What paleo food items do you buy from Costco? Looking for help with grocery lists. Thanks!

flag
As a side-bar, what about BJ's? I hear they have some grass-fed beef but I gather they have a smaller grocery section than Costco... And anyone shop at a Sam's Club? – patrick3000 Oct 27 2010 at 17:26

Sam's Club seems similar to Costco (at least near me). Not exactly the best. And BJ's, don't have them near me, but the name always cracks me up. – James Dec 18 2010 at 2:47

The bane of my existence, 24 oz Mauna Loa dry roasted macadamias. I can down one of those in a sitting.

+1 these are the only nuts I eat and I can't stop I limit myself to a handful a day – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:34

A sitting? I don't even make it to sitting position before they're gone. That's why I had to stop with the nuts. – patrick3000 Oct 27 2010 at 16:56

Same here, I almost as bad as potato chips. Scarf scarf scarf... – James Dec 18 2010 at 2:48
Believe it or not, the Macadamian nuts in my city are cheaper per pound at Whole Foods than Costco! (Plus the ones from whole foods are raw and unsalted). – Senneth Apr 6 2011 at 15:41
unfortunately they seem to have stopped selling these at my costco and (according to the internet) many others as well. – rafi Nov 6 2011 at 15:15

My last few hauls have included:

  • Fletcher's dry-cured bacon. (Yes, it's factory farmed, but it's extremely tasty.)
  • Zico coconut water
  • Frozen wild-caught mahi mahi.
  • Tinned sardines in olive oil.
  • Canned wild-caught salmon.
  • Pickled herring.
  • Dried cherries.
  • Mediterranean Tapenade (artichokes, olives, tomatoes, capers, red peppers, garlic, oregano in olive oil).
  • Roasted red peppers in a jar.
  • Lärabars.
  • Chicken stock.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Raw oysters.
  • Canned clams.

I used to buy all my meat and produce at Costco but not any more. The one I go to in NH does not sell grass-farmed beef nor any other naturally-raised critter products and rarely has organic produce. I think I'm not going to renew it this year. Of course for not-food things they're great but I don't buy much "stuff" aside from cheap clothing I've needed lately because all my old stuff is ginormous.

What annoys me about them is reading that someone is getting grass-farmed ground beef there, but the stores seem to vary pretty widely in their offerings. THe NH store had the ground beef for maybe two months then stopped selling it.

It's also vexing that they sell frozen lobster imported from Brazil, yet Maine's finest are maybe an hour away. Most of the fish is farmed, all the frozen shrimp are farmed too. Blech. No thanks, trying to cut down on the parasites, feces, antibiotics and heavy-metals.

Maybe I should go to one closer to Boston, probably more of a demand for it there.

Oh, and I just chewed a piece of broken glass in the grass-farmed ground beef I got from Whole Foods... nice job there guys. I split my meat & produce Between them, Trader Joes (lots of wild seafood, hit or miss on grass-farmed cow) and online sources of frozen stuff.

Yeah, I let my Costco membership expire. I feel like I'd have to buy/eat a ton of boxed and packaged crap to make it worthwhile. – Casey Apr 5 2011 at 15:52

Yeah, they definitely don't have all that at mine. I'll keep my eyes open though! – Marisa Jul 3 2010 at 21:42
def not mine in southern cali. I would kill for local bulk grass-fed beef! – henrydrn Jan 29 2011 at 22:27
Not local, it's from NEw Zealand. Still better than grained local tho. – Stephen-Aegis Jan 30 2011 at 4:34

Wild caught salmon and fish, fruit, veggies, eggs, almond butter, whole organic chicken. Does Costco carry decent fish oil? I will definitely check out the Larabars

Last time I checked, they did NOT have a decent fish oil. In addition, there was some discussion if they were adding "other" oils to the fish oil pills. I think Robb Wolf covered this in a podcast. – jm054 Apr 25 2010 at 22:54
I am referring to the Costco brand fish oil in the above post. – jm054 Apr 25 2010 at 22:55
Robb actually said Kirkland Brands Fish Oil was legit however recently they have changed their labeling. That is where the possibility is that they "could" be being clever and adding other type fish oils in. – nathan Apr 25 2010 at 23:59
They have a wild salmon oil now that I use, good EPA/dha ratio – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:32
I agree, I think the Kirkland's Fish Oil is questionable now. The wild salmon oil sounds interesting, but I haven't looked at the ingredients. – James Dec 18 2010 at 2:48

