I have heard mixed reports about colon/parasite/liver cleansing and the like; some say it is hugely beneficial, others say a fraud, down right dangerous and waste of time.
Does the paleo diet (meat/fat) alone provide all the 'inner maintenance' the body needs or is there any evidence that hunter/gathering people internally cleansed their bodies in addition to their diets? If so, how can we replicate this cleanse safely and efficiently with substances readily at our disposal?
Well we know they didn't use maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne- since those things didn't exist. They probably used clay or laxative plants like sorrel or purslane for that purpose. According to Wild Health, even animals do this.
What you don't want to do with completely shed your intestinal lining- which is that those "parasites" people doing nasty commercial cleanses see in the toliet.
waste of time. Since paleo- I am about 65-35 meat-veggies- and no grains or supplement fiber I have no problem taken a dump everyday. I do eat apples in season, no citrus and some seasonal berries all on a very limited amount since I'm a diabetic. My colon is fine. I do drink some amounts of Raw Milk- one qt every fours days and real greek yogurt for protein on lift days.
btw- since drinking the raw milk- I feel fantastic and added to a strength program- my muscles have grown, which helps keep glucose out of my blood.
more info from a conventional bent here Gutsense.org Basically all the big scary things that happen if you have too much fiber/ bad gut flora and eating habits, and how to tell if your stool is alright.
Another thing to think of for why too much/straight fiber does what it does, It basically works like sandpaper on your intestinal lining, damaging the cells, the damage cells create mucus to try and protect/repair themselves.. leading to more moisture/mucus in your stool which makes you get it out easier short term.
This is the exact same mechanism as why smoke particles cause more mucus and risk of lung cancer in smokers from what I understand.
The paleo diet does a great job of repairing the gut that has been damaged due to eating all the grains and sugars. I'm pretty sure both Robb Wolf, at www.robbwolf.com, and Mark Sisson, at www.marksdailyapple.com, have talked about this. I forget exactly what they say on the subject, but you could search around for it. However, I do know that both of them say that Intermitent Fasting is a great way to "cleanse your body," in the way that you are giving your body a break from food so it has time to get rid of toxins and whatnot. I know I'm not giving you an exact answser, but I know for a fact that it is on their websites, so go check it out.
