I live in Oak Park and I'm looking for some paleos that might be interested in a meatshare in the Chicagoland area. That sounds way more dirty than I intended it to. Let's try this: I live close to Chicago. I want to find a group of people willing to share the price of buying a grassfed cow.

Does anyone have any suggestions for finding local meatshares? I've done some googling, but I'm not really making much progress.

Not quite Paleo, but isn't there a thriving underground butchery/charcuterie scene in Chicago? – Patrik Apr 21 2010 at 5:50
Just found it: chicagoreader.com/chicago/… – Patrik Apr 21 2010 at 5:59
Lincoln Square, where I live, has butchers that serve up grass-fed meat, along with a regular farmer's market that includes CSA box drop-offs. I'd heartily recommend [Cedar Valley Farms](cedarvalleysustainable.com/id11.html) – Aaron Griffin Apr 21 2010 at 20:51
How about that, I'm also in Oak Park and have been wondering where I can get grass fed beef. Glad to learn these answers! – Earache May 25 2010 at 17:01

I live in Chicago and was looking into buying a quarter cow...but it would be even more cost effective to split a half. The best price I've found for 100% grass fed/finished was through Meadow Haven Farms. For a 1/2 it comes out to 3.00/lb hanging weight + processing (ends up around 4.35 lb yield + processing).

@Jordan I don't have the freezer space to split a half a cow. I am more than interested in splitting a quarter cow. If you're serious, shoot me an email: paleotron at gmail dot com. – Paleotron May 26 2010 at 15:52

While "meatsharing" is sorta catchy. :) I think most people refer to it as "cowpooling". If you google "cowpooling chicago", this is one of the articles that comes up:

If a quarter is too much for you (I wouldn't have the freezer space) Arnold's Farm in Illinois sells 25 lb. beef packages. Usually their beef is corn finished, but it looks like they'll have grass finished beef available in September.

Are you still looking for people to go in on a meat-share? I am very interested. I don't have much freezer space either, so it sounds like we're looking to split a similar sized meat-share. Let me know if you're still interested, or will be interested in the coming months.

After doing a little online research of my own, these two sound like decent options:
