KGH says that getting off the carbs is like getting off the cocaine... and I agree, any frequent use of drugs can be detrimental, like frequent high intake of carbs, although not for the same reasons !
I generally despise alcohol but I still enjoy the occasional altered state. Between business and family, it's not practical very often, but ...
Caffeine - Almost every day, sometimes several cups of coffee per day, always with heavy cream. No decaf. The best, unless I push it and suffer stomach pain as a result. French press.
Marijuana - nice in small amounts, but like alcohol, tends to lower my inhibition, screws with my diet at times (rather, my food judgment), and too much is, well, too much. I have to be highly organized during the day, and I like to pursue intellectual trades at night, so pot is rare for me. Frequent marijuana is addictive and counterproductive, mind numbing, where the only "relief" you find is when you get high...but occasional use can be quite a relief from stress without so much addictive mania.
Ketamine/Methoxetamine - Premier dissociatives...The latter, not yet scheduled, is available from internet merchants these days, although not likely to be after a few years. These are nice (if you can take it) but tend to be addictive if you don't plan ahead.
2C-T-2/2C-T-21/2C-E/2C-D/2C-I - Wonderful psychedelics, these have been available online for a decade, I tend to try a low to medium dose (see PiHKAL) twice a year, a nice 'recharge', I wouldn't use it very often as phenethylamines are rather strong.
Psilocybe mushrooms/4-ACO-DMT - Former illegal, the latter damn close to it, various tryptamines are available online, not as hard on the body as the 2C phenethylamines, like a light beer compared to phenethylamine stout...
MDA/MDMA/5-APB/6-APB/5-Methyl-MDA - The former are illegal, the latter are damn close to it, but available online, and they sure as hell beat a night of drinking, although they can be taxing the next day, much like moderate drinking, but the mental effects for most people are much better than alcohol ever dreamed of being. Not something you want to take often, but certainly beneficial.
What does this have to do with Paleo?
It seems that, in Paleo, we're searching for ways to better our minds and bodies.. Some of us just want to be healthy, lose weight, perform better, live longer, you name it. Intoxicants are certainly not a way to better yourself as a general rule, especially not for people with significant self-control problems. Anyone following a Paleo diet obviously has some level of self-control. For these people, I find some psychedelic and dissociative experiences can be profoundly helpful, a sort of like a cosmic cheat to learn things that you might not otherwise pick up in your life. Or to have profound experiences that only come to monks who meditate for 20 years. A lot is written on the profound positive effects of psychedelics and MDMA, and in fact the FDA has recently approved MDMA and Psilocin research utilizing treatment protocols designed to turn these into prescription medications. MDMA in particular is interesting to the army for PTSD. The level of PTSD is so high in returning soldiers that they are resorting to Ecstasy in the realm of psychiatric treatment.
So if alcohol isn't preferred by you, what is, and why?
i've found that mushrooms and salvia can definitely help some people who use them responsibly. helps to see another perspective sometimes...
Just from my personal experience, weed was fairly benign. I was probably a little more slow-witted than I would have been but smoking weed every day for a year didn't produce any health problems. Ecstasy too frequently definitely took its toll and I game down with bipolar disorder. Add LSD to the mix and it got even worse. Mushrooms always seemed fairly benign but I didn't do them too frequently. The cocaine and ketamine I had definitely had the potential to make me feel bad so I didn't do too much of that. Those are all of the drugs I have done. Frequency + dose toxicity - resilience = adverse reaction. I wonder what would happen if I did drugs on a very good paleo diet where my brain was well-supported. Best not to find out.
Mushrooms, pot, hashish, coke leaves, all of them belonged for thousands of years in the shamanic ceremonies of different ancient people, most of them hunter gatherers, many neolithic too. BUT the consumption of any of those substances was LIMITED and RITUAL, not open to anybody at any time, and those were humans not geared into addictive conducts. Moreover you had to be chosen and trained to become a shaman, a "medicine man" who would knew when, how, where, and why to use those substances to connect to certain mental or spiritual phenomena. So unless you are a Shamanic trained person with a definite reason to use any of them, I would NOT advise its use under any other circumstnce! you risk too much in terms of physical and mental health !
Yea I absolutely love smoking a tiny bit of herb before a workout or a run (if anyone else does this please inform me because most of my friends find it insane) as well as sometimes in the evening. We're not talking ripped out of our minds here, but just small amount. I've noticed no problems in choosing the right food. I buy well, so I eat well... and I'm captain of my college's chess team so I haven't noticed any mental side effects. still get A's and B's and receive praise at my job. Most people I meet comment on my good health. Moral is, if we do certain things that make us happy but don't necessarily hurt us, then by my definition... we're living quite well. Paleo is about eliminating the bad things in our life, not sacrificing our enjoyment of life.
Regardless of what realizations "you" come to, Truth is devoid of fragmentation, duality, and belief. All IS One. We are not Human Becomings, we ARE Human BEINGS. Just BE!
It's amazing how easy it is to acquire illicit substances. That's the biggest joke about the war on drugs. Of course it's not Paleo because all of this stuff is being produced in the modern world and our experience is a modern one. I find psilocybin fascinating though, and of course the herb has its place for some... What's interesting in a Paleo context, to my mind, are the effects that relate to cognition, language structures, etc that lead us to questions about what our world is, that lead us to a wholly different experience of our world. We live in a modern or postmodern world but that is not the world, that is just how we have made it seem in our societies but there is a vastness, an immense mystery, and that is AWEsome to encounter that. I wouldn't advocate anyone to do or not do anything potentially dangerous, but from the experiences I have had I damned if I wouldn't leap at the opportunity to ingest a pile of psilocybin containing mushrooms. It's natural but that don't mean shit, the incredible thing is the "messages" you encounter, from a mushroom? from a thing that grows on shit? If you've never experienced it, well, you just have no experience of it. Honestly it's things like eating paleo and having things like fungi that keep me from going absolutely insane in American society. Paleo to keep me on top physically and psychedelics to rejuvenate my spirit and keep my mind way farther out than the polluted mainstream conventional knowledge.
