Interesting. So why do teenagers become Paleo? Was it your own initiative or do your parents happen to be Paleo? Are you rebelling against Vegetarian or Vegan parents :) ?
Hey, I'm sixteen too. I started limiting my refined sugars and cut out soda and candy when I was 13 just for the sake of being healthy. I was still, unknowingly, on the SAD though. I only recently got into nutrition right before I turned sixteen. Shortly after that I discovered the paleo lifestyle and I'm never looking back. What got me into Paleo in the first place was that I just wanted to be healthy. Even on the SAD I was still very athletic, but I suffered from low energy levels and wanted to remedy it. I think it's awesome for those of us who are still young to learn about the real truth of diet and am grateful for the people who have dedicated their time to spreading the word. My parents and those around me think otherwise. They think I'm crazy and have been brainwashed, which is like the other way around. I have also noticed the small population of young Paleo kids. However a very prominent one is Armi Legge who has done vasts amounts of research and even has his own site.
19 Here! I started Paleo almost two years ago. I just go about with saying I'm Lactose and Gluten intolerant, and it shuts most people up. Honestly, people aren't going to shove food down your throats, but I agree. Being a college student on a budget is a challenge. Whip out the crock pot out and you're in business!
I just had a midterm today in my Food Science class and one of the questions was, What should be the main component of your diet: Carbs, Protein, Fat, or Water. While the correct answer was Carbs... we all know what it should be.
Down with the SAD diet~ I hate how they're still teaching this nonsense in universities.
Both of my teens look at me like I'm crazy when I make my own meals. I always offer some - or start the core items, then split them out halfway through the cooking phase (adding cheese to teen daughter's scrambled eggs w/chicken apple sausage, for example).
But even while I've not stopped buying them their crap (ramen, mac & cheese, etc.), I'm watching as they start gravitating towards what I'm eating. The milk & cereal go untouched, while daughter wants my breakfast each morning. Teen son now requests roasted veggies with bacon (especially cauliflower, which he loves).
And I was making a quick lunch stir-fry earlier with kale, onions, peppers, splash of sake, coconut milk & leftover chuck roast - HeTeen sniffed, rolled his eyes, said 'will you ever make anything WE can eat any more?' - then stole a bite from the pan, then asked for a plate himself.
I figure the soft-pedal approach is the smart one here for now...
I didn't know there were other Paleo teenagers; I thought most sixteen-eighteen year olds took pride in eating crap food!
It seems like you're not living out your teenage years unless you eat only ramen and drink only mountain dew.
