For awhile now my poop has had a metallic odor to them. They pass easily, seem well formed and I feel better then ever so Ive just been ignoring it. Does anyone know if this is an issue? I eat mostly organic beef, grass fed lamb, shellfish, fish, and vegetables with fats coming from animal or avocado (cook in coconut oil). Only real cheat is a small piece of dark chocolate a day. Supplements are quercetin (sinuses), bilberry (eyes), and vitamin C.

I just started taking quercetin and noticed a similar smell. I found your forum post while looking for a link between that smell and quercetin intake. I did not find much at all with the exception of you taking it too. A study would be nice so we can confirm this to be the cause. I do not eat a lot of garlic.

This was the cause. Thanks! – Geoff May 13 2012 at 20:21

I wouldn't worry about it. Judging from your high fat, low carbohydrate diet you are most likely in ketosis, and so the metallic smell is simply ketone bodies being excreted in your stools/urine.

It could be that you are detoxing a heavy metal, like copper.

I had this happen to me, but it turned out to be something harmless but terribly embarrassing: garlic.

Evidently I have a staunch love for garlic, and in this case, the excess of garlic powder I was adding to my food manifested as a metallic odor in my poo.

Not sure that's what causing your problem, but that's how it was for me. :)

I started having the same thing and searched the net for a cause. I am currently performing a detox protocol and have been eliminating parasites....I saw that occult blood in the bowels will cause this, like in the condition of a parasite or parasites. I also suspect that I might be detoxing heavy metals. Interestingly, garlic is one of the possible agents that you canuse to detox parasites.

I do eat a ton of garlic. I think that could be the cause. Honestly I feel like my "sh*t dont stink", it just smells a little like metal pipes :-) – Geoff May 26 2011 at 21:06

I eat a very high protein & fat diet, extremely low in carbs (about 55g a day), is it ketosis? And how do I find out more about ketosis?

Feces may smell like iron due to the presence of blood - red blood cells have iron as part of the hemoglobin. The blood can come from ulcers or colorectal problems. Either way if there is enough blood to impart an iron smell, it is indicative of a serious problem and should be investigated promptly by a medical professional.
