anybody feel this way after a nice WOD. I fast until my pre workout drink (NoXplod) then drink some whey. About an hour after I eat usually eggs with some coconut oil.Any suggestions. It's been about 4 hours and I feel lousy. I am able to funtion but definetly not fun. Probably just adjusting to the systematic beatdown of a good WOD.

Keep fasting and eat closer to the end of your workout, lots of meat lots of fat! :) – Oranges13 Apr 21 2011 at 19:36

I would drop the NO-Xplod. I beleive it's main ingredient is caffeine, iirc.

Also, here's the warning from the product: (note the dizzines side effect)

Okay, it's probably just a lack of carbs, as noted above. – Dave S. Apr 21 2011 at 16:34

No PWO carbs? Might want to add 100-200g of those in the form of sweet potato, potato, or white rice. I had the same problem for a few weeks, then I introduced a pound of yam or white potato after every workout. No more dizzies.

EDIT: Ben reminded me that I should probably mention that I have a pound of steak (top round -- very cheap) in addition to the pound of starchy food after each workout.

Absolutely agree with this. Lean protein and glucose from starchy carbohydrate post workout is gold. You will feel good for the rest of the day. I do it everytime. – ben61820 Apr 21 2011 at 16:34
What kind of work out do you do? A pound of steak and a pound of yams is something in the neighborhood of an entire DAY'S worth of food for me. What kind of work and how long? If I ate like that I'd turn into a lard ball O_O 1600 calories as it is is preventing me from losing weight. – Oranges13 Apr 21 2011 at 19:12
It's about 1600 calories -- a lot, I know. I'm overfeeding PWO on purpose. I'm doing a pure strength program at the moment with the intention to gain size and functional strength, basically the prescription from Starting Strength + 8 or so assistance exercises. This definitely isn't "Paleo", but it seems to be working for me. I'll phase it out once I reach my body composition goal... maybe :). As it is, I'm 5'10", 140 lbs. @ about 5-7% body fat. In a word, scrawny. That's gotta change, and I'll be damned if PWO meals like that won't do it. – becker Apr 21 2011 at 19:25
T_T I'd love to have your stats, but as a woman that will never ever happen. I'm the same height, have 40 pounds on you and about 35% more body fat. – Oranges13 Apr 21 2011 at 19:35
Hah, I don't think you'd want my stats as a woman... your organs would be goo before you hit 5% body fat. Keep fighting the good fight, and you'll be at a lower body fat % in no time. – becker Apr 21 2011 at 19:58

Where's your post workout drink? Waiting an hour before getting any real food after an intense workout with only a pre-workout drink = you're probably screwing your body over. Especially if you aren't fat adapted yet (you're crashing on your blood sugar levels).

When you're doing a x-fit WOD, you are burning glucose for energy; at that high of an output, fat is minimally being used for energy, even in a fat-adapted person.

What does this mean? If your burning carbs, eat some carbs!

When your blood sugar hits rock bottom (feeling light headed), that is a very stressful event for the body... cortisol is released to bump up your blood sugar levels. This can have some nasty downstream effects on testosterone, thyroid, insulin sensitivty, etc.

This is not a good thing. To prevent this from happening, make sure you have some carbs in you before and after the WOD. There will likely prevent these problems.

White rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes, bananas, whatever... any food carb source is fine as long as it doesn't have nasty plant chemicals (wheat, etc). They all get broken down to sugar anyway..

I don't necessarily eat any carbs before or after a workout. I typically have either some decaf with heavy cream, maybe a piece of beef jerky before, and then within an hour after a work out I have dinner. I've yet to feel a lack of energy, or dizziness. – ryan Apr 21 2011 at 16:48
good for you. perhaps your body is already adapted to a higher work capacity? or maybe your not training as intensely or often? give it several months and lets see what happens... – Tyler S Apr 22 2011 at 6:06

Try eating more real food. Fat, carbs, protein.

This was happening to me, and I found out I was anemic. So maybe check out your blood work.
