This guy is like, the absolute authority on Grass-Fed beef. He lists everything, absolutely every single tiny little detail about everything... where the cut comes from, how it tastes, how to cook it, how not to cook it... etc etc.

Everything is priced out. Everything is listed. Everything is explained. Kinda reminds of that Rieske dude honestly.

A little overkill (ha. get it?), but honestly it makes me at least comfortable enough to consider placing an order, even though I'm all the way across the country from them.

They even have true foraged pigs and explain the difference between what some people say is pastured and truly "grass-fed"... now granted, he's gonna be baised, quite obviously, but at least he's speaking the right language here about how they raise their hogs.

I'm considering the Family Sampler Pack since I don't have an extra freezer at the moment.

Anyone ordered from here? Please describe your experience from all facets, including how the meat tastes!! This could be a great hack!

Jack, so far everything that I have cooked has been delicious-ground beef, minute steaks, sirloin tip roast, ribeyes, and unbelievable buffalo tenderloin (omg $30/lb but fantastic). Today I cooked a GF Pork butt ham (smoked uncured) and it was very tender and tasted like no other pork I have ever had. Their customer service is way above average. My experience: I called and left a message on Saturday, they called me back on Sunday morning and she took about 20 minutes on the phone to help me out as I had never bought a cow before. Answered all of my questions, and made suggestions as to how best to fill out my order to get the largest discount. When you buy 1/4 cow, they do a split 1/4 which is nice--you some cuts from the front of the cow and some cuts from the back of the cow for a nice balanced selection for $695. They called me back when some items that I ordered were unavailable and she made suggestions for replacements. They called me again to let me know my order had shipped, and then called again the next day when my order was delayed for one day due to UPS issue. My order arrived within three days, still frozen solid, everything neatly labeled. she even helped me determine the amount of meat that my freezer would hold. – texasleah Apr 4 at 0:12

Taste: All the beef cuts so far I have cooked are delicious. I have made sure to follow his cooking instructions which mostly consist of low and slow. The free range ham was for sure worth the money, along with the buffalo tenderloin, but that is a splurge.

The packaging for shipping is also unique...the meat is not in a foam tray with plastic wrap around it. It is shrink wrapped as you can see from the photo of my freezer. This is so that if the meat moves around in the large styrofoam lined box, it keeps it from ripping open and being exposed to air. I think this is a great touch.

Sorry for the delayed response!

ahhh, tax season is finally over...maybe now I can play on paleohacks again! – texasleah Apr 28 2011 at 15:55
thank you for sharing this website! these prices are way better than my local grass-fed beef! – MPie Mar 3 at 23:37

I've been ordering from them for years. I do about 3 big orders per year to fill up the freezer chest. This saves big time on shipping -- the cost ends up being only $0.50 a pound.

Plus, their prices are lower than what I was paying back when I bought locally.

I've never been disappointed by these folks.

for me the shipping is too high, and I am afraid to wait so long for meat. US Wellness has very low shipping and it takes always only two days to have the food by the doors, still frozen solid. But they seem to have some great cuts. Maybe I will try them some day in the future...

Lex Rooker orders all his food from Slankers. He gets ground meat and ground pet food and mixes them together for his daily intake once a day. He eats about 75%-80%fat and the rest protein and he eats it raw. He buys the pet food to keep the cost down because he suspects the petfood is not ground at a USDA certified facility...but he doesn't care since in 4 plus years he has never once had any problem.

You can read Lex's journal:

http://bit.ly/hp0ftR

all 131 pages from June 2008 to current.

The way he eats works for him. He does not advocate it for anyone else. It just works for him.

I live in Florida, so I was concerned with the long distance as well. I had a great experience with Slankers and will order from them again. I bought about 75 Lbs of various cuts. it arrived in a very insulated box, probably home made, still frozen solid. all of the meat I have eaten has been great. I bought Steaks, high fat ground beef and bones for broth. Until my local grass finisher has a regular supply, I will continue to buy from Slankers.

I ordered from them once. The meat arrived slightly thawed but I won't completely blame them because it seemed that UPS/Fed-Ex delayed the shipment. I also thought the shipping prices were a bit high especially for how long it took to arrive. Somewhere like US Wellness Meats only charges you 8 bucks for shipping and they usually ship it next day.

I order from them regularly, usually short ribs because they are cheapest and fattest cuts and organs. Nothing exciting because I am not into farmed meat even if it is grass fed. I prefer wild carcasses which I consume from head to toe. I supplement with Slankers when I run out of wild meat.

