i have been consuming a diet free of sugar, dairy, grain and legumes for eight weeks. six weeks in i was feeling very run down. i posted here and got many helpful suggestions which i incorporated into my eating; specifically less carbs by reducing fruits and less green tea/more water.
one week later i got the flu. i haven't been ill like this in a decade. i still feel fatigued, so its time to look elsewhere for the problem.
i wonder if its the eggs. i used to eat one a day, but i find i add them to many other meals bringing my consumption up to three a day. could my symptoms be caused by eggs?

I read a comment from Dr. Eades on this kind of situation (don't have time to find the link). He suggested potassium might be the issue. Updated: Okay, here's the post. In response to a comment, he writes: "Being in chronic ketosis does not necessarily make one tired. Usually tiredness in the face of ketosis comes from a potassium deficiency. People go into ketosis because they are cutting carbs, cutting carbs reduces insulin levels, reduced insulin levels encourage the kidneys to get rid of excess fluid. As this excess fluid leaves the body it carries potassium along with it, often causing a potassium deficiency. Replacing the potassium usually solves the problem." |

i wouldn't think eggs are making you feel run down per se, though some (me included) don't digest eggs well. Approx how long have you been clean, strict paleo? Approx how many grams of carbohydrate are you currently eating? If its in the less-than-50 grams/day range I'd say try adding some starch calories in and see how you feel. For me, eating only animal products and nonstarchy veg just does not lead to optimal athletic performance OR a good positive mental outlook. I have found that by adding in starch from sweet potatoes and occasional white rice give me just those two things: more pep and a brighter mental/emotional state. if you are metabolically healthy and not diabetic then perhaps add starch as I mention above and see if you don't feel a bit better. If it doesn't work then thats that, but im betting it will have you smiling again in no time. |

I experienced this same exact feeling a couple of weeks ago. I posted it here but I'll say it again. I ate at a taqueria and had some beans. I thought those could be the problem and someone suggested it could be the oil or the msg. You may want to check that out. On anther note: I am a huge egg eater. 2-3 per day. Over the past few days I've experienced a dull ache and bloating in my tummy along with a sleepy feeling a few hours later. I ate the same meal everyday to control the experiment. I checked on here about the egg issue and see a few posters experienced the same problem. I recall that I didn't have this problem when I didn't eat eggs for 2 days last week. I took out eggs beginning today and I haven't had the issue. Granted the day isn't over but by now (2 hours after my meal) I'm not experiencing the pain. After I finish the egg experiment, I'm going to try eating within my eating window (from 11 am to 7 pm - I IF) but 3 or 4 smaller meals. I currently eat 2 big meals. After that, I'm going to up my caloric intake. At the moment, I document only about 1000-1200 calories. I work out daily and not to exhaustion (trying to control for cortisol issues). Keep in mind I'm very small 5'1" @ 108 lbs so I don't require a lot of calories. Anyway, hope these three experiments may help you. I find they've helped me introduce/take out a lot of paleo foods that just didn't work well with my body. |

are you saying you got the actual flu, or the "low carb flu"? |

My mother got very lethargic on strict paleo (3 days). We pulled her diet apart, turns out she was eating maybe 700 calories/day while working hard in garden. She was also eating no starches, no fruits. I'd recommend running your diet through Fitday (free) and see if your calories or carbs are too low. In order of harmlessness first try eating more non-carbs, then if that doesn't help try eating more carbs (fruits, starches - no glutens, no sugars). |

Did you follow Dr K's suggestion of using 5HTP til low carb flu symptoms abated? One thing that was not mentioned in the other thread was the fact that supplementation with Vit D3 boosts the immune system by activating the killer T cells that go out and kill invading bacteria and viruses. Dr K wants his patients to have 70-100ng/mL serum Vit D3. Most everyone is deficient in D3 Edit Re: Pricy Pills. I get my Now Brand Vit D3 from http://www.swansonvitamins.com/NWF391/ItemDetail?n=0 less than five cents per day US. I use Now Brands 5000IU per gelcap one a day and have for 3 years and have not had one bout with cold or flu in that time. Eggs are not your problem. You still have not converted your enzymes over from a carb burner to a fat burner/ It just takes time. Review more on low carb flu here: http://lowcarb4u.blogspot.com/2010/02/induction-flu.html I eat 2 dozen a week all fried in coconut oil with no problem. Each tablespoon of coconut oil contains 117 cal and I use about 5 a day. And its 59% saturated fat. You hang in there and you will like the results of paleo. |

I would get some blood work done, a standard blood test to see if there are any imbalances going on. Iron is a biggie, even if one eats red meat there are other factors that can bring one's levels down (like taking too many NSAIDS, which cause internal bleeding). Also, as someone else mentioned, a potassium imbalance can also cause fatigue/weakness. |
