Don't get me wrong; I'm a huge coffee fan. But it seems that time and time again, we hear about the awesome health benefits of drinking coffee, such as this:

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/ProstateCancer/cups-java-day-cancer/story?id=13624057

The studies always seem to promote relatively heavy coffee drinking (multiple cups per day). Personally, I am having a hard time accepting that a beverage with such a potent drug can be so good for health in the long run, let alone in large doses. Sure, they often throw in the blood pressure disclaimer, but still.

Any thoughts?

its my personal opinion that anything in excessive amounts is bad and moderation is the key to health. – lalabomba May 17 2011 at 23:41

People like good news about their bad habits. Coffee is hilarious.

To anybody here who drinks it, why exactly do you? Just wondering. Maybe you could change my mind.

because it always smells better than it tastes, but when the constellations align and the weather is just perfectly right with appropriate humidity, good coffee really does taste as good as it smells, and i am in constant vain search for that ideal. – tartare May 18 2011 at 4:04

This posting by Dr T at Nephropal: At first I was not sure of any benefits because I did not understand the nomenclature. But appears to lower inflammation and assists the lipid panel. But after reading the comments of some folks that I know know their stuff, yes coffee at four cups or less does assist the body...how I am not quite sure...but I'll go with the comments. http://nephropal.blogspot.com/2010/04/coffee-and-inflammation.html#comments

Here is another Nephropal on coffee and cacao with comments also.

Oh, PLEASE give me a reason to pick my coffee cup back up. I'm currently convinced that coffee is evil because of

A. it raises cortisol...leading to tummy blubber

and

B. it causes short term memory loss, and my short term memory has enough issues that I went off coffee along with trying this Paleo thing in hopes of getting my brain back.

all this I got from some blog

I think the real problem with coffee is that it tastes so awful that most people add so much garbage to it, and the added garbage is the real problem. Do you really think these studies are only covering people who drink black coffee all the time?

You all are so smart. Tell me the good outweighs the bad, especially if coconut milk can be my only garbage additive. (I could live with that, right??)

Coffee... a nice way to push yourself into adrenal fatigue on a low-carb diet that's already got you walking down that slippery slope. – Grok May 18 2011 at 8:29
