Sometimes I eat neolithic junk (I don't like most neolithic/processed foods, so usually it's ice cream...I have to like it to eat it) that I KNOW isn't good for me but I tell myself it's not that bad here and there. I know it's not the end of the world, and I do eat about 80-90% (paleo)/ 10-20% and have been eating this way for over 3 years now. So what I'm asking is if you guys have any "scare me away from eating neolithic foods" sources- text, video, etc because I feel that that's the only way I'm gunna stop eating the junk (at least while my goal is fat loss). Plus, it's always good to have on hand if someone is interested in paleo. Thanks!
Read Lights, Out: Sleep, Sugar & Survival. That one will scare you!
Sugar causes poor sleep causes sugar cravings causes poor sleep causes everything from cancer to Alzheimer's to death! Read the book and take notes.
ok, seriously..if you're truly eating the 80-90% unprocessed foods and your food vice choice is a good quality ice-cream, or something akin to that it seems to me that freaking out over that little bit of "cheat" is going to age you more, suck the life out of you more and create more issues than the food will. I realize i'm not as "hard core" as some folks around here and that's ok...I applaud those that are so in tune with this whole paleo eating that they are truly happy with their food choices, but sometimes it seems a bit over done. I mean...wasn't early man also an opportunity eater? i'm sure if "he" found something yummy and could indulge once in awhile (because we know the grocery store wasn't there to provide) he would! Without a thought as to how it would affect him/her. Our problem in society today is that those opportunities are rampant and it's not a once in awhile thing..it's every day, every meal if we want it. so that's my take on it...
Listen to Dr. Stanley Lustig's lecture on fructose. Ridiculously informative, and it'll give you second, third, fourth, and fifth thoughts about things with tons of sucrose added, like most ice creams. Seriously, the evidence damning fructose is startlingly strong. You owe it to your health to watch that.
That said, ice cream is my only remaining Neolithic vice. Not even pizza phases me anymore. Fresh herbed bread at a nice French restaurant? Piss off, Pierre. But I can never turn down anyone asking me to go to Bruster's... Am I going there tomorrow? As sure as I'm not an orthorexic, I am. I graduate college in 2 days, why the hell not? :D
why dont you just make your own version of junk food?
there are some pretty decadent desserts out there using all primal ingredients that will satisfy your cravings and get rid of the guilt. Try this link: http://www.dessertstalker.com/
scroll down to the almond coconut chocolate drops, I dont even make it to dipping them in chocolate, they are awesome!!
just remember everything in moderation!!
Google search "Long term effects of diabetes." You should get references to loss of limbs and eye sight. Then tour or volunteer at the worst nursing home in your area. I work at one and its sad to see the effects of long term abuse and what it does to the body. It also upsets you to see the solutions the medical industry comes up with for these people's illness.
Not that I have anything against nursing homes or my elderly patients, but for a lot of them proper diet and exercise could have kept them independent. For some, it's not totally thier fault, they did what the Doctor told them. Then look at the billions of dollars being spent by Medicare and Medicaid to treat and care for them.
I'm currently reading "Deep Nutrition" by Cate Shanahan MD. I heard about her on the MDA forum, then listened to her interview with Sean Croxton. She leans more towards WAPF than paleo, but she has a whole chapter on why seed oils are bad for you - it scared the hell out of me! I'm just beginning the sugar chapter, and I expect it to be equally frightening. I think it's a fantastic book.
