After seeing a lot of comments saying that grass-fed meat is better, I just want to clarify a few points.

  • Given that New Zealand is pretty much a dairy-culture society, would it be safe to assume that most meat available here is grass-fed?
  • I remember seeing a lot of fuss in the papers & news etc in 2010 about some Chinese farming company wanting to setup a huge 'factory' style farm in our South Island; I'm guessing that would be the grain-fed that is common in the USA as well?
  • How do I find out for certain what diet my meat had while it was alive?

Cows are questionable, but all our lamb is pretty much grass fed - it's cheaper to do so! This kiwi subsists on lots of fatty lamb and wild caught fish - terakihi, snapper etc.

An article on the feeding of palm kernel to cows - http://paleozonenutrition.wordpress.com/2010/10/02/new-zealand-cows-fed-palm-kernel-expeller-producing-a-new-type-of-trans-fat-is-it-safe/

The standard stuff we get in the supermarkets is grass fed, but might be 'grain finished' in that for the last couple of months grain is used for fattening. From what I've read, grain finished is a bit exotic for here, and is more expensive!

Contact a farmer. Most grass-fed lamb I see in the U.S. Grocery stores in Atkins ranch from NZ.
