I hope this question makes sense!

When I first started Paleo and found Paleo Hacks, I read through a lot of questions and answers before posting.

I would report back to my newly Paleo friends at the gym that weren't really interested in researching much on their own.

I specifically remember thinking "Damn. Who eats butter straight?! Not on something? GROSS!!"

Tonight, I'm slicing of little pieces of Kerrygold as I cook and savoring every bit of it as it melts in my mouth.

And I'm actually considering the cold showier thing.... maybe.

We ran out of propane in December and had no hot water for 3 days. I passed it off as being "all paleo and sheyat". Does that count? – baconbitch May 5 2011 at 1:37
Hey bb! Are you still doing it? ;) – sherpamelissa May 5 2011 at 1:41
The cold shower thing is pretty easy if you start out hot and slowly dial it back. Just the opposite of frogs. – Scott May 5 2011 at 3:02
The cold shower is exhilarating, I recommend :) and I love me some butter! lol. Fun question... – Todd May 5 2011 at 6:38
@SM - Haven't continued them as I'm a total baby about it. However, I have a goal to do this once per week. Every spa I to to has cold water immersion and it is totally amazing. The screaming def. works :) Here's a write up Mark did marksdailyapple.com/cold-water-therapy – baconbitch May 5 2011 at 15:39

Avoiding milk.

Cold showers rule, btw. It helps to start screaming half a second before the water hits you.

I know it sounds like I'm joking, but I really do that. It works. – Forrest May 5 2011 at 0:44

My family already thinks I am out of my mind, if I start screaming in the shower they will send me to the looney bin! – sherpamelissa May 5 2011 at 1:42

I remember reading a book on my parents bookshelf called "The Primal Scream" when I was a kid. I believe it's a therapeutic technique for healing trauma? I think you're on to something there. ;) – lunabelle May 9 2011 at 4:37

I ate bugs long before going paleo. Meal worms and grubs are absolutely delicious. And I grew up on a farm where we slaughtered our own lambs, chickens, and ducks, so offal is no biggy...but I never thought I'd take a bite out of a stick of butter.

I second a lot of what's been mentioned.

I went cold showers, cold as possible which still isn't quite cold enough, and now I'll never go back to hot showers. they're great in winter as well as the latest heat wave. morning and night. I look forward to them. I don't know what's wrong with me. maybe I'm worst case scenario preparing for an ill fated Alaskan cruise.

no more soap/shampoo. cautiously experimented for a couple of weeks, and after the oily factor went away, suddenly the bizarre became normal.

oils and fats by the heaping spoonful.

no more jogging as it now seems counterproductive to my goals, which was weird to wrap my head around. now just some of the irregularities of sprints and walking.

I avoided IF for the longest time because it sounded too hardcore and I would collapse in a pile of weaksauce, but just started it the past month and loving the results. I look forward to skipping meals almost as much as meals themselves, because of the long view.

I agree. I almost crave ice cold showers now. I do mix in a hot one when I want to relax, but I genuinely like the cold now. – Todd May 5 2011 at 6:36
ive been avoiding shampoo and soap for about a year now.. 6 months in i started using soap once per week after heavy workouts. though i like the idea of cold showers, the hot showers help to clean off the built up oils on my scalp and body. excess buildup was causing dandruff and smelly hair. the hot showers clean the scalp and body enough to avoid these issues but does not strip it too much to cause other problems. – tbonesteak May 5 2011 at 16:03

I think just wrapping my head around the whole idea. Going against CW and what is "healthy", getting away from chronic cardio, loving my sleep, eating as much as I want. I honestly would prefer to go home and try new recipes than go out and drink with my friends (this is bad cause Im 28 and single, haha)

I do the same except I'll go hang out with my friends at their place and pass out if we're watching a movie or something. We usually rent because there's no sense in me spending money to pass out in the movie theater! Though somehow when we go to bars I'm more able to stay awake. – StephNY May 5 2011 at 14:05
i'm with ya man. my social life has taken a bit of a hit but i REALLY enjoy cooking up something tasty. i'll pass on the beer tower (but they were FUN) – themobiustrip May 5 2011 at 14:09

I thought the following was either crazy/wrong/impossibly untrue or some combination thereof:

no bread? preposterous. how will survive? what will I eat? now >> no bread. no problem.

sat fat? seriously? it will surely kill me quickly. now >> um, can you pass the butter please?

no juice? you're kidding. everyone knows juice is good for you. now >> no juice ever. easy.

no chronic cardio? but I thought long hours in the gym was the key. now >> strength training and high intensity.

canola oil is not good? impossible. EVERYONE knows canola is the good one, right? now >> wouldn't touch canola with a ten foot pole. coconut oil, ghee, lard, bacon fat, butter.

Eating gobs of coconut oil straight from the jar while someone watches is my fav. I did it in front of a colleague and then proclaimed "Well, I guess I've had 120% of my saturated fat RDA - OOPS!"

I do this every day, my husband caught me doing it once and stared at me like I had turned into a giant cockroach or something. It made my day! I don't even bother explaining the things I do anymore, no one in my area seems to get it anyway. – lalabomba May 5 2011 at 6:19

Finally finding a group of folks who weren't as crazy as vegans...I thought I was crazy. :-)

Agreed, I was juuuust about to tip over the edge of the vegan cliff when I found paleo. I thought, hey, that looks tastier. Never looked back. – Grace May 5 2011 at 0:56

I got nothing. Everything I first thought sounded nuts I still think sounds nuts (some of you people are just plain crazy! But you are entertaining! :) )

brushing my teeth with coconut oil. I have always been open to new things but i never thought coconut oil would be so versatile, I an obsessed with it. before paleo I never quite liked the taste of coconut either but now i crave it on a daily basis.

Wrapping my head around the concept that I didn't, in fact, need to eat tons of fruit to Be healthy even though intuitively I knew it made me hungry and tired all the time before. I don't eat any fruit save the occasional treat of organic berries anymore and I feel a lot better.

I thought it was crazy that canola oil is bad and lard is good- now I'm an expert lard render-er!

Cooking all but 1 meal per week. I used to find cooking to be ridiculously tedious but now I enjoy it and feel like I simply have no choice if I want quality ingredients.

I still think some of the exercises are crazy. Bugs are gross. Always have been. Can't wrap my head around those. And I only eat straight butter if melted, but I can't afford kerrygold or grass-fed.

I now eat butter straight as does my 8 year old and I also love liver...which I used to hate.
