summer is upon us and i have my first bbq to attend in less than 2 weeks. i was mulling what to take to my gf's parents house to throw on the grill. when i was mentioning that i was thinking about doing my legendary beer can chicken or ribs marinated in horseradish mustard and beer, she exclaimed, "but i thought beer has gluten!?" yep, that girl is a keeper:). anyways, what i started thinking is that i need some new recipes to add to the repertoire since i used to love to marinate in beer and since grilling and cooking out can be paradise for us paleos/archevores, i just want to pick you guys brains for what kind of bbq recipes you have come across during your journey? looking for rubs and marinades for salmon, beef, pork, lamb or whatever may get run over on the way to the bbq.

PS i'm not just talking about grill foods but salads, slaws and the like that go well with this type of fare.

What about making the recipes with gluten-free beer? – Simibee May 3 2011 at 14:27

that's a good idea. i hope that works as well as the conventional beer. – luckybastard May 3 2011 at 14:39
I've made "beer can chicken" with soda before (Orange flavored soda was amazing for some reason). You could probably fill a can with any good liquid/marinade and it'll turn out wonderfully. 8) – Ali May 4 2011 at 12:53

akd, my dad has a smoker at his house. thanks for for reminding me of that option. it's just sitting there unused. those other recipes look amazing! – luckybastard May 3 2011 at 14:10
oh thats awesome! im dying to get a smoker. my neighbor has THREE going all the time on his porch and it makes me crazy. no cashola for the investment now, but im going to jury-rig my weber grill to smoke this summer, for sure. – being May 3 2011 at 14:22
sounds like a plan. my dad only uses it to smoke turkey for thanksgiving and christmas. it sits idle for the rest of the year. – luckybastard May 3 2011 at 14:35

Roasted Sweet potato salad

I am not good with measurements (it's just not the way I cook) so here goes:

Enough sweet potatoes to feed your guests

Paleo mayo

Dijon mustard

Hard boiled eggs (1 to every 2 sweet potatoes)

Celery

Green Onions

Summer sweet peas (schucked)

Bacon (mmm a good load of good quality bacon)

6 radishes

Cut the sweet potatoes in bite sized cubes and roat them until they are nice and done (and have those nice browned caramelized edges), fry the bacon until nice and done, pull it out of the grease and lightly toss the potatoes in the grease. Crumble the bacon (but leave the bacon crumbles nice and big. Dice radishes, chop celery, chop hard boiled eggs and throw them all in the bowl together. Throw in the schucked sweet peas, add a good whallop of the mayo and a good spoonful of the mustard - toss it all together and taste - see what you think - add mustard, salt or pepper to taste and sprinkle on top with chopped green onions and Enjoy!!!

I make one like this, but with dill & lemon juice added to the mayo. It's WONDERFUL. – sherpamelissa May 3 2011 at 18:07

My dad is a retired firefighter and he made these amazing, fall-off-the-bone baby back pork ribs last weekend...Firehouse Ribs.

I'm also a fan of crock-pot pulled pork :)

Beer is not paleo; however if you are looking for that flavor, there are several gluten-free beers available these days....at least in the US. One of them is made by Budweiser (called Red Bridge).

A good one that I have tried is "Bard's" – JakeA May 3 2011 at 17:06
I took one for the team and reviewed a few gluten-free ciders, a sorghum beer, and a sulfite-free organic red wine this past weekend ;) fitnessinanevolutionarydirection.com/2011/05/… – FED at LiveCaveman.com May 26 2011 at 22:28
