Look at what just occured about the ACCORD TRIAL. ACCORD showed that type two diabetics lives are cut short by 6 yrs......even showed that the treatment group had higher mortality despite 'improved' lower HgbA1c lab measurements and 'better' blood glucoses with pharmaceuticals! This is h...orrible news for docs and patients. It means that you must never become a diabetic period. Because even with the best medical treatment and best drugs out there you will still have a shortened life. Why? Your mitochondria are not working well and very leaky. The rust faster. And you die sooner!
Here is the most interesting thing however.....While the drugs uses in the ACCORD trial were epic failures for patients and docs.......We have another trial done by a UCSF nephrologist that shows her diet reversed many of the effects quickly (2 Weeks).... Guess what kind of diet it was? PALEOLITHIC!!!! Here is the link.

This is the big circle of life in my view and will get physician attn. If you change your diet you can increase your life and reverse type two diabetes. Moreover the type 1.5 diabetics who have had their beta cells fried by the leaky gut and carbohydrate loads are clear now. Paleo dieting improves mitochondrial energy production and life. But it requires you to have a doc who gets it and a patient who buys in to the paleolithic way of eating. What say you Hacks?
My husband had insanely positive changes after only 5 weeks strict Paleo when he went in for his regular 3 month diabetes check up. His blood sugar was great, his triglycerides had dropped from almost 400 to 187 and his blood pressure was 120/78 where previously it had been routinely sky high and he had been medicated. He had also dropped 15 lbs. His doctor was in tears after years of watching him struggle to control his blood sugar, lose the same 20 lbs over and over but usually gain more each time and never break his raging sugar addiction. It's many months later and he's doing great! No one has to live with type 2 diabetes but they can't keep eating the way they always did and expect to be free of it nor can they eat any sort of typical American diet.
Dr. K, I hope you're right and that there is eventually a tipping point for paleo diets. Cynical me says that there is little opportunity for Big Pharma to make money off of anything paleo, and in fact that tipping point would end up costing them billions of dollars in revenue, so the chances of seeing the medical community as a whole swing that way are slim at best. I hope I'm wrong.
THis is good news. And coupled with the news that insulin levels are linked to myopia and that ADHD can be treated through diet it seems readily apparent that a whole host of what we thought were unrelated maladies are caused not by bad breeding, but by bad diet. I cannot tell you what sort of relief that is for me.
Basically, this trial showed only that poorly-controlled, long-time diabetics did not respond well to intensive drug therapy. It has nothing to say about achieving low A1c levels by diet. Another recent study showed that for every 1% increase above an A1c of 5.4%, there is a 19% greater risk of myocardial infarction.
Ah yeah I'm familiar with this study (or at least the abstract). I have been saying this for a while - the causes of type 2 diabetes are basically eating the SAD! No doubt it can be reversed so long as they have at least some life left in them.
Reverse tissue HUFA. Low omega 6 diet. High omega 3s at least for a month. Lots of saturated fat for adiponectin Lots of protein to dejunk the liver and rebuild health Repair gut with smart proteins, coconut and grain avoidance Get enough nutrients FFS Exercise if you can Get sleep working on your side. I'm still a fiber-nut. It is seriously good stuff to get enough fiber, particular inulin.
Over on MDA we get big fat people with triglycerides at like 300 and turn them healthy in 6 months. Robb Wolf sees the same thing.
Ah but without grains how will they poop? Hrmf.
Low carb anything is actually becoming conventional wisdom for diabetes treatment now.
My insurance company even recommends a low carb diet that would be paleo if you did not specify the "no seed oils" portion.... So I would say the medical establishment is not exactly sticking there heads in the ground.
That said, in these sort of trials it is always a specifically high fat low carb sort of paleo, and Atkins usually does a comparable job. Here is an article from 2006 advocating the change in CW http://diabetes.webmd.com/news/20060616/do-low-carb-diets-help-diabetes .
