After sprinting today for the very first time, I found myself extremely thirsty but water just didn't cut it.

I ended up gulping down about 3-4 oz of coconut milk straight from the can. Probably not the best idea, but it worked for the moment.

What's the most effective paleo recovery drink?

Eating dinner finally about an hour after. Feels good!

I typically just drink water. If I know I'm going to kill myself with an intense endurance workout, I might have a decaf coffee with some heavy cream, and maybe a piece of homemade jerky. Actually, I did just that about 45min before spinning for an hour the other day, and while I'd normally feel exhaustion set in after 30min instead I just kept going, had energy throughout. Though, that might just be due to my body finally adjusting to the workout. Either way, used to do the same thing before long runs where I'd mix in hill sprints. – Ryan Apr 19 2011 at 1:24

coconut water. vitacoco – tartare Apr 19 2011 at 1:51
Didn't help it was really cold out there either. Running in the cold always wrecks my lungs. – Oranges13 Apr 19 2011 at 2:35
agree with the coconut water. over summer also took water and added a bit of lemon and a pinch or two of salt in there for during workouts. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Oct 21 2011 at 11:41
For most workout days I stick to water with ground up BCAA powder, but for 12+ mile days I prepare a yam puree with powdered egg white and spices. – Adulescens Appetens Oct 22 2011 at 3:22

I don't know that it is technically a "recovery drink," but I have been drinking some BCAAs mixed in water post workout. It is usually an hour or so from the end of my workout until I get to a place to where I can eat. The BCAAs seem to give me something that water doesn't (whether they actually do, I'm not certain - don't care because I enjoy it).

I've read a little about these, thought about looking into it more, but it seems that's more for building as apposed to leaning out. – Oranges13 Apr 19 2011 at 2:34
I would tend to disagree re: building as opposed to leaning out. I would prefer to build but cannot do whey or other dairy. I use the following: bodybuilding.com/store/mrm/… It has some non-Paleo sweetener, but I picked it up after reading a recommendation on this site. If you want to read more about BCAAs and leaning out, you might check leangains.com if you haven't already. – Tom R. Apr 19 2011 at 14:31

I like coconut juice aka coconut water for post-workout. I get them in 17.5 oz cans (Amy & Brian brand)and the taste is so heavenly that i have no probably downing the whole thing in a few minutes. Coconut juice is naturally high in electrolytes.

Taste Nirvana is my favorite - more flavorful but slightly less sweet than A&B's. A&B is my second favorite. – Harfatum Oct 22 2011 at 3:16

I just drink water if I am thirsty after a workout, but the coconut milk sounds good, too.

Typically water. You don't want to spike your insulin levels right after your workout. Take it easy and just drink water. Wait until you are hungry, then have a good meal.

Water or coconut water/milk sounds great.

I've also been enjoying a tablespoon of ground turmeric and a tablespoon of gelatin powder stirred into a glass of cold water... It seems to make aches and bruises fade super fast.

A whole tablespoon of turmeric? Is that ridiculously bitter? – mari Jul 19 2011 at 18:48

If it's intense stuff like sprints I'd go with coconut water and whey powder, if you're trying to gain strength and come back stronger. BCAAs are goodtoo but I can never get them to mix well so PWO it's too much of pain.

If you're trying to lose fat though I'd stick with water.

gyday hacks..

i do the coconut milk thing too.....before and after.......

but be warned....your tummy will purge this through your whole body and cleanse you like never before if you drink it too warm.....its like giving yourself a colon cleanse from a can.....

its not really a bad thing if thats what you want to do.....but best to drink it 'cold from the fridge'

cheers.

Zeranol. It's the alcoholic form of zerane.

Zerane is the only hydrocarbon with no carbon atoms. Thus, as pentane is named for five carbon atoms, octane for eight, and so on, zerane is named for zero carbon atoms. Zerane's chemical formula is simple: H.

When you add the alcohol whatchamacallit, the OH, you get HOH, usually written as H2O. Some people think theyre very clever by calling it dihydrogen oxide, thus concealing the fact that they're drinking alcohol. But one look at them and you know they're saturated with the stuff. Unless they're mummies at the Egypt exhibit.

I say, be proud, zeranolics! You been drunk since you were just a twinkle in daddy's eye! Hard to beat a bender like that!

Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen.
