Just poured out an expired bottle of pedialyte. I'm getting tired of pouring this stuff out, especially since it's not natural. I'm wondering if kids even need this stuff. If so, is there a way I can make my own as-needed? Thanks!
Homemade Pedialyte Recipe
4 cups water 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup squeeze childs favorite fruit (orange, lemon, grapefruit, any berries in to flavour)
Mix all until dissolved. Keep refrigerated and use within a couple of days.
I also add my vote for coconut water as the best electrolyte replenisher. I unfortunately hate the taste of coconut water so as a close second is (not-from concentrate) grapefruit juice. It is high in potassium while being low in sugar. It's still a bit sugary if that's a concern for you, but compared to other drinks or other ways to get electrolytes, it's a good choice.
Pedialyte is essentially a pharmacy grade Gatorade, that is in a ratio (sodium/potassium) etc that is safe for babies. However, adults can use it as well. in fact many college wrestlers use it after cutting weight to rehydrate.
Use the powder packs version if you find you are throwing out the premixed stuff. Many other brands usually available in the pharmacy.
I've been wondering about this too. To be honest I haven't found a recipe that I'm satisfied with for homemade pedialyte. I really like the idea of coconut water... so I was thinking of trying coconut water, sea salt, honey, freshly squeezed orange juice, freshly squeezed lemon juice and maybe some juice from some frozen berries (squeeze the juice from the thawed berries through a nut-milk bag). If it works out I'll post the recipe in case others are interested :)
Coconut water is full of electrolytes and has more potassium than gatorade. I also like a product called ENDURE which has electrolytes and minerals from salt water. http://www.traceminerals.com/products/energy-performance/endure-performance-electrolyte
