To all my fellow Paleo/Primal Backpackers, what do you guys eat/cook while on the trail?

pemmican (us wellness), hard salami (columbus cacciatore), prosciutto and hard boiled eggs (i leave them in their shells), keeps you going all day long and no need for refrigeration, though the eggs will probably only last 48 hours, everything else is good for week +. Fresh eggs can be left unrefrigerated for upwards of 5 days but, I'd be worried they'd break. I pack in herbs and spices in case we catch some fish (I'm an optimist, not a realist). We also usually bring some hard(ish) cheese. You could bring a can of nice sardines. Some good chocolate and a handful of nuts.

also sometimes potatoes and maybe a piece of fruit or two. Obviously packing out a sardine can can cause logistical problems, so i tend to make sure my trash ziploc baggie is on the outside of my pack in that case. – tartare May 4 2011 at 18:26

oh and tea bags, tea is so awesome out on the trail! – tartare May 4 2011 at 18:29

Whole Sweet Potatoes / Yams and some butter (or oil). Just slice thin and pan fry. Easy to pack and super filling. Hardest part is just finding a good surface to cut it on.

1) Beef jerky (obvious)
2) Hardboiled eggs
3) Paleo chocolate cupcakes - made from cassava flour/dextrose/eggs/coconut oil
4) Almonds, walnuts, pecans - for my peoples, because I have a slight nut allergy.
5) Dehydrated apples + dextrose = freaking awesome

You can try some home-made Larabar clones. Here is a place to start: Homemade LaraBar Recipes

Do you guys make your own pemmican?

i have tried and will try again... ok it wasn't me, it was my husband who tried to make it (but I have a bit more experience in the kitchen). It was actually pretty good but we both agreed it didn't "scratch that itch" like the US Wellness stuff. I am going to try it again. basically you make jerky, grind it up, then blend it with tallow and optionally sea salt and US Wellness uses cherries in one of their blends. They do 60% protein 40% tallow. It's the best for long camping trips, because it just doesn't need to be refrigerated. – tartare May 5 2011 at 19:24
what is it?? I have never heard of pemmican – organic one May 25 2011 at 23:19
I'm sorry, that sounds disgusting! lol! How does it actually taste? – Amanda Mar 23 2012 at 13:41
I've done it, it just tastes like oily jerky really. Be warned, it's superhard when its cold. – Dave B Mar 18 at 12:45
