What do the Paleos have to say about the alleged oxidized cholesterol in whey protein isolate? Does it deserve to be excluded from the diet?

Insulinogenic to boot too..... – The Quilt May 1 2011 at 0:43

My concern about whey has nothing to do with the "oxidized cholesterol", there is plenty of other reasons to not eat whey.

  1. Whey is a very highly processed food.
  2. Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Mercury
  3. Quality fats should be emphasized over "lean proteins".

Totally agree.... – The Quilt May 1 2011 at 0:45
just happened to discover a jar of sealed whey and thought I'd put it to use. I will skip the whey given the evidence and create a 'file' in notepad to remind myself. Speaking of Lead: baker's chocolate? Is the verdict still out on this one(lead content?). As to Arsenic: South Surrey British Columbia water supply? ANyone...? Mercury: canned Tuna(even Yellowfin? I know Albacore has high concentrations but...). – PersonMan May 1 2011 at 0:49
Personally, I don't eat bakers chocolate, filter all my water, and don't eat processed fish. – Joshua May 1 2011 at 1:11
don't get so 'personal'l I was just looking for feedback on these issues. Arsenic: I will be living in the area on farmland and have heard it contains arsenic; canned tuna: I have a ready supply; baker's choc: likewise – PersonMan May 1 2011 at 2:15
Canned tuna might be ok, I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it if it is not a regular staple of your diet. Water can be filtered (Camelbak and others make a charcoal filtered waterbottle, I carry one with me), and baker's chocolate should be fine in moderation. – Joshua May 1 2011 at 15:06

What should I substitute my whey protein shakes with?

I've heard (from a chemist) that you can boil buttermilk for whey and it has the same bioavailable protein as store-bought minus the negatives. But...he didn't appear too healthy himself so...who's to be believed? – PersonMan May 1 2011 at 2:16
If you boil it it to ally denatured the proteins. Whey pure has to be cold processed. Master john had a post on his FB page about 6 months ago on this. I bet you could source it from his WAPF page – The Quilt May 1 2011 at 12:41
Whole food maybe? – Joshua May 1 2011 at 13:19

Coconut milk, a raw pastured egg with an extra yolk if you're feeling saucy, and a half to a full packet of Acai puree is my go-to shake. I try to eat something solid most of the time, though because my brain doesn't seem to tell me I'm full unless I'm eating something I have to chew. – Aughra Jun 12 2011 at 5:01
