Sardines seem like the perfect Paleo food, but I don't hear much about them. Do you eat sardine? What brands?

I have seen them packaged in mustard and hot sauce. It sounds good to me. – Mark V Apr 13 2011 at 18:08

I tend to eat canned wild salmon in this situation, but thanks for reminding me that there's another option! – Kim The Nourishing Cook Apr 13 2011 at 18:44

I eat a few cans a week, mostly on Fridays. I don't get anything fancy, whatever's cheapest, so I stay away from the ones in oil, since it's soybean. I don't care for the combination of fish and tomatoes, so I stick to the ones packed in water or mustard sauce. They're handy, tasty, and nutritious -- hard to beat that. – Aaron B. I can't find canned wild salmon where I live, so sardines are a good alternative. – gydle Jul 7 at 10:45

yup. I do Fisherman's Eggs regularly, makes for a great brunch. Trader Joes has some nice ones tinned in olive oil. watch out for the other varieties in soybean oil or canola. they're marked on the package.

i love the combo of fat and salt in sardines.. they are a nice slow-burning fatty fish, and the umami is out of this worldalt text

you can try this recipe for Fisherman's eggs. Easy and very tasty. Try them for breakfast, or pair with a leafy salad for a quick supper. Serves 4. Adapted from The Silver Spoon.

Heat the oven to 500°F and preheat an ovenproof serving dish for five minutes. Place a can of sardines, a small sliced shallot, a few sprigs of chopped parsley, and two cloves of finely chopped garlic in the warm dish. Add some black pepper and put the dish back in the oven for six minutes. Remove the dish from the oven, break four eggs into a bowl, and pour them gently on top of the sardine mixture. Season with salt and pepper and put the dish back in the oven for seven minutes, until the egg whites are cooked but still jiggly. Remove the dish and let it sit for five minutes (the eggs keep on cooking even out of the oven). Serve with hot sauce.

these complete my Sunday mornings :)

Wow! That looks good! – Mark V Apr 13 2011 at 19:20
Yes, I would pass on the soybean and canola oil. – Mark V Apr 13 2011 at 19:22
That sounds amazing! Gotta try it. – Futureboy Apr 13 2011 at 19:49
Looks great, I will definitely try this... thanks for sharing! Do you chop up the sardines or keep them whole? They look kind of chopped up in the pics... – Pierce Inverarity Apr 13 2011 at 21:28

Fresh sardines.

Grilled until the skin is crispy and then drizzled with high-quality olive oil mixed with fresh garlic and chopped parsley.

True Mediterranean delight.

Eat them whole. Heads, guts, spines and all.

Thank me later.

Here in Catalunya, "Sardinades" or Sardine BBQs are a summertime tradition. I can't wait. I can easily down a dozen. The heads are actually the tastiest part, and the first bite- always. – Joan Apr 13 2011 at 21:08
Yep, definitely the best way! But I skip the head, guts and spines:) – Primal Mama Apr 14 2011 at 12:25
A market nearby sells them 'fresh'... I've passed them over a number of times, but I figure they've got to be better than the canned version I have no troubles slurping down. – Casey Apr 14 2011 at 18:59

I like sardines, but when I started following this lifestyle I accidentally grabbed anchovies at the store. I didn't notice when I got home and didn't even notice until I put a big bite in my mouth. SALT ATTACK

Ha, I did that too. Terrible! – Casey Apr 14 2011 at 18:59
But that's the best part of the fish! – Dan Aug 5 at 23:45

I eat a can of sardines every other day. love them! Just eat them straight out of the can with a carrot at the side. Since I don`t drink milk their a good source of calcium. The brand I go for is King Oscar, a norwegian brand. Sardines in extra virgin olive oil. Expensive, but totally worth it.

I once had some sardines from the lunch-buffet at my work. My co-workers gave my plate a really strange look and asked if I had found a dead snake or something and put it on my plate.. lol..I wonder what they would have said if they knew I ate offals on a regulary basis as well... :P

King Oscar 2 layer for me. I was raised on Tiny Tots. – thhq Jul 7 at 13:37

Quiz...

How do you get your co-workers to stay away from your office and leave you alone?

Answer...

Eat sardines out of the can. They hate the smell and I love the solitude!!!

It's become a joke but it's still effective for getting my work done.

Ohhhhh man. I know this all too well; my office shares a vent with a co-worker across the hall...unfortunately for her ;) – Craig Jan 4 2012 at 1:29
Big problem for me is getting the oil on my fingers, then all over keyboard, screen, any papers lying around, clothes...pretty soon everything in the carrel smells like sardines. – thhq Jul 7 at 13:40
You serious? I know this is a paleo forum but theres this thing called a fork :) – RA Feb 28 at 16:01

I eat a few cans of Brunswick sardines in olive oil per week. They make for a convenient snack.

