problem! It just takes time. Pre-paleo blood pressure 120/80 now it is 100/68.
You are hypothyroid and taking sea kelp suppliment. I thought this was ok until very recently. Apparently not if your consumption is too much. It can cause hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can cause weight gain. You are in a catch 22. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20919974?dopt=Abstract
I had the exact same situation I was following an almost totally carb free diet and the weight was holding on no matter what, I called my endocrinologist and requested to switch to the prescription Armour, the weight is now steadily falling off and I haven't changed a single thing. When I went back in for my 6 week blood work follow up the doctor even said some people do horribly on synthroid/levothyroxine and those people seem to feel so much better on Armour. Good luck!
Maybe the glass of coconut milk is an issue? That's a lot of calories right before you go to bed.... I was reading in Oxygen magazine that people who drank more plain water in a day were more successful with weight loss.