What I typically buy from Costco:

  • Diced chicken breast
  • Rotisserie chicken (whole)
  • Chicken thighs
  • Steaks
  • Bananas
  • Bulk Walnuts
  • Heavy cream carton
  • Rice/tomato grape leave wraps
  • Frozen stir-fry veggie mix

The stir fry veggie mix is another of my convenient favorites – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:35

their wild caught fish is seasonal, though i haven't seen the wild caught salmon in a while. we've been using the wild caught cod instead. definitely can't control ourselves with the macadamia nuts. otherwise: berries, salad greens, kerrygold butter, occasional bulk nuts, magnesium, fish oil, cheese, wine, and flowers :)

Also wanted to mention the Verde Farms grass-fed ground beef and the european-style butter. Both much more affordable there than elsewhere.

All beef is grass fed. None of it at costco is grass finished. Sneaky. – SunDog Nov 21 2011 at 7:22
How can we find that out for sure SunDog? – PlantGirl Aug 27 at 17:11

Organic spinach
Mini sweet peppers
5 pack of avocados
Box of tomatoes
Feta cheese
Sun-dried tomatoes
Kalamata olives
Nuts
Berries when they're not too expensive

I recently purchased grass-fed bison steaks from Costco. Deliscious!!!! Also got some wild-caught sole, organic chicken fed vegetarian diet (but not sure if pastured). It's apple season and I got some deliscious organic Fugi apples.

No you didn't. Did you? I mean, is it really true Costco has "grass-fed" anything and "wild-caught" anything? If so, decent prices? If so, I'm headed there soon. Yep, I'm a member, and yep, I sort of assumed I couldn't find anything truly healthful there. Happy to be wrong on that score... – Dorado Galore Nov 6 2011 at 3:32

Just renewed my long-dormant Costco membership on the rumor here of finding grass-fed beef. Sadly, that turned out to be mere rumor - but I did get the following:

  • 1 carton heavy cream
  • omega-3 free range brown eggs
  • aidell's chicken-apple sausage (easy quick breakfast for me most days)
  • the fletcher's bacon someone else referenced above
  • organic spinach-
  • bag of avocados-
  • 10 lb bag of local-ish sweet onions from Hermiston (I'm in
    Oregon)
  • jumbo-sized contact lens solution

On a side note, I will NEVER EVER go again on a Saturday afternoon.

Meat, nuts, Larabars, fruit, veggies, mango nectar (with no added sugar), eggs, seasonings

Aren't larabars just insulin bombs? I crash from heavy sugars in one sitting like that, even after heavy sprinting like ultimate frisbee – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:33
Does yours carry good O3 eggs? I can only find 100mg O3 eggs I go out of my way to Kroger for 660mg O3 Christopher eggs – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:38

organic mixed berries, organic chicken, marnatha almond butter. Didn't know they carried wild caught fish--awsome!

You have to read carefully, MOST of the fish is farmed – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:36

I actually get a pretty good fish oil from my Costco. It's a total EPA/DHA is 900mg, so I take eight of them a day split between two meals. Granted, there are some bad ones, but this one that I get comes with 150 capsules. What fish oil do people have at their Costco that they do not consider good?

The Kirkland's brand 1000mg pills. They don't list out the EPA/DHA distribution on it, other than a total (300mg). So you've got a 1000mg pill of which 70% is NOT EPA/DHA, and of that 300mg, you don't know how much of each is in there... – James Dec 18 2010 at 2:51
To add on, comparing to my Carlson fish oil. In a 1600mg serving, 800mg EPA, 500mg DPA, 300mg Other Omega 3's. So more EPA/DHA than "other". – James Dec 18 2010 at 2:53

I have started shopping at Costco much less after coming back to Paleo. I do still get walnuts and their avocados are excellent but I now buy from local farms for meat and eggs and simply eat less vegetables and almost zero fruit.

