Hello, I'm a Paleo-newbie... I would like to stay as true to the lifestyle and possible. Saying that, where does Coconut Yogurt fall into place? I found it at Whole Foods. I would like to know if this fits the Paleo diet. Thanks! Product: So Delicious Coconut Milk (Yogurt)
Do you have the ingredient list? If it has things like carageenan or other preservatives, it may not be so good. If it is just coconut and a culture, I don't think it would be bad. Check to make sure you're not getting any sugar either.
Not an answer per se... just wanted to let someone on this site know - I got this from the So Delicious Coconut Milk products today: Thank you for your email regarding our products. We will be launching a Greek Style Yogurt which will have reduced sugar in it by early June-July. There will always be a small amount of sugar in our yogurt because the non dairy based cultures we use consume tapioca dextrose which is a sugar instead of casein.

Yes. To echo what others have already said, I used to buy this stuff. It is, in fact, so delicious. But as soon as I started eating Paleo, I took a closer look at those ingredients and did not like a few components in there. If they would just leave all that crap out, I might still buy the unsweetened version.
Damn labels take the fun out of everything. I was at the local farmer's market last night and this one vendor offered me some samples of his beef jerky. I declined before I looked at the labels on his packages. Soy sauce (non-tamari) and HFCS. Can't even escape the junk at the farmer's market.
The good news is that it shouldn't be difficult to make your own coconut milk yogurt from some coconut milk and a starter culture. The culture might take some work--most starters have been selected to turn cow's milk into something delicious, so they're not adapted to coconut milk. That said, they're bacteria, they'll figure it out. I know kefir cultures will ferment just about anything, so you could try that as well.
Yeah probably not a good choice. I looked at it too but too much extra stuff in it. I keep saying I'm going to make my own but it hasn't happened just yet.
I am wondering about the sugar though. Don't the bacteria "eat" the sugar? In dairy yogurt the carb (sugar) count is actually far below what is stated on the label as it doesn't account for the bacterial action on the sugar. (GO diet theory and widely accepted in the low carb community) Would this not also be the case for the added tapioca in this fermentation process?
