I am going to be visiting my sis in NY soon and she lives in Brooklyn. Would like to know if anyone has any advice on the following:

-Where to shop for food -Where to eat out -Good places to do some exercise

Any great recommendations in Manhattan are also welcome.

Oh, and anywhere to get some really tasty paleo/primal chocolate :-)

Forgot to mention, if anyone knows of good farmers' markets or raw milk sources please let me know. – DXB Apr 22 2010 at 11:33
I second this; I'll be in NYC this Monday and would love recommendations. The only places that I recall from having lived there a few years ago are the PUMP Energy Foods joints in Manhattan, or Zen Palate near Union Square (in Manhattan). – tattooedchef Apr 22 2010 at 11:36

Check out my super secret beta NYC paleo map

Your in luck, because NYC has several native raw chocolate brands: Gnosis chocolate, which I usually buy at the Whole Fodos at Houston St. I like the mint flavor and it has a nice texture.

Fine & Raw, which is sold at several Brooklyn locations- this chocolate is more bitter and dark.

One Lucky Duck has a lot of extremely delicious grain-free desserts made out of nuts. Not very healthy, but if I want to indulge occasionally, I go here.

Where to get raw milk near NYC article.

Gracias on the map! – tattooedchef Apr 22 2010 at 14:55
That map is brilliant! Coincidentally I was putting my own map together for when I visit. Now I'll just use yours! – DXB Apr 24 2010 at 9:21

For workout places, just find a park with a playground and do pull-ups, push-ups, squats, sit-ups, burpees, etc, lots of options. You could also drop by a Crossfit box if you CF.

Food is pretty easy in NYC, there a lot of restaurants and you can just sub out the pasta/starches for vegetables. An overlooked type of restaurant is BBQ. I love BBQ and its a perfectly paleo food, just make sure to not use sauce. If the meat is true BBQ it shouldn't need it, the sauce actually makes it worse-tasting.

Having worked in a few BBQ joints in NYC (if I can call three "a few"), I second this emotion. I'm interested to go back to my old haunts (not Dinosaur, since we have that up here) and see if the 'cue is better or worse than I remember. – tattooedchef Apr 22 2010 at 14:56

Melissa McEwen's blog http://huntgatherlove.com/ has some New-York-City-specific tips, mostly on market locations. Check her out.

I second Fette Sau. Arguably the best bbq in NYC. – tattooedchef Apr 24 2010 at 15:33

Where does she live in Brooklyn? Grand Army Plaza near Park Slope has a farmers market every Saturday. There is a farmers market in Brooklyn Heights, but I don't know what days. There is always the farmers market in Union Square (in Manhattan). Is your sister a member of the Park Slope Food Co-op? Perlandra in Brooklyn Heights has organic and natural foods, but be prepared to pay a ton of money. Union Market also has good stuff-also very expensive. There are several chains. Trader Joes is on Atlantic and Court Street. They have some organic meats and tons of non-organic meats. Fairway in Red Hook is supposed to carry organic meats but I didn't see any on my last trip there. They are also an enormous grocery store, but avoid going on weekends. Places to eat that are decent: Romans in Fort Greene. Prime Meats (mentioned in another post) in Carroll Gardens and its brother Frankies has a steak drizzled with olive oil. The rest sadly, is mainly pasta. Flatbush Farm has sustainable meat and a garden outside. Have a great time and good luck!