I believe their walnuts are processed on equipment that touches wheat. – Caveman formally known as Dan Nov 6 2011 at 0:09

organic ground beef, omega-3 eggs, fishoil, raw nuts, wild blueberries, wild salmon, salad mix, organic coffee, green tea, when you have no time and dont mind conventional chicken their rotisserie chickens for 5$ are good. overall dissapointed in thier selection of things though. no dark choc worth buying and no coconut milk or organic heavy cream!

just made a new paleo (plus salt and dairy) find at costco: ready-made chicken korma.

it is more than just a bit salty but pretty good for a fast, easy cheap meal. i just nuked the $9 container and served it with cooked veggies to my family of four. the kids had some trader joe's rice and naan too. it was more than enough.

the ingredient list is pleasantly grain and additive/fake stuff free - caramel color aside.

ingredients: chicken tenders, heavy whipping cream, organic coconut milk, onion, tomato paste, garlic, butter, water, salt, ginger puree, kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves), caramel color, cumin, seasoning(coriander, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, bay), cayenne pepper, white pepper, cardamom, black pepper, coriander, turmeric.

Yes, I've had that. It's tasty. – speno Dec 19 2010 at 0:40

best find for us out west: canned wild caught salmon - 3 cans for $9.99. I use all three cans to feed my family of four (big eaters) by making salmon cakes with coconut flour. Great quick dinner and good cheaper whole food way to get omega 3's into us. Fresh wild caught Alaskan salmon for us is $30 a pound or more here in Oregon.

I also buy the raw almonds and soak/dehydrate them, make flour out of that or just eat as snacks. But I'm not eating many nuts right now until I get closer to goal weight. Hence not buying the ADDICTIVE macadamias!!

I'll have to check out the Larabars. I use these for emergencies only, but they are a lifesaver when I need them. I stay away from the varieties with chocolate in them as they're higher carb. The cashew one only has 20 carbs in it.

Ours sell's huge packages of gluten free new your style sausage that is phenomenal
http://newyorkstylesausage.com/ They also sell organic ghee by the gallon I've also found a bunch of other stuff but you have to spend time looking for it.

I love Costco lawnchairs. Yummy. No appreciable insulin effect. Yahoo.

The Costco in Harlem in NYC has a lot of organic ground beef and chicken bundles (individually wrapped but in bundles of 3 1lb packs) but it doesn't say that is grassfed, so I prefer to stick to grassfed brands. However, there has been a huge increase in organic produce lately.

I've never seen the Larabars. What are they near?

The are usually in the same area as snacks, chips, protein bars and the like. At my location, they only have 3 flavors. Not the best flavors, but still tasty. – jm054 Apr 26 2010 at 3:13

Those things are full of sugar... – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Apr 26 2010 at 12:55
Added sugar or the natural sugars from the fruit? – jm054 Apr 26 2010 at 14:06
the first ingredient is dates, so they are sugary from that. They don't contain any added sugars, they are really just smashed up fruit and nuts with some spices or cocoa added. – Nicole Apr 26 2010 at 23:37
The one's that come in the bulk package are the worst flavors ever, I think they have a deal to get rid of the cheapest ones to make that are also the worse tasting. Blech! – Senneth Apr 6 2011 at 15:47

Costco's one of the few places I've found that sells a few cuts of USDA Prime beef, the kind that restaurants use and typically unavailable in supermarkets. Granted, it's not grassfed, but it's very meaty, marbly, and tender. You definitely taste the difference. You have to buy a half-dozen New York Strips at a time, so freeze a few!

My understanding of grainfed is that the fatty ones have the most O6 – Stephen-Aegis Jun 6 2010 at 1:11
My understanding of beef is there's hardly any PUFA anyway. Of the relatively small amount of PUFA, it's mostly O6 but as far as total fat, it's mostly saturated. – Fred B Oct 24 2010 at 0:05

Costco lamb is yummy! It is imported from Australia and I believe it is grassfed.

Just remember, most of their stuff isnt organic, often irradiated, and not grass-fed. So its not 100% paleo for the purists, but good enough for the novice and intermediates

Verde farms ground beef is organic and grass fed and the NZ lamb is grass fed – Stephen-Aegis Jun 5 2010 at 21:35
Unfortuantely, Verde Farms doesn't supply them out west... – ChrisG Jun 7 2010 at 18:53
