So sort of following on the heels of the question from yesterday regarding horrible things that you ate once upon a time, I got to thinking about what I eat as a treat now - you know when you want to celebrate, or unwind from a crazy hectic day - or just want to treat yourself.
What is something that you eat as a treat now - or classify as a treat or dessert?
I think a big one for me is pork rinds (I don't make my own, so they are a bit processed - but they are super delicious). And on Sunday morning I add some 'paleo-ish' home-made irish cream to my coffee (coconut milk, whiskey, organic almond extract, organic vanilla and espresso shaken in a bottle and kept in the fridge)
dark chocolate with chile powder. marscapone with blueberries. whipped cream with a touch of stevia. honey in 10% milkfat greek yogurt. goat cheese.
for a real down-and-dirty cheat ill have gluten free ice cream or flour-less chocolate cake with chipotle powder.
Two words: Macadamia butter.
Of course, there's also cashew macadamia butter if you're willing to do cashews as a cheat. So good you should have to show a driver's license to purchase it.
Lindt 85% or higher, or Green & Black's 85% (my preferred) for chocolate.
Macadmia oil + balsamic vinegar + cocoa powder, add fresh blueberries, toss to coat, top with walnuts.
Bacon in Vosges dark chocolate. No I am NOT kidding. It is superbly, indescribably delicious. My sister-in-law gave me one at Christmastime - I think she bought it at World Market.
Five double processed white flour doughnuts deep fried in soy oil topped with an extra sweet simulated chocolate glaze. All washed down with a liter of coke.
Melt 85% upwards dark chocolate, mix it with crushed nut of choice and a slab of grass fed butter, leave in the fridge to set. Eat. Oh.....my......goodness. You can also mix the melted chocolate with heavy cream for a truffley texture and/or mix in desicated coconut instead of nuts. Seriously seriously good.
My normal treat is 2 squares of 80+ dark chocolate. I buy whatever they have at whatever grocery store I'm at. I have had Lindt, Ghiradelli, Green & Black, Godiva. They are all good.
All my Paleo buddies have been doing a Whole 30, so I have not made any Paleo baked goods in awhile. But I do make Pumpkin Almond Butter Bars, Almost Paleo Brownies, Macadamia Nut Cookies, Banana Bread, Almond Muffins... when I have someone to share them with. I have them with my tea after dinner on nights I don't have chocolate.
I don't consider any kind of fruit a "treat". I usually have one serving of fruit a day. Which fruit I choose depends on how many other carbs I have that day. I try to stay under 75 carbs, so if I'm having a sweet potato at dinner, I'll have a lower carb fruit. If I'm having zucchini with dinner, I can have a high carb fruit.
For me, it's a balancing act of staying at the ratios that I have determined are best for me. I think for some that ruins all the "fun", but I love planning everything and coming out with exactly the right combos.
