Rumor has it (from the man himself) that Charles Barkley has been signed up for CrossFit. I admit that I'm kinda excited about this because at our house we have a soft spot for him. :)
On one hand he could be back to fighting form fairly quickly if he was truly commmitted, especially if he ran into some paleo devotees who got him to drop the grains and industrial oils. On the other, if he's into it half-heartedly, sports fans could be getting an awful lot of griping about workouts as an accessory to his daily sports commentary.
Your predictions: Is this good or bad for CrossFit? Good or bad for Sir Charles?

Anybody know if he's still doing it two months later?
not a crossfitter but do my lifting at a gym that has it. from what i've seen, crossfit is perfect for former athletes getting their health back. one thing that's always made me kind of chuckle at the crossfit folks geeking out on their workouts is that it's the same stuff i was doing when i was playing football at a high level in high school- the powerlifting and plyo with some oly and gymnastics thrown in. now being at the ripe age of 33, i'd rather just look good with as little work and time as possible which means 2-3 half hour heavy lifting sessions a week and a lot of life-walking. funny thing is the minimalist approach to working out hasn't hurt my performance much at all.
It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. He's a big guy, and a career in pro level basketball does MAJOR wear and tear on the body (knees/legs in particular). While I hope it works out for him, I question if he'd really be able to keep it up.
If anyone could be convinced to eat saturated fat all day long, it is Charles Barkley. The issue with Charles is that he's going to have to lay off the booze. If he can stop drinking and really embraces crossfit (and hopefully some form of paleo-ish eating), he'll be a ridiculous beast crossfitting. He was one of the most athletic guys in the NBA when he was young, and in his prime he was probably the 2nd or 3rd best player in the league. I'd be really interested to see what someone with (at one point) elite NBA athleticism could do in crossfit, even in their late 40s.
Let's not confuse/cross Paleo and CrossFit. Yes, Paleo would be good for Sir Charles. However, he said he is doing CrossFit. Many individuals do well at CrossFit and see significant health benefits from adopting its training protocol without a Paleo diet. I would hope his exposure to the diet would encourage him to give it a try, but as mentioned above, Charles has never been known to adopt a very strict diet, even at the height of his athletic career. My main hope and concern is that his power clean is signficantly smoother than his golf swing.
