For a long time (years, since I was a kid) I'd get heartburn. I don't know how long I've had the muscle aches, but at least in the past couple of years the heartburn was accompanied by muscle aches and the only thing that would help the muscle aches (and in turn, sort of helped the heartburn) was taking a couple magnesiums. Over a while I've realized that I get heartburn and sometimes muscle aches (but the muscle aches are always with heartburn) when I eat grains/ sugar etc. I've also noticed it happens with coffee... major :-( !! Can anyone tell me why I might get muscle aches from the grains/sugar? Is it inflammation, and what exactly does that mean? I have a fatty liver which I'm sure is involved too. Why does magnesium help? And how can I avoid getting it when I drink coffee (especially if I drink coffee in the mornings on an empty stomach and go work out).

I used to have the same issue and determined that it was definitely predominantly the result of grains, specifically wheat. Like clockwork, every time I have a little grain fest, there it is. |

Heartburn is caused by the gut not having enough acid to digest food. Undigested food and gas wants to come back up the esophagas. I think the magnesium is something like and acid sopper but it does not cure the problem. Contrary to what the heartburn commercials say, acid soppers like Nexium, etc are only a temp solution. The cure is to take Betaine HCL to increase your stomach acid. Also apple cider vinegar can assist in acidifying the gut. 3 tablespoons in 8oz of water twice a day. It sounds like you have a disfunctional gut...called gut dysbiosis...or you may have Leaky Gut Syndrome. The best place I know of to heal your gut is the blog of Dr. Art Ayers http://coolinginflammation.blogspot.com/ Roam around his blog. Read all his postings and you will learn much about your gut and how to heal it. Stop eating the grains and sugar and wean yourself off of caffeine. You gut is probably so disfunctional that the caffeine can't handle it. And obviously your muscles are telling you to stop inundating your body with things it doesn't handle well. Listen to the very loud signals your body is sending to you. |

I don't know about the aches, but the heartburn I understand. I struggled for years with heartburn before trying paleo and realizing it was grain products causing most of it. A friend who was diagnosed with "acid reflux disease" and was told he'd need prescription antacids for the rest of his life has found that he can live without even over-the-counter antacids and not get heartburn if he avoids grains. For the record I eat lots of spicy food with no heartburn issues at all. A single donut or some pizza crust or pasta will cause heartburn though. |

I get heartburn very rarely, but it seems to be caused by eating the wrong types of fat (processed oils) in excess, or a ton of sugary/junk food. I don't get muscle aches, but I do get achy joints and it seems to be only after eating grains (or foods processed with grains, which I suppose is the same thing). Your symptoms could be caused by myriad things, even a combination of things. If I were in your shoes, I would eliminate as many potential triggers as possible--go on an elimination diet. After a week or two (or even longer), introduce one thing at a time and wait for any potential symptoms. A week or so later, add back another eliminated trigger. Continue on this path until symptoms reappear. Take action and keep away from the culprit(s). |
