So the general concensus is that fructose is bad, however, as a type 1 diabetic, I commonly use fruit to correct hypoglycemic episodes. Would I benefit from switching to pure dextrose even though pure dextrose comes from processing?

Use Glucose Tabs or Glucose Syrup. I am a follower of Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Rosedale. Dr. Bernstein is a stickler for precision. Glucose is what you need to bring your glucose in your blood up. It is the fastest. It is precise. 4 gram tabs bring my BS up 20 points. No more. Check your BS, take a tab, check it again 30 minutes later. You now know how much 4 grams will bring you up...within 5 minutes. Keep them on you at all times, in the car, in the workplace etc. Keep glucose syrup on you too. Instrucyt your loved ones how to administer the tabs and syrup in case you are unconcious. If you are high fat/moderate protein/low carb...you will not need induystrial dosages of insulin and will not suffer severe lows. Even Dr. Bernstein uses 2 tabs per day to correct. If you use fruit, rice syrup etc....there is no way to know how high you will go. No you are a dog chasing his own tail trying to get your BS back in the normal range. Plus it is too slow. Thank you Kamal for the plug. I stumbled upon this by Googling my name. |

Dextrose (simple sugar) and maltodextrin (technically a complex carb) are at the top of the glycemic index heap, although I believe maltodextrin produces a slightly higher insulin spike. But to answer your question, correcting hypoglycemic episodes is more of an endocronologist thing, perhaps. What does your doctor say? I don't really know if there is a substantial need for the absolute fastest way to get sugar into your blood for type I diabetics. There are a couple diabetics on here though, and one (Andre Chimene) I think has done some actual diabetes research. Maybe they'll chime in. One good resource for comparing powdered carbs is bodybuilding forums. Dextrose vs maltodextrin vs waxy maze vs carbs+BCAAs...they're all of interest to those looking to get super hugely jacked. |

Dextrose is just the form of glucose that can be digested (the right-handed stereoisomer). As I understand it, hypoglycemia is a lack of glucose, so dextrose would be the most directly-effective way to correct it. Don't worry about processing. Anything in a purified form is going to have some processing involved. |

Were I similarly afflicted, I would use organic rice syrup as it's probably a little less processed and likely almost as effective. If it were a severe episode I'd just use whatever's fastest, which would be dextrose. |
