SO my wife has one hitch with paleo, and that is her daily serving of yogurt. It keeps her female "issues" away, her words not mine. So for the ladies that may have had this issue out there, what have you found that keeps this away on a paleo diet?

A comment... I have an autoimmune condition called Lichen Sclerosus. It can be misdiagnosed as candida/thrush when it's anogenital. Just make sure that her thrush is thrush and not something else if it's reoccuring. FWIW, I have diabetes and have only ever suffered thrush once (as a teenager). – Efaitch Apr 28 2011 at 19:53

im sure shes talking about yeast infections? getting rid of sugar will be HUGE, but let her have the yogurt, kefir, anything with probiotics, lots of garlic, too. in fact (TIM for the boys) you can always pop a whole clove up there to take care of any "issues". tea tree oil works well, too. umm, and (REALLY TMI for the boys and maybe for the girls, too) a friend of mine used to fill a cardboard tampon applicator (sans tampon) with plain yogurt and mashed garlic, then freeze and insert. you know, if youre opposed to taking it orally....

have i crossed a line here?

no line crossed in my opinion - just good advice. – Thumper Apr 28 2011 at 18:28

Wow, definitely TMI, but needed TMI. Never knew any of that stuff. – Annie Apr 28 2011 at 18:33

Oh yeah I forgot about the garlic trick. It does work. When I used it I put a piece of embroidery thread through the middle of the clove for easier removal. It makes you taste garlic! – PaleoCurious Apr 28 2011 at 18:36

Ha...took a second for me to get what you meant, PC. At first I thought, "Well of COURSE it makes you taste like garlic." ahem Now that I get what you mean, that's just...fascinating. – Rose Apr 28 2011 at 18:51

I'd say you better check your equipment, buddy!

If she is low carb, you are probably reinfecting her...

{LOL...now you've edited the original question to avoid pointing the finger at you.}

I am the paleo one, she is considering it after seeing my success. No grain in this train ride! – Spelhaug52 Apr 28 2011 at 18:25

I think Marie meant this literally, as in the personal hygiene of your equipment. And I agree. – Jennie Apr 28 2011 at 20:42

Yes, I meant literally. Men think their junk stays magically clean, no matter where it has gone or what their nutritional intake has been. Yeast issues are a tango, not a solo, if you know what I mean. – Marie Apr 29 2011 at 1:23
Sarcasm is a wonderful thing. I understand what you are saying, but there is no issue there. I am a before bed shower guy, so prior to the act there has been a shower. Not saying that there has never been a nooner, but most of the time it is pre bed time activity. – Spelhaug52 Apr 30 2011 at 0:24

No, Spelhaug52, you need to go to a dr. and get tested. No sarcasm in THIS comment :) I'm just trying to help your love life. – Marie Apr 30 2011 at 4:20

Bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a common problem with folks that have crappy gut flora. Everyone has yeast, but those who have a more favorable environment (gut permeability, lack of good bacteria, inflammation) tend to get yeast overgrowth. Low carb paleo coupled with a good quality probiotic or the occasional fermented food like Kimchi, sourkraut, or coconut kefir does the trick. These are all good non-dairy sources and will help rebuild gut culture. One more tip on the probiotic, make sure it has at least 8-10 different strains of bacteria and at least 2 billion of each in a dose. Most yogurt, aside from quality issues and sugar, only has acidophilis and maybe one other and studies show that even those have trouble adhering to gut tissue. If your lady still wants to keep the yogurt in her diet, with a little research in your area you can usually get your hands on a raw non-pasturized source. Lastly, things that can hammer your healthy gut flora: 1. Chlorinated tap water 2. Antibiotics 3. Pain meds like NSAID's 4. Heavy stress 5. Lack of exercise 6. Sugar, especially fructose

Lacto-fermented vegetables can be an alternative to yogurt. – Alchemille Apr 28 2011 at 19:57
The bacterial content of yogurt has shown to be more affective at adhering to gut tissues than pill-form probiotics, which show very low efficacy in clinical studies (wasn't sure if you said the revers?). A more fermented food, like sourkraut, kefir, etc would be the most abundant and diverse source of microorganisms. – JeJ Feb 14 2012 at 20:50
Where did you read that and can you post a link please (yogurt vs probiotic study) – Dr. Ryan Feb 15 2012 at 16:58

I'm sure you will get some answers with alternatives, but if that's what working for her, I say let her be. Just make sure the yogurt is a high quality, organic, full-fat version, etc. How long has she been on Paleo? Just getting rid of the sugars and grains will be beneficial to her. She might not need the yogurt forever.

...and preferably full-fat yogurt from grass-fed cows. – gilliebean Apr 28 2011 at 18:25
She is looking into trying it, but does not know how to commit with out yogurt. – Spelhaug52 Apr 28 2011 at 18:26
or goat yogurt is good too! – Thumper Apr 28 2011 at 18:27

So she hasn't even tried Paleo yet? She might have the beasties from all those grains and sugars. See if she will commit to 30 days, she is bound to feel better. – Annie Apr 28 2011 at 18:31
yup! lots of yogurt brands out there are LOADED with sugar, make sure its not (because that will continue to aggravate her "issues") and that its full fat, grass fed if possible. – tartare Apr 28 2011 at 22:55

Paleo will probably be all the cure she needs - give it 30 days and I bet it won't be a problem anymore. Sugar was the direct cause of any outbreak I've ever had. I knew if I went on a junk food and soda binge what else was right around the corner.

she can get probiotics in pill form instead of yogurt which should work just as well. also, if she hasn't cut out grains and sugars yet, that is the first step. she may not need the yogurt or probiotics once the sugar and grain aren't feeding the yeast.

Pill forms of probiotics show very low efficacy in clinical studies, the main issues being the viability of the cells and the adhesion to the gut lining. My verdict on these is 90% of the time they cost more than they are worth. Lacto-fermented vegetables, saurkraut, kefir etc would be a more beneficial (and cost effective) solution. – JeJ Feb 14 2012 at 20:52

Fermented veggies like sauerkraut. Bubbies is a good brand or you could ferment at home, cremé fraiche is a higher fat probiotic cream, unflavored full fat Grassfed yogurt like seven stars creamery or brown cow should be fine in moderation too.

Oh yeah, also, keeping the PH "up there" low helps too. My mom, who is post-menopausal sprays a little apple cider vinegar on her index finger every morning and just swipes it up there to keep the beasties away. I don't need it but before I went paleo and got more candida issues it was very helpful.

Like Annie says, I wouldn't sweat the yogurt as long as it's high quality. There is a special probiotic for the ladies out there, if she's interested in alternatives- http://www.iherb.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Fem-Dophilus-60-Capsules-Ice/9346?at=0

If you get a really bad yeast infection, inserting bodice acid "up there" helps too. You can get a bottle of the powder at Amy drug store, get gel caps and insert 3 a night for 7 days. Wear a pad tho

Wow, I meant to say BORIC ACID. I just now realized my auto correct mess up. Sorry – Sue Holt Aug 5 at 16:20
