I'm currently taking Probiotics 12 plus by Dr. Ohhira, the professional formula. I can only take one a day (first thing AM), the 2nd pill (12 hrs later) I had to stop because it was causing sleep disruption (I never have issues sleeping). I generally am very sensitive to any kind of pills, including vitamins which i cant take either.

My sister says I should be taking digestive enzymes (shes raising an autistic child with lots of eating issues etc.) as well. I tried one years ago but the dr. gave me one with soy in it, since I'm allergic to soy it did more harm than good and we never revisited the issue.

In reading threw a previous post someone said you need a probiotic with both lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. I'm seeing that this product has 12 strains of lactic acid bacteria including TH10 (?) I've not seen any marked change in my intestinal issues....maybe I need one with bifidonbacterium?

Can anyone recommend a good one with both? or should I switch to one with just bifidonbacterium? (can you recommend one that doesn't have to be refrigerated until opened because I have to ship it overseas)

How about digestive enzymes? should I? I do have digestive issues, at the moment not terrible but it could strike at any time and them it takes a while to recuperate. Any suggestions, again have to ship them, so no refrigeration (if needed?)

thanks, you guys are such a great help!!

Here are a couple of recommended sources for you. US Probiotics is an independent research group. I just finished reading this excellent book on probiotics by a Professor Pharmacology at Penn State. This book is very detailed and examines studies on probiotics and their use for a number of ailments. It also names some of the brands used in such cases.

Try NOWfoods Super Enzymes. Robb Wolf recommends them. I have had good success with them as well. They are free of soy, corn, wheat, and sugar. They are also cheap! I take Mercola's probiotics. They do not require refrigeration. I have taken both close to bed time and have not noticed any type of stimulation. Good luck.

Bio-Kult probiotic is great and has the bifidonbacterium along with 15 others... gapsdietstore.com is the source I believe. I'm taking this now and having good luck with it.

What are you trying to achieve with the probiotics and digestive enzymes? Knowing your goal and what you're suffering from might clarify what type of probiotics or bacterial strains you're looking for.

Dr. Ohira's is very well-regarded and is known to be effective in restoring the gut flora to their prenatal original state. At least, that's what many people say. But there are many others that are effective for different goals.

was told its good for me because of food allergies, which result in constant diarrhea. 5 years of issues, the only way to function is Imodium to slow digestion (when tested-20 minutes) removal of grains, processed foods helps but doesn't take much to aggravate....I have lots of food allergies. [crohns in family but no damage yet, chronic diarrhea & inflammation] probiotics, to restore the good flora which gets wiped out pretty often. Enzymes, always been vit deficient, can't take vit. when I cant keep much in my system I dont eat but broth; to help digest food and absorb the nutrients. – Kelly Apr 15 2011 at 13:31