As far as too much info I think that's simply marketing, I don't even read that stuff.

yah well i don't run around the wild forests and spear game very often so I gotta order from slanker's or something. that's pretty cool if you do something like that. welcome to paleohacks. – Jack Kronk Apr 16 2011 at 4:36

I have ordered twice from Slanker's and I am very pleased. They only ship in the early part of the week to avoid weekends. Their prices are WAY better than US Wellness meats. The first time, a few pieces were slightly thawed, but very cold. The second time, everything was still frozen solid. I highly recommend them.

I have only ordered once (no pork), seemed comparable to US Wellness. I since have found someone local to provide my meat. My family likes the T-Coon's The Stuff seasoning. I do like the idea that you call your order in.

Haven't ordered from them, but I'm lucky enough to live near a health food store that carries a small selection of their meats. I've had the rump roast and the ground beef and it was good stuff. The store also carries their porterhouse steaks, but I haven't splurged for that.. yet.

I've ordered several times from them so far, very large orders ($750.00). I love it. No pork so far, but lamb, chicken and beef. Wide variety of cuts, but no organ meat yet. I'm about to place an order which will include pork and some organ meat. I also ordered my turkey from them this year. They carry Frank Reese's turkeys, which I've ordered directly from him before, so I know it will be good. Weird thing, though, I think Slanker's offers them at a better price than directly from Frank. I've purchased their pet food, for the stray kitten my son found some time ago, and she scarfs it down. Sleekest little cat with the glossiest fur ever. I love, love, love, the taste of their meat, and so does my family. I know some people say they have a hard time adjusting to the taste of grassfed meat in general, but that was not our experience at all. I have ordered from La Cense a couple of times, and they are far pricier but there was no difference in quality between them and Slanker's. Slanker's has better variety by far, but I wish they offered Osso Buco cuts. I seriously hope this guy is around selling his meat forever, cause I like it that much and I love his commitment, integrity and enthusiasm. Great customer service too. I wish I lived closer to get eggs from them as well. Hope this helped.

In my 5th wheel, I have only a small fridge and tiny freezer with no capacity in the electrical system to accommodate an additional freezer.

The 20-lb minimum knocks me out of Slanker's but I am able to handle the 7-lb minimum at US Wellness.

I'm sure Slanker's is great though!

Can't recommend it.

Of all the reviews I read on Slanker's, not one mentioned that the cuts are packaged in very thin plastic; some with holes in the plastic; not waterproof. They all arrived frozen solid, but some were partly frosted underneath the thin plastic.

their choice of packaging is explained on their website. they put quite a bit of thought and care into exactly why they package their meat as they do. – Jack Kronk Feb 13 2012 at 21:54
The packaging is not really a problem, you just have to have a drip plate for it when you thaw. – Brandon Sep 20 at 20:19

We get all our meat from Slankers. Always a 60lb order (maximum for one box). We try to order in the winter because in other seasons it usually arrives partially thawed (we're in northern virginia).

Hi Brandon. Thanks for you answer. How do you like the meat? Got any tips on how you've found the best way to cook/prepare it? – Jack Kronk Sep 21 at 14:35

I have placed three large orders with USWellness and found in every order that there were holes in several packages. After the first order I called and they suggested that I have the cuts wrapped in paper for shipping. I asked for this on the next two orders and still had holes in a large amount of the packaging at least 25%. I believe that this is happening before shipping because the meat is all wrapped in paper. They do refund money for the bad packages, but it is really a pain to thaw something out then realize there was a hole in the bag.

Does anyone else have experiencing with this? This happens way to frequently to think that I somehow am having "bad luck". I really think this must be happening to everyone.

Can anyone recommend another vendor? I was going to use Slanker's until I read a post above about thin packaging.

I really hate shelling out all this money for health reasons then potentially exposing myself infected meat.

I love Slankers. I actually learned about Paleo through all of his articles and have ordered lots of the beef sausage (and pork when they have it) as well as up to half a cow. I have always had a great experience with them and I love the meat and the prices. I've never understood why everybody loves US Wellness meats and they are always talked about (and advertised on every Paleo website). I think that Slankers is a lot better priced especially when you order in bulk. Plus, having him so eccentric makes me think he cares about the food as much as I do.

Slankers is fantastic. I just received my first order from them (I usually rotate through a variety of grassfed sellers online and off) but decided to order from Slankers after looking at their prices and cuts. Everything came frozen solid in one very heavy (56 lb) box. I just cooked a smoked pork shoulder roast that was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my entire life. I will definitely order from them again.
