I have been eating Paleo since February and have been relatively consistent. Recently I have increased my exercise and noticed that my sweat no longer tastes salty. And if it, does only slightly. Has anyone else experienced this? I have greatly increased my consumption of bacon so I find this surprising because i have not been choosing the low sodium variety.

Could this change in my sweat be attributed to the fact that overall I am eating little to no other processed foods so my overall sodium intake is less? I am also thinking that with my switch to a Paleo way of eating it could be the fact that 90% of my liquid intake is now just good ole refreshing water. So I was just curious if anyone else experienced this once they switched from a SAD diet to Paleo?

Inette,

This is probably a matter of normal heat acclimation due to increased exercise, and unrelated to diet.

When you increase your exercise or are exposed to a warm environment, your body compensates by reducing the concentration of sodium and other minerals in your sweat, so your sweat will taste less salty.

Heat acclimation takes time--7 to 10 days, and your body will lose heat acclimation if you stop exercising or aren't exposed to heat for 1 to 3 weeks.

Of note is that people with cystic fibrosis lack the ability to reduce the salt content of their sweat due to a defect in their cellular membrane chloride channels. This can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels). Some parents have actually diagnosed their child's cystic fibrosis by tasting the saltiness of their sweat.

This is true. Also likely true, your body is likely going into salt protection mode because you aren't eating enough damn salt. Salt isn't villainous. Enjoy yourself a little and eat some salt. – No more. May 29 2011 at 19:14

Basically it just means you have low electrolyte/mineral/salt levels.Which also means your body will be less efficient at absorbing water and leads to dehydration. Dehydration makes your metabolism less efficient, and impedes fat burning. It also leads to muscle cramps, headaches and dizziness. without sufficient sodium and potassium your body can't maintain your blood pressure, thus dizziness. So If you want to do a lot of cardio or you do cardio in hot environments make sure to replenish your electrolytes during the training.

Table salt or special salts are bad for this. Its better to use sea salt or better yet rock salt. As they are a mix of sodium-chloride potassium-chloride and iodine-chloride salts to name but a few and your body needs them all. In fact if your doing very intensive training you should invest in a mineral complex geared towards replenishing the lost minerals, these normally also include magnesium which is also very important to prevent cramps.

Also note the mineral drinks in most fitness studios aren't actually geared to replenish your lost minerals.

Consider this, EU RDA sodium is 1.5g US RDA sodium is 2.3g We can sweat up .9/1.9g sodium per litre sweat We can sweat up to 3 litres of water an hour. So in 1 hour you could sweat up to 5 times your daily sodium allowance So you should try to tie your salt uptake not to your food but to your water consumption. – dethrophes Mar 24 2012 at 17:30
Further more when you feel tired and weak, eat something and feel beter afterwards, its probably not the carbs that make you feel Beyer but the salt. – dethrophes Mar 24 2012 at 17:32

I actually noticed the same thing last night at the gym when sweat ran down into the corners of my mouth, tasted like regular water. Don't know the cause of it, but definitely less icky!

Yes! Definitely less icky. When I was working out I realized I forgot to bring a towel with me and when I felt the sweat rolling towards my mouth and couldn't stop it I was anticipating the yucky salty taste. I was pleasantly surprised when it just tasted like water. – Inette May 15 2011 at 18:05
