I tried making toothpaste from baking soda and peroxide. Don't like it. I have been using plain old pure soap made from shea butter. I do oil pulling some times with coconut oil, but this is horrid though it produces a nice outcome. I will try plain baking soda for a bit and evaluate the outcome, however...

My inclination is to buy some tooth soap with mint. Plain old bar. Before I do, I just want to make sure there is not some negative to using soap.

My only problem with toothpaste is it foams too much, makes me gag, and I'd rather drop the glycerin. (no SLS or flouride)

Any suggestions? Whatever I order, I have to pay for shipping from the UK, since I won't get it in Italy. No point in wasting money. Also, if there is any relevance, I'd be interested in oral hygiene that takes into consideration keto-breath

thanks

I make my own tooth powder and have been using it twice daily for the last nine months: one part sea salt to three parts baking soda. Mix and keep in container. Moisten brush, dip in to powder and brush away. – ben61820 May 4 2011 at 18:54

I do something similar, but its 2 parts baking soda (aluminum free) to one part coconut oil. No complaints. – Todd May 5 2011 at 4:00
I like the idea of the coconut oil. Makes an actual paste right? I also fear that baking soda alone might be too abrasive. Good idea Todd. – Kathi May 5 2011 at 8:39
Well, if my supplier wasn't out of coconut oil, I'd have tried this already. 3 days with baking soda and my teeth feel really clean and no complaints from my finicky daughter about my breath!!! I will try your toothpaste Todd, with a bit of mint oil for good measure. – Kathi May 6 2011 at 17:37
Don't know but as far as tooth brushes I'm one month into using sonicare vibrating one. It is truly kick ass. My teeth are whither already, and it's a great gum massage. – ben61820 Dec 28 2011 at 1:00

I make a mixture with EVO Coconut Oil and Baking Soda. It has a very slight Coconut Oil taste and a neutral texture. You can make it as dry or wet as you want by adding more or less CO.

BTW - it does NOT foam.

Are you making a little batch of this that is ready to use or mixing the two each time? I am also thinking about my 5 yr old daughter here. I want to keep it simple for her. – Kathi May 5 2011 at 8:41
I make up a batch in a small bowl (a Chinese green tea cup, I think); enough to last two or three weeks (with two or three brushings a day). I start with about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of Baking Soda and add CO to get it nice and moist. If I keep it much longer, it will dry out a bit; so I put some on a toothbrush and put it under a slow running cold water tap to get it moister (I could just add another few drops of CO, too) – terrence May 6 2011 at 0:32
If I kept it in a jar with a lid, I am sure it would not dry out. – terrence May 6 2011 at 0:33
Just reading through the answers again. I have settled on coconut oil with xylitol and peppermint a tad bit of baking soda. However now seeing the EVO. Maybe that would be a good option for keeping the mixture soft as opposed to too hard. – Kathi Jan 11 2012 at 9:35

I'm a fan of ecodent tooth powder, flossing, and occasional oil pulling. I've noticed much less need for it since dropping most added sugars out of my diet.

I almost always look like I'm ready to Bite!

Ecodent is really good. I very small cavity started to heal with it. I've since switched to xyliwhite and it's stopped. :( – sarah-ann May 29 2011 at 21:44

i tried the tooth soap shreds. it foamed more than toothpaste and also caused burning that restarted every time i drank something for the next several hours, despite rinsing well. same experience with dr bronner's peppermint soap. i stick with ecodent toothpowder and oil pulling.

Doesn't sound good. Where those shreds intended for teeth? I don't get that with the shea butter soap, but that is soap I made myself, when I was experimenting last year. – Kathi May 5 2011 at 8:40

I like toothsoap, and her little book is very informative ...It's too expensive for our budget usually, so I generally use coconut oil mixed w/baking soda...you could try mixing in a few drops of peppermint essential oil(only very high quality, like Young Living Oils).

That is exactly what I have been doing. I put xylitol in it for my daughter. She loves it. I hate it. I think oil pulling is the most effective, but unfortunately I hate that as well. I am thinking about ordering tooth soap, though I am concerned about glycerin. I also use some shea soap I made a while back, but you know there is glycerin in there ???? – Kathi Jun 13 2011 at 23:04
Glycerin in toothsoap? No, she's totally against glycerin, she says it creates an artificial coating on the teeth, preventing them from healing. I don't have a package on hand right now, but I feel 99.99% sure there is no glycerin. – Rogue Nutritionist Jun 14 2011 at 3:31

What is oil pulling?

I think it means it swish around in your mouth an oil - extra virgin organic (EVO) Coconut Oil, for example. You do it for 15 to 20 minutes; so it really does clean the mouth. DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL WHEN YOU ARE DONE! – terrence May 5 2011 at 3:47
It's whitens teeth and tones the lower face, as well. Can do wonders for double chin, jowls, or turkey neck. Not to mention it supposedly draws toxins and impurities out of the system. – lunabelle May 5 2011 at 6:21
lunabelle, it tones up the lower face? Did you actually notice that yourself? I really like oil pulling and believe it has some very nealthy asepcts to it, but can't stand the gag reaction I get from the taste. If I thought I'd get esthetic results (beyond whiter teeth), I might be a little more resistant to the gagging. – Kathi May 5 2011 at 8:45
Tones your lower face because you're swishing for 30 min, tires out my jaws/cheeks. – Bristlebeard Jan 4 2012 at 10:17

I use a bar of pure 100% olive oil soap - no glycerin. I would think you could find that in Italy?! I wrote a article about what I am doing with a few months of photo results - you should check it out here. I absolutely love it!

1 drop of Dr. Bronner's soap on a toothbrush has been my fave diy toothpaste so far.

I would suggest Crest, Colgate, Sensodyne, or Aquafresh. Sensodyne does not foam terribly much, and using to much leads to most foam issues anyway.

The above work well to prevent tooth problems. I could see skipping cleaning if you really feel your diet makes it unnecessary (though I'd guess modern lifespan changes that equation....), but just trying to put together odd cleaning methods is just re-enactment type efforts.
