i wear gloves to lessen the pressure point pain i get on the pads of my palm when i lift heavier weights. i also wear them for a cardio class that involves simulated punches so that i don't dig my fingernails into my palms when i make a fist.

I do not use gloves. I use chalk on my bare hands.

I imagine people use gloves for two reasons:

1) so they don't develop calluses

2) so they don't slip when they get sweaty (which is why I use chalk).

If your Paleo you must make your own gloves from the hide of an animal you have killed with your own blade.

Would not be caught dead in a pair of those gloves. Only reason you should wear them is if you desire to be dainty and don't want to get a run in your panty hose.

I have calluses, big time. My hands are rough and although it is not attractive for a woman to have rough hands, it reminds me of how hard I train. I tend to rip once a week...as will be the case tonight after the WOD.

I do chalk up on a regular basis though. It helps with the slipperiness on the bars.

I notice it too at my globo gym..the women wear them to avoid calluses i'm sure. The men, in general, I would say dont know why they wear them. For the same reason they dont know why they wear a weight belt when doing bicep curls..the reason is they have no clue what they are doing.

I wear gloves for lots of things (mountain bike, motorcycle, kart racing, hunting, etc) but not for lifting weights though. I want tough hands and a strong grip.

In the gym, they serve two purposes. One, you know those two or three calluses one gets right behind the two middle fingers, and in some of us the pinkie finger too? It prevents those. Two...it just looks cool. Meh, neither of those are important to me so I don't use them. My wife did for a while until it started interfering with her grip on the dead lift...so now she wears her lifters calluses with pride. :)

I know a dude who wears them because his hands hurt. He seems to think he's reached some sort of painful level of training I just don't know about yet. Hipster sissy...

I like my calluses, as others have said.

Bloody hands are slippery hands. As are sweaty hands.

This is obviously only slippery on the skin, so a glove would give you grip when things get messy.

PS: I don't wear gloves by the way, just chalk and sometimes, when my hands are already messed up, the gymnastic leathers (not really a glove)

Once you have been training with weight for some time you WILL develop calluses where your fingers meet your palms and also it does allow for list skin friction against the grip of barbell/dumbell. Not to mentioned better grip which can be an issue as the weight you are working with increases. Some of your more advanced goves have wrist supports built in as well.

And then there are those that just wear them because they THINK they look cool I guess. They do help with the calluses though, I do know that from personal experience. Nike's brand are extremely well made and durable with out being at all bulky.

I used newgrips- http://www.newgrip.com/ for a while, since all of my workouts are basically weighted pullups on metal bars, which will destroy your hands over time. They're just neoprene, and worked awesome until I shredded through them. Never got around to ordering a second pair since my home pull up bar is padded...though the neoprene pads are ripping through, might be time for a new pair! Great thing about them is their open design, fingers don't get nearly as sweaty vs gloves!

Boyfriend was ripping a lot of calluses and got a pair of gymnast grips from Again Faster- he's able to bang out more pullups and is quite pleased! I just use chalk when it's available; if my hands start getting too manly, I may switch to the grips too.

I changed my grip on pullups to use my fingers rather than my whole hand and haven't had a callus in years. With weights, if I get a callus I just file it down so there's nothing to grab and tear it off.

Don't use gloves to lift weights, get gym chalk. Weights put distance between your hand and the weight and will make it harder to lift, put unnecessary strain on your wrists, and leave you with a weak grip. Chalk prevents callouses while giving you all of the benefits.

I use big back grips instead of lifting gloves. Basically squares of rubber-like-stuff that really help improve my grip strength because I have next to no grip; I can barely do assisted pullups without the grips!

I use gloves when I lift with the trap bar. I bought them because my grip was really sucking when I started. I felt on many occasions that I could have lifted more if my hands had not failed me. Plus sometimes my hands get sweaty.

So, they do work, and I even have better grip strength despite using them. I don't use them every workout, because it dawned on me I didn't really need them when I wasn't lifting heavy.
