The photos are from this blog post by the photographer who took the photos.

The Bayaka hunters in the forests of the Central African Republic will go along way.

How far would you go for some honey?

Puts things into perspective when you buy your food from a shop. I think it can be easy to forget when discussing what to eat that we no longer have risk death daily to put food on our table. People spend so much time disscussing the problems with food now.

Do you remember to really appreciate the abundance of nutritious, tasty food that is now readily avaliable to most of us?

Thanks for posting that. I'm actually giving a talk on paleo eating and exercise principles this morning and I had some nice graphs showing increase in sugar consumption over time vs obesity and type II diabetes. But a picture like this should really put it into perspective for people how hard it was (and should be) getting at sugar sources.

Hmm....are you Robb Wolf? – Tim Apr 16 2011 at 14:18
Nah, then I'd be RW. ;) That picture did do the trick in the talk though...I could see people nodding and the everything clicking in their heads when I transitioned from a graphic of obesity vs sugar consumption to how hard it was to get sugar for most of human history (e.g. climbing that damn tree). – RG73 Apr 16 2011 at 20:05

I love my honey, so I would be willing to go pretty far to get it and also willing to get stung.

I am reading this book, Letters from the Hive, http://www.amazon.com/Letters-Hive-Intimate-History-Humankind/dp/0553382667/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1302973705&sr=8-2 and it is really, really interesting.

I am afraid of heights though, so I would go a far distance, but I'm not sure how high up!

My neighbors across the street keep a hive. I have to figure out a way to get some honey out of them. – sherpamelissa Apr 17 2011 at 13:58

I would definitely partake...in the event, and the reward. Look at what great shape that dude is in! Like zero bodyfat and rippling, sinewy muscle. Good exercise.

Robb Wolf made a comment that many of the "neolithic" foods we eat today are actually paleolithic foods that would have been REALLY hard to get....like bananas and most fruits for example. Unless you were in amazing physical shape...you would have never eaten these foods.

Think about all the veggies that grow in the ground. So even a couch potato could have gotten ahold of them.

if your Paleo ancestors came from what is now known as Europe they would have lived their whole lives without seeing a banana. Fruits like oranges and bananas would not be Paleo for a person with those genetics. – Mark V Apr 16 2011 at 16:59

18.5 miles. Approximately.

To the Rockerfeller Farmer's Market in NYC, it's about 10 blocks from my work, sadly it's not open year round. :) So I just buy a large 5lbs jar of honey, raw, unfiltered, and it lasts all year (though it might crystalize a little by the end).

What, were you expecting me to go get stung? "This isn't a historical re-enactment folks." (say that in Robb Wolf's voice please.) If it was, after getting stung, all that honey would be eaten immediately and presumably the sugar overdose would cause either an "I am Cornholio" episode, or a diabetic coma. :-)
