Is it any good? In a pinch?

I've been using it but I'm not sure how to judge if it's good or not.. – Henny May 11 2011 at 23:43
usually biting into the capsule is a good way. if it tastes bad, its probably not good. I've tested other brands, which I prefer. But I was out and TJ's was cheap so I wanted to put some feelers out there. I guess you usually get what you pay for. – Bethany May 12 2011 at 17:48

No, i don't use fish oil. I avoid it because I think it's more important to keep O6 low and get O3 from natural sources. I'm a bit concerned about oxidation, and most studies haven't shown a positive benefit from fish oil supplementation (Different from just increasing O3's).

no positive benefit? in what sense? I wrote my thesis on omega 3s and there is overwhelming evidence that they are beneficial for certain things. – Bethany May 12 2011 at 17:49
It looks like normalization of 3/6 ratio and decreasing 6 is more important than popping rancid fish oil. In a good diet, I highly doubt fish oil will have a positive effect. Paul Jaminet has some interesting posts on it. – mari May 13 2011 at 0:17
@Bethany short term benefits. Long term studies are largely inconclusive showing possible detrimental "side" effect. – No more. Sep 1 2011 at 19:51
Mari has a valid point...if you are eating a rock solid diet you don't really need fish oil. And if your diet is less than ideal, you don't need much, in which case I would buy the highest quality possible. I don't think TJs can compete on quality. – Tim Oct 28 2011 at 0:19

It has soy in it as do most fish oil capsules. I stick with carlsons liquid fish oil as it is soy free and if you order it from vitacost it is the same price per dose as TJs.

Their salmon oil has no soy in it. Just glycerin and gelatin (for the capsule). – RG73 May 26 2011 at 4:05
I bought Carlson's D3 caplets and they contain Sorbitol (!!!!) I think I'd rather stick with Trader Joe's and their soy. – Henny Sep 1 2011 at 23:25

I have a bottle of Carlson's in the fridge at home, but I do keep a bottle of TJs in my desk at work. I pop a couple when I eat cafeteria food for lunch. Not sure about the quality, sorry :(

Probs not the best, not the worst either. Sam's Club and Costco are good choices because they move through the stock like no one's business. That means it's pretty darn fresh. Carlson's is a great choice and you can get it for pretty cheap through VitaCost. Once you have it, refrigeration is a good idea if possible.

Personally, I think refrigeration for fish oil is a must, unless you gulp it down like no tomorrow... – James Oct 13 2011 at 22:47

Yes, it's OK generally.
