Hi all. I was wondering what spices PALEOs would recommend to improve health adn wellness? My current "spice pak" entails: turmeric, paprika, oregano, ginger, cumin, allspice, cayenne and black pepper. I have heard many allusions to turmeric especially on this site. Perhaps some of these make for a Pandora's box? Most of them (from my sources) contain sulfites as a preservative also and I am wondering if this is deleterious to health in large quantities? How much should the average person consume of spices?

Buy your spices from Penzeys (penzeys.com) - they have all sorts of unique blends and they don't contain anything but the spices.

They may not last as long, but you'll be using them frequently so it doesn't really matter. The only thing to watch out for is their regular taco seasoning contains some questionable stuff. Other than that its all clean.

Oranges13: Do you know anything about sulfites and whether they are 'deleterious to health' or some such...I am currently buying spices from wholesale places for approx. $10/KG. and don't trust interent exchanges given past experience and an unwillingness to own a credit card. – PersonMan May 5 2011 at 15:11
I dont know anything about sulfites, but I know that Penzeys has a quality product. They have a catalog and you can mail order from them if you don't trust the internet. Just check out their website and get on their mailing list. You can call them if you'd prefer! :D – Oranges13 May 6 2011 at 17:29

I wouldn't worry so much about the quantity but more about the quality. If you are seeing a lot of mystery ingredients in your spices, I would look for a more quality product. There are a few sites online that you can purchase pure spices or you can find a local shop that sells them.

I have yet to encounter info. as to why sulfites are harmful/undesirable in food...this is one of the concerns which prompts my question. – PersonMan May 5 2011 at 15:12

Sulphites can trigger asthma and symptoms of anaphylactic reaction.

Thanks Dudley. Can just anyone suffer 'anaphylaxis'? – PersonMan May 5 2011 at 20:55

I second what oranges13 said about Penzey's

triple if you can get into one of their physical stores, they hve glass jars of everything so that you can sniff a sample before you buy.

i dont use spices anymore. i sometimes use yohitea blends or other teas or tea blends. they are best or pick the herbs wild from the pasture like the grassfed cow does.

i also use sometimes some raw honey, some maple sirup, some raw cacaopowder, some ashwaganda, and triphala, and also tumeric i used.. and a lot spices or herbs i not wanna say. i just look what health isuue i have right now, then i get the herb in my collection.