Me too - they are great snacks! Even though my co-workers don't always appreciate the odor! – Thumper Apr 13 2011 at 18:01

Tuna works just as well and costs less. My desk smells like the cat food carrel. – thhq Jul 7 at 13:35

I love them too, but there is only one brand (wild planet) I know of that has BPA free tins and they're expensive so I rarely buy them.

yeah, wouldn't it be nice if everything were still packaged in glass? – tartare Apr 13 2011 at 18:11
glass and paper, yes. I bought organic kale the other day and it smelled and tasted like plastic, surely because it had been in some sort of plastic and left in the sun or heat, totally permeated it. Gross! – Lauren Apr 13 2011 at 18:17
i try and do one packet of the wild planets per week. ones packed in extra virgin olive oil. – ben61820 Apr 13 2011 at 18:40
Crown Prince has a variety of seafood in BPA free tins: crownprince.com/bpa-free-cans.htm – arugula Aug 5 at 18:46

I can get stuff from the salad bar in the cafeteria at work and put my sardines over it, then use the olive oil from the can for the dressing which avoids the canola/soybean oil in all the dressings they have there - win/win.

by far the best brand I have found is Matiz sardines - large fleshy sardines not mush in a can. MMM, sardines, I think I will go have some right now. I also love to buy fresh sardines when available and grill them whole on my charcoal grill with salt and lemon. Delightful!

I eat sardines or mackerel at least 3x/week. Vital choice also uses BPA free tins. Matiz Gallego are good too. Buy them in olive oil with the bones and skin still there.

I eat the Wild Planet brand at least once per week. The lemon and EVOO one is very good, although I am kinda desiring a spicy version and WP doesn't make one. I may branch out, which I'm bummed about bcuz WP does a LOT of things right. At $2.99 per can, I think the "premium" over the other brands pricing is well worth it. It's such an inexpensive lunch or addition to salad. And you can buy in bulk online for less than that anyway.

I keep a bottle of Tabasco at my desk to kick up some spice in my sardines (and/or tuna). – Casey Apr 14 2011 at 18:58

Definitely! I eat at least 2 cans a week. Usually on my fast/gym days I'll wake up, drink tea and water all day, then about 30 minutes before I work out, I eat a tin of either Wild Planet or King Oscar in EVO...straight from the tin with a fork, but usually with my fingers. Haha my girlfriend hates it! I always try to kiss her afterwards, and she shoo's me away.

Butter, garlic, parsley, yum !

I like to either eat them alone (Snack) or mush them with boiled eggs, or other canned fish and spices to bake into nice fish burgers.

I love especially the smoked kinds, the regular from can can be a bit blah.

I used to also eat pasta with a tomato sauce made with fried mushed smoked sardines... I have to do something like that again! (of course without the pasta)

Yes, I eat Sardines several times a week. Don't really count, some weeks may go without any. Also eat, mackerel, salmon, herring, & tuna. As a whole I usually choose wild & packed in water when I can when eating any of these. Back to sardines, packed in water, smoked, in mustard, & occasionally in olive oil or tomato sauce. I love the idea of mushing them with boiled eggs mentioned earlier in the thread. Visited an Asian market recently and found Sardines a bit cheaper there. They also had a wonder variety of sea food, which I'll have to explore.

Yes, a couple of times a week. Only packed in Olive Oil. However this caveat: I empty out, and do not consume, the olive oil in the tin before dumping the contents of the aforementioned tin onto a plate or into a salad. I obviously can't get all of it, but I make sure not to consume it all.

Reason: I live in Spain, I only consume organic extra virgen Olive Oil. I know that there are many cheaper olive oils around... as well as scams to mix olive oil with vegetable oil... They surface every so often.

But anyway, think about it, you are a manufacturer of canned sardines. Are you going to buy the most expensive, highest quality Olive Oil on the market to put into your cans? Didn't think so. The cheapest? I would. It still gets me the label that says: "SARDINES IN OLIVE OIL".

^ The quality of the olive oil would be included in the price. So if it is bad (good) olive oil, you will be purchasing cheaper (more expensive) sardines. – foreveryoung Jul 7 at 14:15

I buy from the local bulk store packed in EVOO. Love 'em with hard boiled eggs.

I prefer Herring fillets by Brunswick: http://www.brunswick.ca/brunswick/usaenglish/product_mainpage.asp. I eat a can 4-5 times a week.

Delicious posts. I do sardines from the can (usually) in water some of the time. Variety is key!

Take em' out of the can, pour sardines and their juices into a small glass tupperware. Add dash of salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, and maybe some thyme (or whatever combination of spices you want), add some coconut oil or olive oil, warm it up by sitting it on top of a toaster oven, or just stick it in the oven...and devour.

I eat Wild Planet Sardines (in water) as my pre-workout meal three times per week. I mix 2 cans of sardines with Kimchi I buy from the market and enjoy.

Little King Oscars out of the can with hot sauce or giardiniera relish once a week. Spendy little buggers but good.

Now where's the pickled herring thread?

I get canned sardines occasionally as snack food or pre-dinner (something quick to break the fast while cooking real dinner). Season brand is the best canned sardine I've tried, but looking around the Web, there are several competitors for the consensus top spot.

In my experience, it's always best to get plain oil-packed sardines and add flavor (mustard, hot sauce, or whatever) only if you feel like it.

Where does everyone buy their sardines? I live in orange county...so I get mine at trader joes but I'm tryin to find some kind of ethnic market to buy cheaper and/or different variety from.

I LOVE sardines and eat them at least a few times each week. The brand I buy varies often though- I'm not too picky. They are one of the best foods on the planet, I think. Full of omega-3s and very low mercury.

I usually eat sardines at least a couple times per week. Not long ago I was visiting my brother and his family in Minneapolis. Very cold there and my hands were getting dry and cracked. Fortunately, I brought a few tins of sardines with me (because I thought I might have problems eating enough paleo foods while there) and started eating them. Within a couple of days my hands had healed significantly.
