Scientists say salmonella helps immune system to destroy cancer cells

Salmonella: Immune Responses and Vaccines

I've been getting my raw chicken from packs of boneless skinless breasts from Walmart. It's cheaper than beef at $1.88/lb. (vs. > $3.50/lb.), but probably not produced under the most sanitary conditions. Still haven't had any issues with salmonella or any problems.

And I've been eating raw meat nearly every day since the end of 2009. Began eating raw chicken late 2010. I get the meat on special whenever I can, which means oftentimes the meat is near expiration, yet I've never run into any issues. But the problem with those jumbo chicken breasts is that you have to trim the pieces of nasty polyunsat fat off them.

Raw ground beef, liver, chicken breasts all taste good and more juicy because they retain more of their natural content, moisture, and flavor than when you cook it. I buy lean and add in coconut oil for fatty flavor, so I never have to worry about omega-3/6 ratio.

EDIT To be fair, I want to notify the community that I only wrote this to share with all of you and have no intention of reading anyone's comments. Hope you didn't put too much thought into them.

Still haven't bothered to read anyone's comments, but guessing from the number of responses and negative votes, maybe you think I'm saying to go eat raw chicken. Wrong.

I'm just making you aware that there are people such as myself who can eat foods like raw chicken and benefit from and not fear it, even though you have to. Don't hate me for it.

Is it enjoyable for you? Or just for health reasons? – memostotle May 7 2011 at 13:16

You wrote it for the comments until they hurt your feelings. Then you edited it to save face. Bad technique. – Anonymous Coward May 8 2011 at 2:50

you're eating raw chicken, from Walmart?? dude, why the death wish??

stop it.

not "produced under the most sanitary conditions" is an understatement! They're also crammed into hen warehouses where the levels of noxious gases are so high people cannot go in there. Then their carcasses are washed with chem lab fun time mix to try to keep the salmonella at bay. To try. If the food poisoning doesn't get you, the chemicals may. Especially if you're eating this every day. If you must eat it, cook the bleeping chicken.

Matthew is right about your luck running out eventually, and with your concern about the cheapest food possible, will you be able to afford decent health care when you need it? Please consider attributing more importance to the food that you eat and eating a wider variety of better quality foods.

No.

Raw meat is my line in the sand.

As a former ServSafe instructor I can tell you eating raw meat is flirting with horrendous illness that could result in from illness, hospitalization or death.

Personally I eat Paleo for wellness not to make my self sick.

I hope that no impressionable readers decide this might be a good idea to try. Raw chicken in this country is the most dangerous hazard in any industrial kitchen, let alone a home kitchen with untrained cooks or without proper sanitation. I strongly recommend against consuming raw chicken.

Such an interesting concept, but not sure how many people will be on board with that since all the hype around salmonella in the last 30 years. (the banning the sale of the tiny turtles (at least in the US), the influx of sanitation wipes, sprays and creams, and the 100s of recalls of food items for possible tainting) I'm all for letting the body encounter germs as to build the immune system, such as not sanitizing after every little thing, or not carrying a bottle of purell anywhere you go, but I don't think I would do raw chicken, not because the fear of salmonella, but raw chicken or raw pork just don't sound appetizing at all. Raw beef or fish is about as far as I would ever go.

My husband would throw a conniption fit if I attempted to eat or feed him raw chicken. He won't even touch chicken while it's raw. It's bad enough that anytime I tenderize chicken he does a huge run through with a hot soapy sponge even though I cover my area so nothing can splash out. Good way to get him to clean the kitchen though.

I've tried it before and just didn't like the taste. I stick to raw grass fed beef/buffalo and high quality fish. If I were to try raw chicken again, I'd make sure it's a chicken that I raised and I would freeze it for a few days.

In japan raw chicken is quite common, but i assume its very high quality chicken when served, there was a great episode in "No Reservations" about this one yakitori place the chef even raised and butchered every chicken himself. Very perfectionist, i assume its as far as supermarket chicken can be ;)

Raw chicken FROM WALMART? WTF?

How are you comfortable eating raw FACTORY-FARMED meat?

(Note: Nice try with the edit, but I guarantee that you're devouring these comments. Don't try to pretend that you're not. Thanks.)

i eat raw chicken and poultry from that is natural or organic from whole foods or vitamin cottage i have read that meat frozen at a certain temp for 14 days is sufficient to kill bacteria, if i am a little worried and stuff is thawed ill rinse it and smell it, the nose knows after a while, if its suspet ill throw it in a some simmering water til the outside is cooked and its rare on the inside.......but i wouldnt publically recommend anyone doing the same :)

Well I stumbled upon this a few years ago.

I guess though if you are able to consume raw meats and raw meats that are certain sources, I dont see why it would be a problem. I dont see how you could get over the taste though.

After further digging, chowhound has a nifty user forum -like area here that asks about eating raw poultry and pork.

Also, it seems that our eastern counterparts do consume raw chicken and pork.

Hmm, after all the probiotics I eat, it couldnt be that bad to try if Im ever over there.
