This question isn't designed to control for confounders, but I'm interested in learning what problems you have deemed resolved as a result of eating/living a la Paleo. I'm interested in symptoms, physiological changes, health indicators, physician diagnoses - the works.
Depression (I know you said physiological problems, but I'm convinced that depression very much is an organic problem)?
Surprised nobody has mentioned mood yet--this was a dramatic (maybe the most dramatic) change for me after going paleo. I used to have pretty bad problems with depression, particularly in the winter. Changing my diet has diminished these problems nearly completely. PMS-related mood swings have gone away as well.
And the usual suspects--clearer, softer skin, no more upset stomachs, more energy, digestive regularity, way reduced allergies...
Also--and I'm baffled by this--I smoked for 7 years, tried to quit a handful of times, but I was always back on the nicotine within a week or two. After being paleo for about 4 months, I woke up one morning and decided to quit cold turkey, and I did, with very little trouble. Haven't had a cigarette in over 2 months (previously, my record was 10 days). I'm not sure if this actually has anything to do with the diet (I can't think of any reason it would), but if not, it's a weird coincidence.
I don't think permanent is the word as I figure the problems will probably come right back if I went off paleo.
There have been a lot of little things. My lower back pain is gone. My lower back used to hurt a lot. Exercise would not fix it. I rememember many times standing in the shower and standing hurt because my back hurt. That is all gone now. PLus I used to not be able to sit up for long periods without back support or my back would soon start to hurt. I had that for as long as I can remember, even way back in high schoo, but not anymore. Also, some weird shoulder pain that was nagging in recent years is mostly gone now.
Other smaller things, my fasting blood sugar is done. Used to be in the 90s, now about 10 points lower, maybe more.
Hair texture changed, now more wavy like when I was younger.
More energy, you will sometimes fine me jogging up the driveway after coming back from chores, just because I feel like it.
Acne probs almost gone, I think mostly from not using soap on my face anymore.Skin heals faster now too. PLus there is the classic lessening of tendency to sunburn.
I sleep less now and with the addition of magnesium supps plus paleo, my sleep is sound each night. I used to sometimes wake up tired due to restless nights.
I lost weight and perhaps becuase of that but probably also because of paleo in general, a nagging pain in the back of my feet is also gone. Not sure if that will be permanent or not. It was a very old problem from back in elementary school. I always assumed it was some kind of prob with tendon irritation and it was triggered mostly by heavy exercise. It would be nice if that really stays gone! THe reason I don't think the cure is just weight loss is because I had that prob even when I was younger and lighter.
I know this was not in the original question, but I feel the urge to also add problems that were probably CAUSED by paleo. THe one thing that jumps out it right after going paleo, my teeth started to become translucent in the front. I suspect this happened because I had cut out some of my previous sources of magnesium because they were carby. PLus they say that eating meating increases need for magnesium and my intake was probably already borderline even before paleo. I think it bares keeping in mind that no one diet is always perfect for everyone and some tweaking may be needed. In my case, magnesium supps along with paleo have been the answer, although if I made a concerted effort, I could probably get the magnesium by eating a LOT of magnesium rich foods instead of the supps. It's just that my random style of eating whatever I felt like within the paleo mileau of foods just was not getting me sufficient magnesium for my specific needs.
I am off my blood pressure medication after taking it for 9 years. I lost 100lbs and still had high blood pressure, my doctors were stumped. I am only 39 and didn't want to be on meds for the rest of my life. After switching to Paleo eating, I was able to drop the medication and my blood pressure is still okay. Next up is getting off my diuretic pills.
Only one month in, and my acid reflux is gone. GONE. I used to wake up choking on stomach acid, coughing until I vomited, 4-5 nights a week. Now? NOTHING. No heartburn, no reflux. It couldn't have healed that fast, so it's got to be the difference in what I'm eating. I never expected results this quickly.
I know that if I deviate from a Paleo/Primal lifestyle for more than a week, some of my symptoms, like acne, will come back (have done this a couple times). However, I refuse to go longer than a week, as I'm positive all my problems will come back if I completely call it quits. Plus it's hard as hell to "detox" time and time again!! This lifestyle has absolutely changed my life.
I'd agree that if paleo is stopped, by issues would be back.
My Keratosis Pilaris has cleared up almost completely, my blood glucose is down (I'm diabetic). I developed a rare/uncommon skin condition called Lichen Sclerosus which is thought to be autoimmune after giving birth to my son (he was 6 months old when symptoms appeared). Although not completely resolved, it's a lot better!
My background diabetic retinopathy has disappeared (my eyes are checked yearly) and my skin feels nicer all round.
I had some issues during my second pregnancy and ended up losing hair on my arms, legs & outer eyebrows. Most of the hair has & is growing back :-)
I am not always 100% due to being disorganised & having to think of what to feed a family. So, I'm sure that if I were 100%, then the little things would clear up too!
A basic fear of eating (perhaps anorexia?) due to the inability to digest the types of food I did eat - oatmeal, cereal, meat (but never beef). Now, regardless of the situation I am in, I am comfortable that I will find something that is at least reasonably agreeable as far as my digestion is concerned (i.e. meat and vegetables).
I've noticed very obvious positive changes physically and mentally. I don't get headaches or stomache aches ever especially since avoiding gluten. I have more energy and don't feel hungry all the time. More positive mood overall and more relaxed feeling. I actually tan and don't burn so fast in the sun anymore.
