I am moving to Richmond, VA in a month and I have been searching for a good BJJ center, however, there are not many with "lunch" time classes and I am not available after work. I did find one center that has classes at 6am, but wasn't sure how that would shake out on an empty stomach. Has anyone ever done BJJ on an empty stomach and did you find your performance to lack in anyway?
I do all hard exercise on an empty stomach. I feel so heavy and shitty running around or something while digesting. The most I ever have in my system when I'm doing hard exercise (which I do almost every day!) is a lunch consisting of a big bowl of lettuce, a handful of nuts, and maybe a banana or something. Even then, I don't always do that. Often I go out without having eaten for over 20 hours.
In other words, I would find my performance lacking if I DID eat a big meal before going out to run, climb, or whatever. But your real answer will come from your own experience. Just try it and see what happens. One thing I've noticed is that people on the SAD get all dizzy and light-headed if they haven't eaten anything for a few hours, and perhaps even if they didn't get some sort of meat or starch with their last meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), but with people like us, that seems to not happen. We can go 24 hours without getting light-headed or dizzy, and it's easy.
Just experiment. Take note of what you ate for dinner and how you perform the next morning without having eaten anything. Just pay attention, and your body will give you the answer. The most important thing is to simply never let yourself get prejudiced. If you find that you can't function without having eaten a big breakfast, that mightn't still be true as your diet changes... Just keep an eye out, and let your beliefs reset if they ever become obsolete.
In short, see how it pans out in your experience. Try a certain way of eating, see what happens. Try another, see what happens. And so on. Should you train BJJ in the early morning on an empty stomach? No idea, why not try?
I've trained at a couple of places in Richmond over the years.Check out TopGameBJJ with Chris Mahan,really nice people there. It usually does not turn out well when people train hard BJJ with food in their stomach.
Yeah for myself, any type of meal within 2 hours of training would be bad news. Even snacks didn't seem to help much. I make sure now I haven't eaten for at least 3-4 hours, and just take some BCAA before class (actually not too sure how effective or necessary this is, just started it), and maybe an espresso or green tea extract within an hour before class.
one time I did train while on a 24 hour fast, and I actually had really amazing energy levels for the whole class. I doubt doing that on a regular basis is a good thing, though, cortisol-wise.
